Fire Safety Exercise at the Penchala Tunnel

As a highway concessionaire that emphasises the safety, Sistem Penyuraian Trafik KL Barat Sdn Bhd (SPRINT) recently organised a fire safety exercise at the Penchala Tunnel.

The 710-meter long tunnel is the main feature of the Penchala Link, which was opened on the Feb 16, 2004. The Penchala Tunnel is the widest tunnel in Malaysia and consists of three lanes on each bound. It is equipped with the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) which incorporates closed circuit cameras (CCTV), fire extinguishers, emergency telephones, cross passages (for emergencies) and a pedestrian walkway.

The fire safety exercise on Feb 14, 2004, conducted for the first time, involved two fire engines from the Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Desa Sri Hartamas Fire and Rescue Departments. In addition, an ambulance and six members of SPRINT Highway Patrol also took part in the exercise. In connection with the ?ire? that involved three victims; the road heading west of Kuala Lumpur was closed to all vehicles until the situation was under control.

According to SPRINT Operations Manager, En Nor Azman Ishak, the fire safety exercise was organised to test the effectiveness of ITS and the readiness of SPRINT employees, especially the Highway Patrol and Traffic Controllers who monitor the CCTV 24 hours a day.

?his exercise is important to us, as we could get feedback on the Emergency Response Procedures (ERP) for the benefit of highway users,? said Nor Azman.

He added that the frequency of such exercise would depend on the need to conduct these drills and be based on feedback received from the users.

The Penchala Link connects the Damansara ? Puchong Highway at the Sungai Penchala Interchange, to the SPRINT Highway? Kerinchi Link at the Mont Kiara Interchange.

By Road IN MALAYSIA

Malaysians have a fondness for cars and a family may own two vehicles. Road transport is the most convenient mode of transport in and around West Malaysia. Most roads in West Malaysia are well paved and roads links to even small towns and villages. Malaysian roads are link to the Thai and Singapore road systems.

A well-maintained highway (toll expressway/ North-south or PLUS expressway) with two lanes runs through West Malaysia from Johor Bahru (Malaysia-Singapore border) in the south to Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah) at the Malaysian-Thai border in the north. A journey from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth (about 370 km) will take you about three and a half hours. There is a good system of trunk roads, that branches out to the coastal areas, forest parks and highlands, covering areas from Padang Besar (Thai-Malaysia border) to Johor Bahru, and running to the states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, linking you to Singapore through the causeway. (See Malaysia Road map).

Highways and Expressways in Malaysia

Plus expressways (Toll motorway) or North-south expresway:

This expressway runs from Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah) to Johor Bahru (Johor), cuting states on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsular.

** Payment mode at toll expressways: ?ouch-N-Go? cards or cash cards for the toll are available at the offices beside major toll kiosks. You have to go to their office to purchase a new card but can update at certain toll plaza. Payment through Smart Tags is another option.  Touch 'N Go: 03-7628 5115

** Emergencies: PLUS? Traffic Monitoring Centre (TMC) operates 24 hours a day to assist with inquiries - PLUSLINE 1800-88-0000. Emergency telephones are found every 2 km along the expressway. Other vehicle emergency: Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) 1800-88-0808

**** Facilities (rest areas) are provided every 25km or so. Some rest areas have food and drink outlets, restaurants, petrol stations and a small surau (prayer room for Muslims). Toilet facilities are usually clean.

East-West Highway of Peninsular Malaysia     This highway runs from Kedah (from Baling) through Perak into Kelantan and takes you to Kota Bahru. It traverse the highland areas near the Thai-Malaysia border.

Highways in East Malaysia and Borneo     East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) has fewer roads but the main highway, the Trans-Borneo Highway runs from Kuching to all major cities in Sarawak and into the state of Sabah through Brunei Darussalam. See  Sarawak.

Trunk roads - Federal or State roads    Trunk road refers to the main road linking towns in West Malaysia. This is the old main highway before the toll expressway was built. All these roads are well paved (of flexible pavements). Roads within towns and linking towns are sometimes referred as Federal or State roads. Be careful driving along these roads as they cut through towns and villages. These roads link you to ferry terminals to Penang Island, Langkawi, Pangkor, Tioman, etc. It also links forest parks, fishing villages and mountain resorts to major towns.

Speed limit on Malaysian Roads   The speed limit on the North-south Plus expressway is 110 or 90 km/hr, look out for the signboards near the toll gate. Heavy vehicles usually have to keep to 90km/hr or below along expressway. Along trunk roads (Federal/State roads) linking town, the limit is usually 60 to 90km/hr.

Drive slowly and with caution, when travelling along trunk roads between towns, there are many cyclists, people and even animals on these roads! Motorist will have to bear all responsibility for any accidents. At town centres speed limit is usually 60km/hr and below.

Driving around      You are required to have a Malaysian driver? licence or an international driver? licence. Driving licences issued by Singapore and Thailand are recognised here. Be sure to remember that the safety belt is mandatory and the use of cellular or mobile phones while driving is not permitted. (See Malaysia Road map)

Car rental     Many international and local car rental companies offer a wide choice of vehicles as well as attractive packages that include hotel accommodation. Car rental counters are located at all international airports in Malaysia or are contactable by phone.

Traffic rules     Foreigners who wish to drive in Malaysia must first understand the local traffic rules and road signs as many notices and signs are in Malay. Speed limits are enforced along the main highways and toll expressways. Speed limits on the Plus Expressway are generally 110 km per hour and 90 km per hour on certain stretches. Speed limits on trunk roads are usaually between 60 to 90kmph. The law also requires all front seat passengers to wear a safety belt.

Overhead Bridge Restaurants on PLUS expressway (Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan)

Overhead Bridge Restaurants

The Overhead Bridge Restaurants are one stop rest areas that provide a
variety of facilities for users. Straddling the Expressway, this one stop
convenient centre is the first of its kind in the country, enabling users to
enjoy the facilities offered at each bound of the highway. OBRs also give the
users a chance to enjoy their meals at one of the air-conditioned
restaurants as they observe the traffic below.

Located at two major sites: Sg. Buloh and Ayer Keroh, these OBRS namely
the Sungai Buloh OBR and the Ayer Keroh OBR are the preferred rest stop
areas for many users of the NSE. The number of travellers has increased
dramatically over the years due to the excellent facilities and variety of
restaurants and eateries provided there.

[size=-2]A view of the highway from a control tower in Pantai Dalam. New Pantai
Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE), is a step closer to providing motorists with a
smoother drive.

WHILE construction works on the Jengka and Tujuan Inter-changes in Subang Jaya are underway, the projects' concessionaire, New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE), is a step closer to providing residents in the area a smoother drive.

After all, the area has been tagged a motorist抯 nightmare for years. The Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya stretch, for instance, is known for its traffic congestion.

The additional works, which began two years ago, are expected to be completed in April.

揟he ongoing works are part of the final stage in an overall traffic im-provement scheme designed to bring about an end to congestion in Subang Jaya and USJ,

The North-South Expressway Northern Route between Gopeng and Simpang Pulai skretch.

The North-South Expressway (NSE) (Malay: Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan) (Chinese : 南北大道) (Tamil : please fill in ) is the longest expressway in Malaysia with the total length of 966 km running from Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah near the Malaysian-Thai border to Johor Bahru at southern Malaysia. The expressway links many major cities and towns in western Peninsular Malaysia, acting as the 'backbone' of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also known as PLUS Expressway, after the highway's concessionaire, Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (North South Highway Project).

It is divided into a few main routes; E1 (northern route from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Kuala Lumpur) which also incorporates the Penang Bridge, E2 (southern route from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru). The New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), part of the E1 route, starts from Bukit Raja, Klang to Jalan Duta exit in Kuala Lumpur. The North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE) (E6), opened in 1999, is a highway built to bypass Kuala Lumpur. It starts from the Shah Alam interchange on the NKVE (E1), past Subang Jaya, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and ends at the Nilai Utara interchange on the E2. The E3 is the Second Link Expressway (Linkedua), which is connected to Malaysia-Singapore Second Link, starting at Senai Airport and ends in Tanjung Kupang before crossing. PLUS also obtained the Seremban - Port Dickson Highway, E29, which starts at Mambau in Seremban with an interchange at Lukut and ending near the town centre in Port Dickson.

E1 and E2 end in Kuala Lumpur. The E1 from the North becomes the New Klang Valley Expressway which further links into the NSE Central Link or for people travelling to Kuala Lumpur exit at the Jalan Duta Toll Plaza which links to the SPRINT Expressway (E23) and the MRR I. The E2 from the South ends in Sungai Besi which then changes into the KL - Seremban Highway with interchanges to the Federal Highway Route 2, Sungai Besi Highway and heads towards the city centre.
