Groom-to-be drowns when car plunges into Sungai Sarawak

KUCHING: A soon-to-be-married man drowned when his car plunged into Sungai Sarawak from a jetty beneath the
Satok Bridge on Wednesday night.

The deceased, identified as 33-year-old Zulramond Roslan of Kampung Kudei, was found dead by scuba divers from the Fire Department inside his submerged Perodua Viva after the incident occurred around 10.30pm.

An eyewitness, Mohd Khairul, told reporters he was fishing atop the bridge with a friend when he saw the black Viva swirling beneath him moments before it plunged off the jetty into the river.

“I was shocked by what I saw and alerted my friend before calling the Bomba and the police,” said the 25-year-old, adding that the Viva briefly re-emerged before vanishing under water completely.

Twenty Bomba personnel, including a team of scuba divers, arrived at the scene minutes after a distress call was received at 10.32pm and were soon followed by the police and the Civil Defence Department.

Frogmen proceeded to scour the river and managed to locate the submerged car around 12.30am yesterday, some 20 metres away from the jetty and seven feet underwater, and took a further five minutes to extricate Zulramond’s body.

The sight of the lifeless body proved too much for his family members, who gathered at the scene along with a large crowd of onlookers, with his mother being driven back home after she fainted and collapsed on the ground.

The victim’s 23-year-old step-brother, who gave his name as Dino, said he was among the last to see Zulramond alive at a friend’s house in Kampung Kudei.

“I was hanging out with Zul and another brother at a friend’s house when he got into his car and began talking on his mobile phone for several minutes.

“I don’t know who he was talking to, but shortly after hanging up he told us he had to go and drove off. That was the last time I saw him before learning what had happened,” said Dino, adding he had sensed the phone call had caused his brother some distress.

According to him, Zulramond – the third of seven siblings and step-siblings – worked as a debt collector for a company in Samarahan and was due to marry his fiancé early next month.

Peculiarly however, Dino claimed that neither he nor the rest of the family knew the identity of the fiancé.

The victim’s body was sent to the Sarawak General Hospital and was released to his family at noon yesterday for burial.
