Big plans for Kenyir Lake

By EDWARD SUBENG STEPHEN

Steps going up to the entrance of Gua Mewah.

KETENGAH, the Central Terengganu Development Authority, has a big dream for Kenyir Lake.

It wants to turn the lake into one of the best eco-tourism and adventure tourism destinations in the region and the world.

Kenyir Lake in Hulu Terengganu, South-East Asia? biggest man-made lake, was created in 1983 with the construction of the RM740mil Sultan Mahmud hydro-electric dam.

It spans an area of 260,000ha of tropical forest of which 38,000ha was inundated.

This resulted in the creation of some 340 artificial islands (which were once hilltops and highlands) and numerous waterfalls, rapids and rivers.

A Tourism Malaysia promotion brochure describes Kenyir as ? paradise where nature is at its very best? and as ?he best place for an adventure holiday?.

There is no doubt that Kenyir Lake lives up to such billings.

Ketengah assistant director A. Ghani Omar said the lake? initial infrastructure facilities and amenities are already in place.

?t is our aim to create more facilities besides improving on existing ones and developing new products,? he told a group of journalists from Sabah and Sarawak visiting the lake recently, courtesy of Tourism Malaysia.

There are 12 resorts of various standards with a total of 428 rooms spread out all over the area but the occupancy rate remains much to be desired. It averages between 10% to 20 % during ordinary days.

Cruising on Tasik Kenyir on board a houseboat.

Ghani said from January to July last year, 31,287 people visited Kenyir.

The best arrival record was in 1999 with 114,000 people.

He said that strategies had been identified to attract more tourists.

?ne strategy is to indulge in more aggressive promotions, both domestically and internationally. There is also a proposal to create a tax-free zone in one of the islands, Pulau Poh.?

?he Government has agreed in principle to this proposal which we hope can boost arrivals and repeat visits,? he said.

A plan to construct a medium-scale amusement theme park costing about RM10mil is on the drawing board.

Ghani said the country? premier theme park and holiday spots developer, Country Heights Group, was negotiating with the state to acquire 202ha for a luxury resort project.

A houseboat at the main dam.

On its own, Kenyir certainly has much to offer.

It has 14 spectacular waterfalls and numerous rapids.

The must visit ones are Lasir, Saok, Tembat and Petang.

Picnics and overnight camping packages are available from any of the resorts or chalets.

Ghani says the Tourism Ministry had allocated RM2mil to improve facilities at Lasir.

?his includes a RM200,000 tower which is already completed and a 500m suspension bridge over the waterfall,? he said.

Kenyir is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora, abundant species of freshwater fish and exotic wildlife.

A recent study showed that there are some 300 species of freshwater fish in the lake.

A promotion brochure claimed that ?uring the wet season, when rain falls almost daily, fish can be caught with bare hands.?

Fish in the lake include the highly prized ornamental Green Arowana (Kelisa), Malaysian Mahseer (Kelah), Friendly Barb (Kawan), Giant Gouramy (Kalui), Barboides (Lampan Sungai) and Snakehead (Toman).

Ghani said, as a conservation measure, Ketengah has disallowed local fishermen from using seine nets in the lake area. They are only allowed hook and line.

Those wishing to buy fresh fish for dinner can visit a nearby fish breeding station. Species such as Talipia, Lampan Jawa, Patin, Baong and Keli are bred there.

Boats, including those with air-conditioned cabins and Astro TV service, are available for hire to take anglers to the best fishing spots.

However, permits must be obtained from the Wildlife and National Parks Department and experienced guides have to be engaged.

Other activities such as jungle trekking and camping, obstacle courses, wildlife observation and mountaineering are also available.

Kenyir is also a water sports arena.

It has the annual Kenyir Regatta while jetskiing, kayakking, canoeing, rafting and shooting rapids are popular activities.

Those who love caving can explore the limestone hill caves at Bewah and Taat hills. Both places contain evidence of an ancient neolithic civilisation.

Another place worth visiting is the 16ha herbal garden established in 1995 at Pulau Sah Kecil.

Swimming at Lasir waterfall.

The island, according to Ghani, serves three purposes ? research, education and tourism.

Some 23,933 plants consisting of 106 species are cultivated in the garden.

These species are used in traditional medicinal preparations, aromatherapy and herbal treatment.

Kenyir is beginning to benefit from some of the most unexpected developments in the more established Asean tourism centres.

Phobia over the Dec 2004 killer tsunami and, to a certain extent, the threat of terrorism are changing the trend in Asean travel.

?ourists now prefer to go away from beaches. We have begun to experience an increase in arrivals. We hope to exploit the changing trends with Kenyir? charms to pack them in,? said Ghani. ? Bernama

The goods available here range from batik sarungs to toys, nasi lemak to burgers... you name it, and you may just find it. Some sellers just display their goods right on the beach!

Also available are Terengganu home-grown products such as bronze wares, replicas of keris and turtles, key chains and ash-trays made from coconut shells.

It? not only shoppers who throng the market; leisure seekers come too. Those who picnic on the beach would bring along packed lunches from home or bought at nearby restaurants which offer various kinds of foods, all reasonably priced.

Tarian saba imej Dungun

Road less travelled in Terengganu
PUTRI ZANINA

Take a leisurely drive to Terengganu and discover fireflies, delightful food and friendly people, besides the usual beaches and fishing boats, writes PUTRI ZANINA
IT is the beginning of the monsoon season and islands in Terengganu are off limits to tourists. However, that is not to say that you can抰 go for a holiday to this east coast state during this time of the year for there are still pockets of fine sunny days for you to enjoy a trip there.

In fact, friends in Terengganu say that the weather can be quite unpredictable as there is still plenty of sunshine during the monsoon. However, stay clear of the seawater as the huge waves and strong winds can be daunting.

Now, what can you do in Terengganu if you can抰 go to any of its idyllic islands? How about driving there at leisure? You can expect traffic to be lighter as many holidaymakers will be heading elsewhere in the country.

You will be among the few adventurous ones to seek secluded spots and enjoy empty sparkling white beaches all to yourself. Whenever you come across something interesting, you can stop, check it out and take all the time you want to savour the experience.

There抯 something about driving along the beautiful coastal road in Terengganu. As you drive along palm-fringed beaches and villages, you will feel the knots in your muscles slowly untangle.

The state has one of the longest stretches of beaches in Peninsular Malaysia, running some 225km from Kemaman to Besut.

Where Do You Begin?

Take the East-Coast Expressway from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan in Pahang. The improved expressway makes the journey a breeze. You will reach Kuantan in just about three hours. If you start in the morning, you will arrive in Kuantan in time for a lunch break.

From Kuantan, drive up north through the main trunk road passing Beserah, a village with a fairly straight beach dotted with resorts, chalets, stalls and restaurants.

Some 8km away, the road will take you across a scenic river where you will see colourful boats docked by the riverside. Make a U-turn after the bridge (be careful of traffic as the road there is narrow) and enter a side road near the river.

This is Sungai Ular, the take-off point to the small Pulau Ular. From the mouth of Sungai Ular, the river snakes its way to the South China Sea.

You will see shacks by the river where fishermen rest or mend their fishing nets and traps.

Tall coconut trees line the Pantai Ular beach. Take all the time you want to enjoy the deserted beach.

Coffee Break In Chukai

Drive up north towards Kuala Terengganu. Some 25km from Sungai Ular, you will reach Chukai. Now, anyone who bothers to 揼oogle

Kemasik, Kertih And Paka

The next place from Kijal is Kemasik, which takes its name from a river there. It is a small typical fishing village but it has a gem that many have yet to discover. Its tranquil beach is among the best in Terengganu. There are some unique rock formations there.

When you cross into Kertih, you hit 搊il country

oh ya..starting bulan lepas, stesen bas tanjung dah dipindahkan ke stesen bas MPKT kat town centre. reasons dia, stesen bas tanjung tu dah ditukarkan menjadi tmpt bazaar/street stall yang dipindahkan dari taman shahbandar yang sekarang dah dibangunkan menjadi dataran shahbandar yang lebih luas. so, la ni, kalau nak gi KL, naik kat stesen bas kat town...tiket bas KT ke KL byk...tp better beli at least 2,3 hari before bertolak cos KT-KL bas tak sebanyak KL-Ipoh atau KL-Melaka yang boleh dibeli on the spot je....
