Snow surprise for emirate
DUBAI: Snow blanketed mountains in the UAE, a rare occurrence in the normally warm, desert nation, meteorologists said yesterday. Heavy snow fell on the Hajar mountains, shocking residents in Ras Al Khaimah in the north who said they had never seen snow there before.
Reports said the temperatures had dropped to as low as -5C in the emirate.
The mountains, which run from the UAE to Oman, rise to 2,500 metres in some places.
"This is certainly a rare occurrence that happens every 20 to 30 years," said Adel Saeed, forecaster at the Central Meteorology Office.
The Hajar mountain range also runs through Oman, rising as high as 3,000 metres in some areas. The tallest peak, Jabal Samhan, is covered in snow every winter but meteorologists said it was heavier this year.
A cold spell has hit the country this week, with the mercury plunging to 12C in Dubai on Wednesday night.
