Speed limit

North-South Expressway is designed as a high-speed long distance expressway therefore the default speed limit on the North-South Expressway is 110 km/h, but there are some exceptions in some places for several reasons, including:-

Kuala Kangsar-Jelapang stretch: 80 km/h (highland stretch with dangerous corners)
Gua Tempurung stretch: 90 km/h (highland stretch)
Bukit Lanjan exit: 80 km/h (to control traffic flow of NKVE and the main link of northern route to avoid accidents)
Sungai Besi to Bangi: 90 km/h (due to high traffic capacity)
Alor Gajah-Ayer Keroh: 90km/h (due to strong crosswind)

New Klang Valley Expressway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Klang Valley Expressway, or the NKVE (the official name as stated on the website of PLUS Expressways Berhad, the highway concessionaire) refers to a stretch of the North-South Expressway in Peninsular Malaysia which starts from Bukit Raja near Klang town, and ends at Jalan Duta in Kuala Lumpur. People sometimes call it the North Klang Valley Expressway due to its location in Malaysia's most populated region, but most refer to it by its initials.

Traffic from the north, destined for places further south of Kuala Lumpur (such as Putrajaya, Seremban, Melaka and Singapore), must enter the Bukit Lanjan interchange and travel west before turning left at Shah Alam (the entry point of North-South Expressway Central Link, E6). Another alternative is by entering Kuala Lumpur via Jalan Duta Interchange and entering Jalan Duta and KL Middle Ring Road 1 which ends at Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway and the southern route but this alternative is quite unwise especially during peak hours, therefore the NKVE is built to bypass Kuala Lumpur for traveling north-south or vice-versa.

The Setia Alam Interchange on EXIT 102 was now opened to traffic on 14 June 2006.

Penang Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Penang Bridge (Jambatan Pulau Pinang in Malay) is a dual-carriageway toll bridge that connects Gelugor on the island of Penang and Seberang Prai on the mainland of Malaysia on the Malay Peninsula. The bridge is also linked to the North-South Expressway in Prai and Jelutong Expressway in Penang. It was officially opened to traffic on September 14, 1985. The total length of the bridge is 13.5 km, making it among the longest bridges in the world as well as a national landmark. Plus Expressway Berhad is the concession holder who manages it.

Before 1985, transportation between the island and the mainland was solely dependent on the state-owned ferry services that runs between Butterworth and George Town.

Similar to the ferry services in Penang, motorists only need to pay the toll fare while heading to the island. There is no charge for leaving the island.

Currently, the Penang Bridge is being expanded from 4 lanes to 6 lanes to accommodate the increasing traffic on the bridge. A proposal for a second bridge, the Penang Second Bridge, has been approved by the government and included as one of the Ninth Malaysian Plan national projects.

Touch 'n Go

The Touch 'n Go smart card is used by Malaysian toll expressway and highway operators as the sole electronic payment system (EPS). The credit card sized smartcard made of plastic with Philips MIFARE microchip technology embedded in it. The Touch 'n Go systems are designed to process up to 800 vehicles per hour to ease the queue congestion at toll plazas.

It was developed by Teras Teknologi Sdn Bhd and owned by Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd. An extension of Touch 'n Go is SmartTAG, which allows users to insert the card into a reader for fully automatic/non-stop payment at toll plazas.

The first Touch 'n Go system was installed and use at Jalan Pahang Toll Plaza on 18 March 1997. It was then immediately extended to Jalan Cheras toll plaza and the East West Link toll plaza on 15 April 1997.

Touch 'N Go toll payment system fully implemented throughout the 848km North-South Expressway on 15 November 1998. This was made possible when the service was extended to the northern sections of the highway from Jelapang to Jitra.

As such the smart card can be used to pay toll from Kempas in Johor right up to Jitra in Kedah, making it one of the world's longest single stretch of expressway electronic toll payment systems.

The official launch was done at the Sungai Dua toll plaza and officiated by Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd then chairman, Datuk Dr Ramli Mohamad.

Touch 'n Go is not only for toll highways but also parking services, theme parks, busses (TransNasional and Triton services), electric train (KTM Komuter), Rapid KL light rail transit (STAR (now Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line) and PUTRA LRT (now Kelana Jaya Line) ) and monorail (KL Monorail) services. The service has also been integrated into MyKad.

To date, there are about 3 million users of Touch 'n Go card in Malaysia (excluding those incorporated in MyKad), out of which 1.5 million are considered 'active users'.

The Touch 'n Go card may be loaded and or reloaded with cash values of RM20, RM50, RM100, RM200 and RM500.

It can be reloaded manually or automatically, at the Touch 'N Go sales and customer service counter located at major toll plazas, Automated Teller Machines (ATM) of Bumiputra-Commerce Berhad (BCB), Maybank and Ambank, selected Petronas Petrol Station and at Touch 'n Go Sales & Reload Agents, consisting of restaurants, phone shops, convenient stores and bookstores with a processing fees of 50 sen.

It can also be done automatically as a card holder would be able to link the card to their selected credit cards, issued by participating banks in Malaysia. Each time the card balance falls below RM50, it will trigger the autoreload mechanism to top up RM100 into the Card. The amount will be charged to the credit card.

Touch 'n Go autoreload facility is currently offered by:

Hong Leong Bank
Affin Bank
EON Bank
RHB Bank
Maybank
Bumiputra-Commerce Bank
The largest usages of Touch 'n Go are recorded at highway networks owned by PLUS Expressways Berhad (PEB) that primarily cover Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan (PLUS)/North-South Expressway (NSE), Malaysia-Singapore Second Link (MSSC/LINKEDUA), and North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE) - a highway connecting Kuala Lumpur with Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Federal Highway

Federal Highway, or Lebuhraya Persekutuan in Malay is a Malaysian highway connecting the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, and Klang, Selangor. The highway starts from Seputeh in Kuala Lumpur to Taman Berkeley in Klang. The Federal Highway is coded as Federal Route 2.

History

The history of the highway started after the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, when the Malaysian government decided to make Port Swettenham (now Port Klang) as Malaysia's new national port as a replacement of Singapore. As a result, the government planned to build a highway connecting Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur. The highway originally started from Jalan Syed Putra / Jalan Klang Lama interchange to Klang but was extended to Jalan Sungai Besi interchange and finally to Cheras Highway. The highway was originally a 4-lane limited access highway except for the Petaling Jaya stretch where it became 6-lane highway. However, in 1992 Plus Expressway Berhad, the concession holder of North-South Expressway has upgraded the entire highway to a 6-lane highway. The highway handles incredible volumes of traffic and one should expect a significant jam at more or less any time of day.

[edit] Benefits of Highway
The highway serves as the main highway of Klang Valley conurbation since it connects major cities of the conurbation including Klang, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. However, the increase of traffic as a result of the population increase peaked the capacity of the highway in the mid-1990s and therefore massive daily traffic jams along Federal Highway are common especially early in the morning and late afternoon. As a result, the government began to build new expressways to reduce the congestion of Federal Highway, which were viewed as an unwise choice since those new expressways were unable to reduce the traffic rate on Federal Highway. Instead, these newer highways are just burdening the residents of Klang Valley with their toll rates.

[edit] Current developments
The upgraded of the Subang Airport Interchange including main link of Subang-Kelana Jaya Link from Subang Airport Highway (route 15) of Federal Highway (route 2) to Persiaran Kewajipan near Menara Mesiniaga had began on the end of 2005 and the construction of the new Majlis Link on September 2005. Both project are led by Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR). While the main contractor are the Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad (AZRB) and Ho Hup Construction Company Berhad (HHCC).

[edit] Features
The main feature of Federal Highway is Kota Darul Ehsan, the biggest arch in Malaysia located in Petaling Jaya. It was built on the orders of the former Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah to commemorate the cession of Kuala Lumpur to the federal government. Another main feature is Tugu Keris (Kris Monument) located near Sungai Rasau toll plaza in Klang.

Federal Highway also has a motorcycle lane to avoid accidents between cars and motorcycles in that area.

Bulatan Darul Ehsan aka Shah Alam Cloverleaf Interchange in Shah Alam, Selangor is the biggest cloverleaf interchange in Malaysia.

All About Malaysia's North-South Expressway

All About Malaysia's North-South Expressway

The North-South Expressway (NSE)

Distances

With the North South Expressway (NSE), motorists have a well-paved till route to the border of Thailand--without narrow, winding, congested and potholed roads. The following are approximate distances & suggested RIDING times in good conditions by experienced drivers from the Singapore border. Travel times do not include breaks, time spent at border crossings etc:Timing var from speed.

Malaysia
Destination Ave. Time Distance (approx. km)
Malacca Two ? Hours 225
Kuala Lumpur Three ? Hours 370
Ipoh Six Hours 575
Butterworth Seven ? Hours 740
Thai Border Nine Hours 840

Tourist Police
Lost your way? Need help? Look for a tourist police officer. Tourist police officers are recognized by their checkered hat bands, dark blue shirts and trousers, and the letter "I" (for information) on a red and blue badge on their breast pocket.

Riding on NSE

Rest Areas

There are 18 rest and service areas (RSAs), located every 50 to 100 kms, with facilities like food stalls, toilets, parking and telephones. Some even have souvenir shops and produce markets. There are plans to build motels at the RSAs along the scenic northern track.

Emergencies

If your bike should breakdown seriouslly , do not panic. There are emergency phones located every 2 km. Because there have been instances of motorists on the old trunk road being taken for an expensive ride by freelance mechanics, the highway company (PLUS) runs a 24-hour emergency service. Only they are allowed to do repairs on the highway. (maybe not for Big CC bikes as malaysia has few of this) These mechanics in yellow PLUS vehicles do free minor repairs, recharge batteries, and can tow to the nearest RSA if major repairs are needed. Off the freeway the Automobile Association of Singapore (see Links) has reciprocal arrangements with its Malaysian cousin.

Exits
Exits to the main towns are generally on the left, watch out for signs placed 1 km and 500 m prior to the turn-off.
Safety on the Freeway
Watch out for stray buffaloes & chickens that spill over onto the expressway. Don't stop at the fruit stalls with big umbrellas, however tempting the durians are - it is a traffic offence to stop along the expressway shoulders.
Slow down as you approach slow moving traffic. Drivers rarely use their indicators when they change lanes, and cars do wander. Buses and trucks will also sometimes pull abruptly into the outer lane particularly when overtaking each other. It is easy to underestimate the difference in speed between you and these prehistoric leviathans

Speeding is a popular recreation on the NSE for both repressed Singaporean motorists and Malaysian drivers with big engined or exotic machineryso look for flashing lights and indicators. Make sure you indicate also ? better to forget about kiasu and start thinking about getting to your destination in one piece.
Watch out for rainstorms, which can be sudden and heavy, both visibility and traction can be severely impaired.

Road Rage

Relax-lah! Would you believe road rage is alive and well on the Freeway? Not at the level of Los Angeles or the UK but nevertheless present. The worst incidences I have seen are where a speeding driver meets a self-righteous motorist ? pulling into or staying in the overtaking lane at exactly the speed limit as faster cars approach is dangerous and foolish. The speed differences can be great. Other drivers are then put at risk as the two opponents joust and typically no one really comes off a winner. In some countries the righteous driver would be booked for dangerous driving.

Your speed should reflect the road conditions (which includes other motorists) and you should keep left unless overtaking.

NSE Construction

Fully operational in February 1994, the North-South Expressway was completed fifteen months ahead of schedule. This in itself proved to be a noteworthy achievement, earning PLUS the honour of being awarded the Prime Minister's Quality Award 1995. During construction in the years between 1988 and 1994, the Malaysian engineering community and construction industry were faced with many challenges, not least of which was the need to manage the implementation of the multi-billion ringgit project.

Traversing through terrain ranging from soft alluviums in the paddy fields of the northern state of Kedah to the rolling hills and mountains bordering the Main Range in the central region of the peninsula, the North-South Expressway formed a landmark undertaking by local consultants and contractors alike. Assisted by internationally recognised foreign counterparts, Malaysian consultants rose to the occasion, producing innovative designs such as the concrete viaducts used to carry the expressway over peat swamps in the southern region between Yong Peng and Skudai.

The NSE is designed to provide a four-lane dual carriageway with provision for the construction of an additional two lanes in future. In urban areas, the number of lanes is increased to six. Lane widths vary from 3.65 metres to 3.75 metres. The width of the shoulder is 3 metres. The North-South Expressway is designed to accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/h, providing a margin of safety over the maximum speed limit of 110 km/h.The North-South Expressway consists of 674.15 km of asphaltic flexible pavement and 173.55 km of concrete rigid pavement.

* NSE Undergoing Upgrading Works

As previously announced, several parts of the North-South Expressway (NSE) will be converted into a 3-lane dual carriageway to facilitate better level of service and enhance customer safety and convenience.
Among the stretches included in this project are:-

1) Third Lane Widening between Seremban - Senawang
Description : The third lane widening project between Seremban and Senawang is the continuation from the existing dual 3-lane carriageway between Kuala Lumpur and Seremban. The widening works comprises asymmetrical and symmetrical widening of the existing dual 2-lane carriageway. Shoulder widening works are carried out between Seremban and PD interchanges while median widening works are adopted between PD and Senawang stretch.
Length : 7.4 kilometres
Expected Completion Date : 1 July 2007
Status (as at 20 September 2005) : Overall progress 4% and on scheduled. Median widening between KM 255 ? KM 257 and shoulder widening between KM 259.9-KM260.7 NB are in progress.

2) Third Lane Widening between Senawang ? Ayer Keroh
Description : The project is a continuation of the Seremban ? Senawang upgrading package and is extending until approximately 1 km beyond the Ayer Keroh Interchange. Median widening works are adopted as the existing median width is sufficient to accommodate the third lane for both bounds.
Length : 62 kilometres
Expected Completion Date : 8 August 2007
Status (As at 20 Sept) : Median widening works at KM234, KM243, KM215 and KM198

3) Third Lane Widening between Rawang ? Tanjung Malim
Description : The widening scheme adopted for this stretch is shoulder widening. The mainline will be widened to a 3-lane carriageway while the interchange ramps and acceleration and deceleration lane of the rest and service areas will be modified.
Length : 45 kilometres
Expected Completion Date : 8 August 2007
Status (As at 20 Sept) : Shoulder widening works at KM438 (southbound) and KM418 (southbound)

4) Third Lane Widening between Tanjung Malim ? Slim River
Description : The widening scheme adopted and the scope of works are the same as the widening stretch between Rawang and Tanjung Malim.
Length : 28 kilometres
Expected Completion Date : 8 August 2007
Status (As at 20 Sept) : Shoulder widening works at KM399 (northbound)

5) Modification for Non-Stop Through Traffic between Jelapang and Ipoh Selatan Toll Plazas
Description : PLUS will modify the NSE between the Jelapang and Ipoh Selatan Toll Plazas through relocating both toll plazas off the mainline and separation of the local traffic from the mainline traffic. The objective is primarily to address accident issues at the Jelapang Toll Plaza, to allow through traffic flow for mainline traffic and toimprove the level of service along the mainline. A new 2-lane designated local road that runs parallel to the expressway mainline will be constructed. An Emergency Run-Off Area will also be constructed at the southbound mainline just before the existing Jelapang Toll Plaza.
Expected Completion Date : 10 October 2007
