Thousands at New Year countdown parties across Singapore
By Asha Popatlal/Margaret Perry, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 31 December 2007 2310 hrs
SINGAPORE: Thousands of people gathered at various countdown parties across Singapore to say goodbye to 2007 and hello to 2008.
One of the biggest crowds was at Marina Bay where more than 160,000 revellers had gathered.
At the stroke of midnight, an eight-minute fireworks display entertained the crowds.
The crowds were also kept enthralled by a host of performances by three local bands.
Over at VivoCity, revellers were entertained by MediaCorp artistes and "Live the Dream" stars.
With just 1,500 tickets available for the amphitheatre seats and mosh pit, fans had queued for hours to get a piece of the action.
The queue started as early as 3pm, five hours before the countdown concert begin.
With so many stars performing, fans had their own favourites.
"Taufik (Batisah), and they have Ravalina, and By Definition, Fandi and lots more, that's why we are here," said a group of revellers.
"....(I came) to support Alvin Ng," said another reveller.
"We've come for Julian Gomez, Hady Mirza and Taufik Batisah," said a third group of revellers.
The countdown party at VivoCity was flanked by events on both sides.
To the south at Sentosa, there was the Siloso Beach Party and just above, The Jewel Box at Mount Faber. - CNA/ir/de

SKANDAL SEKS
MENTERI M'SIA LETAK JAWATAN
-- Bernama, AP, Reuters. |

S$30m Keppel Bay Bridge opens to much fanfare
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 03 January 2008 2139 hrs
SINGAPORE: A new S$30 million bridge to link Marina Bay and Keppel Island has been officially opened by President SR Nathan.
The Keppel Bay Bridge forms part of the new waterfront living experience in the Marina Bay area.
The 250-metre bridge links Keppel Island with the mainland. But it's more than just a bridge. The new link is adorned with special lights which can be programmed to enhance the atmosphere.
It took two years to complete the bridge, which is part of the master plan to transform Keppel Bay into a premier waterfront precinct.
Teo Soon Hoe, Senior Executive Director of Keppel Corporation, said: "We wanted to build a bridge between the mainland and the island. The island is now linked with a marina clubhouse. The boats are already in. It's just been completed and will be open soon. And we have the whole island which will provide more space to our tenants."
The bridge will come in handy when more water sports events are held here. And come January 19, the 10-team Clipper fleet presently racing from Australia to Singapore will be arriving at Marina Bay, and this bridge will be a central figure for the welcome party.
Apart from scenic views of Sentosa Island as well as the upcoming integrated resort, pedestrians can also get insights into the historical surroundings from the plaques placed along the walkway. - CNA/vm |

Baby boy found abandoned outside Sikh temple at Niven Rd
By Lynda Hong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 04 January 2008 2049 hrs
SINGAPORE : A baby boy was found abandoned at a Sikh temple along Niven Road, in the Selegie area, early Friday morning.
This is the first baby abandoned this year, after three such cases last year.
It was 5am, and temple volunteer Jaswinder Singh was on his daily routine to open the temple. He was surprised by the find outside the gate.
He said, "This little baby was... outside the temple... He's a very cute and likeable child. I saw his movements..."
The baby, believed to be a Sikh, weighed 3.2 kilogrammes. He was placed in a basket wrapped in a cream-coloured cloth.
A check with the temple's CCTV showed a tall, skinny man outside the temple just before the baby was found. Police are reviewing the footage for further investigations.
The temple was built some 30 years ago, and this is the first time a baby has been abandoned there.
Jagjit Singh, President, Khalsa Dharmak Sabha, said: "We are really trying to appeal to the parents, the father, the mother, or anybody who knows of the couple... (to) come and see us. Or anybody who can come and see us on their behalf and we will do all the things possible to help."
The baby was sent to the KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where he was reported to be in good health.
The Police said the baby is about 2 to 3 months old and there are no visible injuries on him. They said the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry has been informed and it will be looking into the welfare of the baby.
The Police are also calling for anyone with information to ring their hotline at 1800-255-0000. - |

Two bodies found in Lorong Ah Soo flat
By Satish Cheney/Gamar Abdul Aziz, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 04 January 2008 2013 hrs
SINGAPORE : Two decomposed bodies were found in a flat at Block 128, Lorong Ah Soo, on Friday evening.
Police have confirmed that the dead are a 50-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man.
Channel NewsAsia understands that when authorities arrived, they found another occupant, an 80-year-old woman, alive in the unit.
She has since been sent to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, but her condition is not known.
It is a tragedy with many unanswered questions.
The Police are investigating into what happened in the fourth floor unit at Block 128, Lorong Ah Soo.
Channel NewsAsia understands that a family of three - an elderly woman, her husband and their middle-aged daughter - had been living in the flat.
The chairperson of the area's Residents' Committee, Liew Soo Wah, said she had received calls about a stench coming from the flat. Suspecting something was amiss, she called the police.
While waiting for them to arrive, she went ahead to the flat to check on the family.
Liew, Chairperson, Paya Lebar Zone 7 Residents' Committee, said: "We saw flies... I asked (the woman) 'Where is your husband?' She said sleeping. 'Where is your daughter?' She said sleeping."
According to neighbours that Channel NewsAsia spoke to, the family was very reserved and the daughter was the only one who would go to the nearby coffeeshop to buy food for the family. However, they had not seen her for more than one-and-a-half months.
Helen Goo, a neighbour, said: "They've not been out of the house, so we thought something was wrong. But the neighbour said the son had (taken) them away, maybe. So we thought we shouldn't knock (on) the door because they're very reserved people. They don't open the door at all." - CNA/ms

Singapore's Tiger Airways Offers 15,000 Free Seats On KL Route
SINGAPORE, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- One of Singapore's low fare airlines, Tiger Airways, is offering over 15,000 free seats to customers to mark its sales launch today for its latest route, Singapore-Kuala Lumpur.
The airline, which will operate daily flights from Feb 1, said the free seats are available for booking online at www.tigerairways.com from now until Friday, and are for travel until Oct 25. The fare excludes taxes and fees.
The regular fare for one-way ticket is $134.99 excluding taxes and fees.
Tiger Airways CEO Tony Davis described the new route as "a significant milestone in Asean's aviation history."
Last month, the Singapore government awarded Tiger Airways and another low-cost carrier, Jetstar Asia, the rights to each operate a daily service on the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route from Feb. 1.
Davis said Tiger Airways since its launch in 2004 had lobbied to offer low fare flights between Singapore and its neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia.
This is an important first step in the liberalisation of air travel across Asean, he said at the launch of the service here.
He said affordable and convenient travel between the two cities will lead to the development of trade and tourism which are important stimulators of economic growth.
Tiger Airways is keen to operate services to other cities in Malaysia and will continue to lobby for air traffic rights, added Davis.
Tiger Airways will operate from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Its 55-min Singapore-Kuala Lumpur daily flight will depart Changi Airport for KLIA LCCT at 10.50am and return from KLIA LCCT at 12.15pm from Feb 1 to March 29.
From March 30 to Oct 25, the flight schedule is retimed to 3.15pm from Changi Airport and 4.40pm from KLIA LCCT.
Tiger Airways now flies to eight countries across Asia-Pacific.
Tiger Aviation recently concluded an order with Airbus Industries for a further 50 aircraft to bring its fleet size to 70 aircraft by 2016.

Singapore opens new airport terminal
SINGAPORE - Singapore on Wednesday opened its largest and most expensive airport terminal that industry analysts say will reinforce the city-state's position as a regional aviation hub.
A Singapore Airlines flight from San Francisco became the first to land at Terminal 3 at about 12pm local time, a spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), which operates Changi Airport, said.
"We have received the first arrivals," the spokesperson said.
Passengers arrived to a traditional Chinese lion dance and a greeting from Singapore's Transport Minister Raymond Lim, CAAS said in a statement.
"With this new terminal, we are poised to meet the demands of the growing tourist and business traffic in and out of Singapore," Mr Lim said, particularly
when two multi-billion-dollar casino and entertainment resorts begin operation by 2010.
Built at a cost of S$1.75 billion, Terminal 3 offers 380,000 square metres of space in a seven-storey building.
It can handle 22 million passengers a year, bringing Changi's total capacity to about 70 million, CAAS said.
Terminal 3 will add 28 aerobridge gates to Changi, with up to eight designed to handle the world's biggest passenger plane, the superjumbo Airbus A380.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) in October became the world's first airline to fly the double-decker A380 and is the first to operate from Terminal 3.
With shiny granite floor tiles and carpeted lounges, Terminal 3 has the ambience of a five-star hotel. Trees and plants dot the building, which boasts a five-storey vertical garden with waterfalls.
Analysts say the new terminal will boost Changi's appeal -- particularly compared with its key challenger in Bangkok, which was plagued with problems after opening in 2006.
"It will push Singapore further ahead of its rivals," said Shukor Yusof, of Standard and Poor's Equity Research.
Terminal 3 is more than twice as large as the 140,000-square-metre second terminal which opened last June at Hong Kong International Airport.
Aviation industry competition is intensifying in a region where airline passenger growth is projected to increase faster than the global average |

PANGGILAN PALSU KE SCDF BERTAMBAH
Oleh
Khairul Bahriah Mahfud

AIRASIA TAWAR DUA PENERBANGAN KL-SINGAPURA
Oleh
Suryani Omar

NENEK BUKA KEDAI TELEFON BIMBIT
Minat ceburi niaga dan gemar barang elektronik
Oleh
Suryani Omar
