  Mudah cetak  | E-mel

Dia dibebaskan sementara menunggu perbicaraan setelah membayar wang ikat jamin selepas tamat prosiding mahkamah semalam.

- BHM.

Principal faces 2 sex charges in Malaysia

The head of Muslim enrichment centre here is accused of raping and molesting 10-year-old girl in his Johor home; centre suspends his services

By Tanya Fong

A PRINCIPAL of a Muslim enrichment centre here was charged in a Malaysian court yesterday with raping and molesting a 10-year-old girl.

Norhisham had very little contact with the children at the centre here. -- NEW STRAITS TIMES

Norhisham Abdul Rauf, 34, a Malaysian who lived in Gelang Patah in Johor, is alleged to have committed the offences in his home at 7, Jalan Timor 22, Taman Timor.

He is accused of raping her there on Aug 28, and of molesting her in April.

Norhisham claimed trial to the two charges in the Sessions Court.

He was employed as a principal at the Andalus enrichment centre in Bukit Batok about three years ago.

There are nine such centres in Singapore owned by Andalus Corporation.

It is not known how many youngsters study at these centres but the one in Bukit Batok has several hundred attending its classes.

The centres run weekly basic Muslim moral values and etiquette programmes for children, from pre-schoolers to teenagers.

The director of human resource and training at Andalus Corporation, Mr Abdullah Othman, told The Straits Times: 'We were very shocked when we heard the news on Monday. He had an amicable and pleasant personality.'

The enrichment centre has suspended his services until the outcome of the trial.

Mr Abdullah said: 'Norhisham did not teach in the school, so he had very little contact with the children.

'He was the principal, and was in charge of administrative matters like managing the programme schedules.'

The New Straits Times reported yesterday that the prosecuting officer, Assistant Superintendent Kalawan Singh, asked for bail to be posted at RM$15,000 (S$6,642) because of the gravity of the offence.

But Norhisham's lawyer, Mr Hussin Othman, argued against it on the grounds that his client was innocent until proven guilty.

Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin set bail at RM$10,000.

The case will be mentioned again on Jan 10 next year, pending completion of reports from the Malaysian Chemistry Department.

23 expats and S'poreans arrested in cocaine swoop By Ben Nadarajan

THE British editor of Singapore Tatler magazine and an award-winning French chef were among 23 people arrested in a swoop on a suspected cocaine trafficking ring on Thursday and yesterday.

They included expatriates and Singaporeans, brokers, businessmen, a young director of a shipping company and executives, including one whom sources said was always driven around in a Rolls-Royce.

Most were picked up on suspicion of having or consuming drugs, but three face the death penalty if found guilty of drug trafficking.

They are Singaporean Marx Oh Chee Wee, 31, a director of events management company Zero Event Concepts; Tunisian Guiga Lyes Ben Laroussi, 35, marketing manager of Bobby Rubino's restaurant; and his Singaporean girlfriend, Mariana Abdullah, 24.

Tatler editor Nigel Bruce Simmonds, 35, and chef Francois Fabien Mermilliod, 29, of the Flutes at the Fort restaurant in Fort Canning, were among 20 nabbed on Thursday for either possessing or consuming drugs.

Five tested positive for drugs, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said.

Also seized in Thursday's operation were 64g of cocaine and small amounts of other party drugs.

CNB deputy director S. Vijakumar said Oh and Laroussi had been watched since mid-August, after the bureau received a tip-off.

Early on Thursday morning, officers staked out Laroussi's apartment at Moulmein Green condominium along Moulmein Road.

They watched as four men visited Laroussi in the space of seven hours, beginning at noon.

The men were trailed, and later stopped by officers who found a variety of drugs on them, Mr Vijakumar said.

The four were charged yesterday with drug possession.

Simmonds is accused of having 0.8g of Ice on him, while Mermilliod is accused of having a packet containing 0.5g of cocaine in his haversack.

Also charged were Singaporeans Andy Ng Kwang Thiam, a 23-year-old director of well-known local shipping company Ng Teow Yhee and Sons, and technician Hamden Mohd, 35.

Laroussi was nabbed on Thursday night, when he left his apartment. Officers found a cocktail of drugs - 61.2g of cocaine, 5.4g of ketamine, 2.6g of Ice, 1.3g of cannabis and 32 Ecstasy pills - in his home.

The drugs had a street value of over $20,000.

Mariana was in the apartment and was also arrested.

Another team of CNB officers then arrested Oh at his house at Hyde Park Gate in Seletar Camp, where they found 2.3g of cocaine and 23.6g of cannabis.

Compiling a list of the alleged syndicate's clients, officers then spent the rest of the night hauling in more suspected drug users.

More arrests may follow, the CNB said.

artikel sambungan pasal cocaine ni

Singapore's cocaine circle
They tend to meet while doing business or at social gatherings

By Ben Nadarajan

THE cocaine-snorting circle in Singapore appears to be a small and tightly knit group.

Its members are quite distinct from hardcore heroin addicts and yuppie party drug abusers, in that they tend to meet while doing business or at social gatherings, and will introduce each other to the drug as well as the syndicate selling it.

However, sources said these people usually use the drugs for personal consumption. They don't dish it out at private parties.

Most consume the coke in the privacy of their homes, although some take it just before they hit the pubs in their flashy sports cars or luxury sedans.

Among the 23 people arrested in a swoop on a suspected cocaine trafficking ring this week, 16 were Singaporeans, two permanent residents and five foreigners.

Tunisian Guiga Lyes Ben Laroussi, 35, marketing manager at Bobby Rubino's restaurant, is the alleged link-man of the syndicate.

Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers had been tailing Laroussi for the past two months and had spotted him on several occasions meeting suspected drug addicts outside pubs in popular nightspot areas such as Mohamed Sultan.

Bobby Rubino's owner, Mr Jimmy Hsiao, said Laroussi had called in on Wednesday, the day before his arrest, to ask for a few days off as his girlfriend's family was visiting from Malaysia.

Mr Hsiao said Laroussi had started work at the restaurant about four months ago but had worked in Singapore before and 'knew a lot of expats here'.

According to CNB records, the last time an expatriate was arrested for trafficking drugs here was way back in 1991 when Dutchman Johannes van Damme was caught with 4.3kg of heroin at the Changi Airport. He was hanged.

Another expat who was arrested is Briton Nigel Bruce Simmonds, 35, a writer at The Expat Magazine before he became Tatler bureau chief in April and editor of Singapore Tatler, a high-society magazine.

He is married to a Japanese woman, who recently gave birth to a daughter.

Staff at the magazine were waiting yesterday morning for Simmonds to show up for a meeting with the magazine's managing director Andrew Thomas to discuss stories for the next issue.

The meeting started without Simmonds and ended two hours later, with him still absent.

One of his friends said: 'Nigel comes in late to work at times, but when the meeting ended and he still hadn't shown up, we started getting worried.'

His mobile phone was switched off.

When told the news, Mr Thomas declined to comment until he has a 'clearer picture of the situation'.

Like Simmonds, award-winning French chef Francois Fabien Mermilliod, 29, has been charged with possessing drugs. He was mentioned in a recent issue of the Tatler.

He worked in several restaurants here such as Au Petit Salut and Duo Restaurant, before he joined Flutes At The Fort, a fusion restaurant in Fort Canning.

Mermilliod, who recently received a culinary award from the World Gourmet Summit, 'went missing' after lunch hour on Thursday and did not return, said his colleagues.

His wife called the restaurant to say he was sick.

Although few expatriates have been arrested for drug consumption in Singapore, CNB deputy director S. Vijakumar issued a strong warning to the community.

'We do not go easy on our enforcement on drugs. We will spare no community that gets involved,' he said.

GOLONGAN ELIT DIBERKAS CNB KERANA DADAH

Laroussi, Mariana dan seorang lagi warga Singapura, Marx Oh Chee Wah, 31 tahun, seorang pengarah firma pengurusan acara, menghadapi hukuman gantung jika didapati bersalah mengedar dadah.

Kesemuanya, 64 gram kokain dirampas selain beberapa dadah 'pesta'. Turut dirampas ialah sepucuk pistol replika.

Menurut CNB, operasi itu belum berakhir.

Superman star Christopher Reeve dies BEDFORD, New York - Christopher Reeve, the star of the Superman movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.

Reeve fell into a coma on Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home and died on Sunday, his publicist Wesley Combs told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C.

The actor was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound that he developed, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection.

'On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband,' Mrs Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, said in a statement. 'I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years.'

Girl thrown from flat dies
A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl flung off the corridor of a Telok Blangah block last week died on Tuesday afternoon without regaining consciousness at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

The police said on Tuesday that they intend to amend the charge against a woman who was arrested shortly after Sindee Neo's fall, from attempted murder to murder.

If convicted, Constance Chee Cheong Hin, 35, will face the gallows. The unemployed woman is accused of throwing the girl off one of the high floors of Block 1, Telok Blangah Crescent last Thursday at 4.44 am.

Sindee crashed through an aluminium shelter near the lift lobby of the block before falling face first onto the concrete floor.

Although the metal structure helped break her fall, the impact left her with a fractured jaw and she fled profusely from head injuries which left her in a coma.

The dead girl's father said on Tuesday he had been hopeful Sindee would survive.

'I would be glad even if she continued to live as a vegetable, but this is difficult to accept,' said Mr Neo, 32, an odd-job labourer.

SEWA GERAI DI BAZAR GEYLANG SERAI MEROSOT 50%
Hanya 80 peratus ditempah, penganjur terkejut dengan sambutan lembap

Oleh
Farid Hamzah
