Ashley Isham, Singaporean boy turned world renown fashion designer, believes that there are no short cuts to success. Hard work and more hard work is the only way. “Eat, breathe and live fashion,” advises Ashley to budding fashion designers in the School of Design, Temasek Polytechnic, whom he met on 7 December. “It is pointless for someone not to be passionate.” The world famous fashion designer still relishes the home grown comforts of wearing flip flops and scouring Singapore’s hawker centres to satiate his local palate. Firmly etched values of humility and hard work keep Ashley grounded in the heady world of celebrities. “My mother is my inspiration, and my reality check,” Ashley says.
As a boy growing up in Singapore, he was a willing apprentice to his seamstress mother, to whom he attributes his initial passion for fashion design. Ashley has come a long way from those days, rising to fame in London where his signature contemporary classics are the pursuit of celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga. “Every woman should be feminine,” professes Ashley. “When a woman is individual, empowered and at the same time chic, she is attractive.” Such a woman challenges Ashley and fuels his passion in design. His most admired designer, the late Alexander McQueen, remains a lasting influence, not just in fashion design, but also in carving individualism. Fame has not come easily, and neither has it changed Ashley. A “passionate perfectionist”, Ashley works hard, chalking in 12-hour days in his London studio, juggling between email messaging, sketching, dealing with suppliers and clients. Ashley’s boutiques are now in London, the Middle East, Russia and Singapore. He continues to collaborate with Singapore’s designers and brands and is very encouraged by Singapore’s fashion scene, which he describes as going through ‘a resurgence’. Ashley reasons” “People in Singapore are now seeing that you can make a real living as a designer.” About time too, because as Ashley maintains: “Asian designers are good.”
