9 best moments from Benedict Cumberbatch's Comic-Con debut
By Emma Dibdin
And the man himself did not disappoint, showing up on dapper, witty and insightful form. Below, Digital Spy rounds up the best moments from Cumberbatch's Comic-Con debut.
1) "You exist?" were his first words to the shrieking crowd of fans as he arrived onstage, who were making their existence very demonstrably known.
2) On his method approach to the role of debonair wolf Classified: "I worked in Yellowstone Park as a wolf for a while. It got a bit hairy - no pun intended - when I became the alpha male, and I realised quickly that two of the other wolves were Christian Bale and Daniel Day Lewis."
3) "I'm gonna try not to cry," one fan admitted during the audience Q&A, noticeably wobbling as she stood at the microphone. "Me too," interjected host Craig Ferguson. "We'll all try together," Cumberbatch replied kindly.
4) "I enjoy using my body," Cumberbatch said, when Ferguson asked whether he had enjoyed the animation experience. He may have said more things afterwards, but we weren't able to hear over the screaming and ovulating.
5) In the press room, Cumberbatch took some time to pose with a giant penguin. Because of course.
6) Cumberbatch and co-star John Mallkovich had only met the day before the panel, thanks to the peculiarities of voice acting, and were clearly enjoying one another's company. Cumberbatch's first question to Malkovich: "So… what was it like to play an evil octopus?"
7) Cumberbatch at one point took pity on a fan whose question had been shot down by Ferguson. "Do you want to ask another question? Ask what my shoe size is."
8) While it may seem weird that Cumberbatch didn't show up to promote Sherlock at last year's Comic-Con, but is here this year for a DreamWorks animation, he assured us all that he'd love to return to San Diego with his figurative deerstalker on in the future. "It's timing," he explained, a phrase which won't be unfamiliar to Sherlock fans.
9) Asked which superhero he'd most like to play, Cumberbatch suggested "Nurse Normal" (a sly reference to the widespread rumours that he'd been cast in Marvel's Doctor Strange), before admitting that his real choice would be Batman. Watch your back, Affleck. |
