A little more background. Ivory’s plan to film Richard II has been ‘in development’ for a few years now. The script is, I believe, by Chris Terrio – the screenwriter of Argo (2012) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (in production). And (as one commenter says) Ivory has indeed been saying for some time that he wants to film Richard II (which is a favourite play for him) in 3D.
If that (and, indeed, the whole film) comes to pass, it will be a marked departure not just from Ben Whishaw’s Richard II in The Hollow Crown, but from the established Merchant Ivory filmmaking style. I’m guessing that Ivory’s idea is to take the nuanced, high-quality acting and careful attention to period/historical detail for which Merchant Ivory are famous and fuse this somehow with the capabilities of 3D technologies to create something that – if it comes off – might be genuinely new…
It’s known that Ivory was casting for Richard II last year, but I’d also heard that finance might remain a sticking point. If this new interview means the film is now funded, that’s great news. But it’s interesting to see Ivory talking about making Richard II digitally (‘I have no nostalgia for film’) rather than saying ‘3D’: has that changed? We’ll have to see.
Much as I like Tom Hiddleston, I’m disappointed to see Merchant Ivory – renowned over the decades for discovering so many wonderful, unknown, new talents and making stars – now going for the most ‘obvious’ (already huge, already hot) casting. An Australian interview with Ivory’s Executive Producer Paul Bradley last year bears this out:
““Luckily at the moment we have a fantastic new glut of young talented British actors, who are not only hugely skilled and popular but very bankable … People like Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston and many more.” Cumberbatch found fame as Sherlock Holmes and in Star Trek: Into Darkness, while Hiddleston’s role as Loki in the Thor movies has made him an internet darling. Greeted with [the interviewer’s] response that those particular actors were known as intelligent but also “thinking women’s crumpet”, Bradley responded with enthusiasm. “That is music to my ears, so we’re on the right track!”’
I guess that to secure the $millions needed to film in 3D, you need to cast Loki – but I still felt sad if Ivory isn’t casting more imaginatively. I’m also a little worried at the prospect of an 86-year-old director hanging around waiting for Hiddles to become available once he’s completed X other commitments first!

agaknya bg hollywood, abam tom adalah pilihan paling sesuwai dan selamat utk watak klasik dan shakespeare. bg watak ala2 the expendables atau 2 fast 2 furious mcm tak kena pulak
