SINGAPORE: Another winner has emerged from the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix - local TV ratings.

The live telecast of the race has become the highest rated programme on MediaCorp's Channel 5 this year.

About 790,000 Singapore viewers tuned in on Sunday to watch the world's first night race.

In all, figures from global market research firm TNS showed nearly two million people in Singapore caught the three-day F1 action on TV.

Nightlife industry benefited most during F1 weekend
By Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 29 September 2008 1910 hrs

St James Power Station

SINGAPORE: A whirlwind weekend of world class Formula One racing was matched by an equally heady splash of glitz and glamour in Singapore.

Nightspots in the city benefited the most from the F1 weekend, with customer numbers boosted by some 40,000 tourists in Singapore for the race. Takings were up about 40 per cent on average.

Nightspot operators had invested significant sums staging shows and flying in famous DJs and their efforts were met enthusiastically by over 70,000 party-goers all over the island on each night of the Grand Prix weekend.

For example, business had almost doubled over the weekend at Clarke Quay. While Clarke Quay usually sees about 30,000 people on a weekend night, 50,000 people thronged the area during the Grand Prix.

And those who came splashed out on drinks. St James Holdings rang up over US$700,000 worth of business in the last three days. The Indochine Group saw sales double in most of their outlets on Friday and Saturday, much of it fuelled by the appetite of high net worth individuals.

Michael Ma, IndoChine Group, said: "Our market should capture the high-end. We have good security, good infrastructure and there are not many crimes. So the rich people feel safe to be here and they enjoy it."

With an impending global economic downturn, nightspot operators feel the buzz created by the F1 will help cushion the impact of anticipated reduced consumer spending in the weeks ahead. - CNA/vm

Global road safety campaign in conjunction with F1 race in S'pore
By Greta Georges, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 29 September 2008 2129 hrs

Michelle Yeoh

SINGAPORE: The FIA, the governing body of F1, hopes to help reduce the number of accidents worldwide with the launch of a global safety campaign.

The campaign's global ambassador, Michelle Yeoh - who was in town to attend Singapore's first night race - turned up at a workshop on Monday to drive home the message of making roads safe.

The FIA hopes that with a grant of US$300 million over the next ten years, it can promote road safety education and reduce the number of people dying from road accidents.

On average, at least 3,000 people and 500 children die on the roads everyday.

Michelle Yeoh, Make Roads Safe Ambassador, said: "I think the frustration for me right now is 憌hat do you mean you don't know? Can't you see?
