Look East: Korean Film Fest launches in Hollywood
Asian stars to cast prints at Grauman's Chinese
By PAT SAPERSTEIN variety.com
The first ever Look East: Korean Film Festival will launch June 23 and 24 in Hollywood with a weekend of notable Korean film talent.
Headed by producer Martha Chang, fest will take advantage of the fact that Los Angeles has the largest population of people of Korean descent outside Korea.
"Korea and its influences, whether it be in movies, food or music, seems to be everywhere," said Chang.
Directors whose work will screen at the event include Kwon Taek Im, Jee-woon Kim and Chang-dong Lee.
Longtime champion of Korean cinema Pierre Rissient will be recognized for his contributions to Asian films.
As part of the celebration, stars from Korea including actors Byung-hun Lee ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and Sung-ki Ahn will cast their hand and footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater, where screenings will also be held.
"American filmmakers and audiences have always been intrigued with the Far East and especially with action stars from that part of the world," said "G.I. Joe" movie producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. |

Lee Byung Hun Feels Pressured by All the Attention
Source: Nate l CJ E&M enewsWorld Lee, JinHo Translation Credit: Erika Kim
Lee Byung Hun, star of G.I.Joe 2, confessed that he felt pressured by all the interest Korea has given him.
The actor made the confession at the press day event for G.I.Joe 2 held on April 25 in Seoul.
As the event featured the now ‘Hollywood actor’ Lee Byung Hun, many fans from inside and outside the country were present along with a crowd of press members. More attention was given him as it had been announced that he would be one of the first Asian actors to cast his hand print on the Walk of Fame.
“I’m so honored to be a part of an event that I never dreamed of attending before,” he said on the event. “It’s really a big honor. I think it’ll be a happy event.”
The Walk of Fame first came into being in 1927, and since has gathered the hand prints of about 268 actors, directors and producers, including Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood and Brad Pitt.
The only Asian to have his hands and feet printed on the Walk of Fame is the Hong Kong director John Woo. 85 years after his marks were printed on the Walk, Lee Byung Hun and Ahn Sung Ki will be leaving their own as the first Asian actors, not entertainer or celebrity of Asian descent, to do so.
When MC Ryu Si Hyun mentioned that the main poster concentrates on him more than Bruce Willis or Dwayne Jones, Lee Byung Hun answered, “I think it’s because it’s the Korean poster. I’m pressured because it feels like I’m being made to be greater than my role.”
When MC Ryu explained that he is featured as a main actor on the main page of G.I.Joe 2’s official website, he continued modestly, “I don’t understand what happened there, too.”
Lastly, he finished, “I was able to work more comfortably because I had been through [something similar] before. Still, it did feel unfamiliar because I was working with new staff members. It’s up to the actor to overcome that.”

Lee Byung Hun, the star of the Hollywood film G.I.Joe 2, revealed how he felt about the praise given him by his costar Bruce Willis.
The press day event for G.I.Joe 2 was held on April 25 in Seoul. Lee Byung Hun attended the event and talked about how he felt about the film.
Lee Byung Hun said to a question asking how he felt about Bruce Willis’ praise, “I think he was being polite, and I think he said that to help with promotion. Personally, I’m very thankful.”
In an interview with MTV, Bruce Willis mentioned Lee Byung Hun and said that his acting is “so great.” He added, “Action guys do things that I would never do. I can′t even call myself an action guy. This guy, Byung Hun, we′re going to put him in another movie, he′s so great. He′s just awesome.”
Lee Byung Hun answered the praise, saying, “I can’t dare be better than the Bruce Willis in Die Hard. I’m honored and happy that he has good feelings for me. I personally hope that he can show us something even better.”
“After shooting the film, I can’t say that this film is going to be fun, but I feel after my few months of shooting that it’s going to be even better than the prequel,” he finished.
G.I.Joe 2, starring Lee Byung Hun, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum and Adrianne Palicki, will premiere in the summer. The film will first start screening in America on June 29.

Lee Byung Hun and Ahn Sung Ki First Asian Actors on Walk of Fame
Source: Nate l CJ E&M enewsWorld Lee, JinHo Translation Credit : Erika Kim
Ahn Sung Ki and Lee Byung Hun are to be the first Asian actors to leave their hand prints on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
The Look East Festival revealed on April 25 that ‘actors Ahn Sung Ki and Lee Byung Hun were chosen as the leads for the main event of the Korean Film Festival.’
On June 23, the two will meet in front of the Grauman′s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to cast their hand prints and foot prints on the Walk of Fame.
A rep from Look East stated, “Lee Byung Hun has been recognized for his acting in A Bittersweet Life, which was invited to the Cannes Film Festival, and The Good, The Bad, The Weird. The charisma he most recently showed in the G.I.Joe series also took over Hollywood.”
Ahn Sung Ki was also recognized when he was brought in through the recommendations of Korean film officials and the Korean Film Producers Association after his success with Unbowed.
The Korean Film Festival to be held from June 23-24 will feature not only Ahn Sung Ki and Lee Byung Hun, but also Clint Eastwood, Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, Im Kwon Taek and Lee Chang Dong.

Lee Byung Hun Will Bare Himself Again for Next Film
Source: Nate l CJ E&M enewsWorld Lee, JinHo Translation Credit: Erika Kim
Lee Byung Hun revealed that he would be baring his chest again for his comeback film in Korea, King of Joseon, at the G.I.Joe 2 press day event held on April 25 in Seoul.
Lee Byung Hun said to a question MC Ryu Si Hyun asked on how he got his six packs, “Because we were making real a scene from a comic, I wanted to be perfect. I had no choice but to work out. (Laugh) I was relatively slimmer for the prequel, but this time I worked hard to get a chunky body.”
The actor took on the role of Storm Shadow to take on a slew of big action scenes. In the process, he had to open up his six packs, along with a bigger and chunkier body compared to how he appeared in the original G.I.Joe.
“It didn’t take long for the six packs to become a one pack after coming to Korea,” he said. “It’s not easy to maintain. In the film [King of Joseon], however, there’s a scene in which I have to take off my clothes. It was good though that the director wanted a normal body this time.”
He finished, “I can never say that a film is going to be fun when I’m promoting it after shooting it, but I feel after my few months of shooting that it’s going to be even better than the prequel,” he finished.
G.I.Joe 2, starring Lee Byung Hun, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum and Adrianne Palicki, will premiere in the summer. The film will first start screening in America on June 29.
