Ex-international Michael needs help

PETALING JAYA: The National Sports Council (NSC) core sport抯 bowling officer Allan Lee has initiated a donation drive for former international Michael Chuah.

Michael, the 1983 AMF World Cup runner-up and the 1985 national Sportsman of the Year, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and needs more than RM30,000 for medical treatment.

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) have started the ball rolling with a RM5,000 donation. Donors can make their contributions through the MTBC.

No need for donation, says Michael

PETALING JAYA: Former international bowler Michael Chuah, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer, thanked the National Sports Council and the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) for initiating a donation drive to help him settle his medical bill.

The 69-year-old Michael, discharged from hospital last Friday after surgery, said: 揑 would like to thank all the donors for their concern over my illness. I am all right now.

Sharon gets to team up with veteran Shalin in the doubles

PETALING JAYA: Debutant bowler Sharon Koh has scored a first in the women抯 World Championships in Mexico even before the start of the tournament.

Following excellent form during the official practice session on Friday at the AMF Bol Obispada at Monterrey, the 19-year-old Sharon has won the right to team up with season campaigner Shalin Zulkifli as the first pair in the world meet抯 first event

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's top two pairs dropped out of the medal contention in the doubles event on the opening day of the women's World Championships at the AMF Bol Obispada in Monterrey on Saturday.

But the performances of debutants Sharon Koh and Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi certainly made up for Malaysia's disappointment in missing out on a medal.

The 19-year-old Sharon, who teamed up with seasoned campaigner Shalin Zulkifli for the first time in a major tournament, justified the faith the coaches had in her. She kept her cool to fire lines of 221-248-221-224-204-211 for a six-game total of 1,329.

It was better than Shalin's score of 1,324. Shalin started well by firing lines of 225-200 but slipped with a poor 147 in the third game. She recovered with lines of 248-257-247.

Sharon and Shalin were in second place with a total of 2,653 pins after the first squad ended. But they dropped to the fourth spot when the two other squads completed their sessions.

World youth doubles gold medallist Esther Cheah and Zandra had contrasting fortunes when they got into action in the third squad.

Esther struggled to be consistent with lines of 222-195-176-202-268-203 (1,266) but Zandra maintained her composure for a score of 1,311 (225-204-221-231-203-227). Their total of 2,577 put them in eighth spot after three squads' play.

If world championship rookies Sharon and Zandra continue to handle the pressure well, they will play an instrumental role in helping Malaysia's bid to regain the team title.

Malaysia's third pair Wendy Chai-Choy Poh Lai are in the fourth and final squad of bowlers but no high hopes have been placed on them.

The three pairs now in medal positions are South Koreans Choi Jin-a-Nam Bo-ra and Gye Min-young-Kim Yeau-jin and Americans Lynda Barnes-Tennelle Milligan.

Disappointment in opening doubles event runs into trios

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian bowlers' disappointment in the women's World Championships ran into the trios event at the AMF Bol Obispada in Monterrey, Mexico, on Sunday.

Their first big disappointment was in the opening event of the championships, the doubles, which was played over two days from Saturday.

Esther, Sharon and Shalin perform better in second block

PETALING JAYA: A medal continued to elude Malaysia after two events of the women's World Bowling Championships at the AMF Bol Obispada in Monterrey, Mexico.

But the Malaysian bowlers generally gave a better account of themselves in the second block of the trios competition on Monday and it has raised some hope that they will strike it right in the remaining events.

The first Malaysian combination of Esther Cheah, Sharon Koh and Shalin Zulkifli chalked up a total of 3,689 for 11th place. They had a second block total of 1,934 against 1,755 in the first block on Sunday.

The second Malaysian trio of Wendy Chai, Zandra Aziela and Choy Poh Lai had a total of 3,383 (1,705-1,678) for 43rd place.

Women bag gold at World Bowling Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia emerged as the world's best team after a lapse of four years in the women's World Championships at Monterrey, Mexico, on Wednesday.

The team of five - Shalin Zulkifli, Esther Cheah, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, Wendy Chai, Sharon Koh - amassed 6,323 pins to beat the fancied United States by a mere seven pins for the world title.

It was the team's first medal in the tournament after firing blanks in the doubles and trios events.

Esther and Shalin fire our girls to third place after first block

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian bowlers finally showed what they are capable of by blazing the lanes in the second squad to move into a strong medal contention position in the team event of the women抯 world championships at the AMF Bol Obispada in Monterrey, Mexico on Tuesday.  

After finishing empty handed in the doubles and trios events, there is much hope on the all-fired up team of five to get their act right in the second block of competition and hopefully bag the coveted gold medal for Malaysia.

Malaysia fielded the gold medal-winning line-up from the Doha Asian Games. Esther Cheah was the lead bowler, followed by Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, Sharon Koh and Wendy Chai with Shalin Zulkifli taking on the anchor role.  

And the magic rubbed off with Malaysia finishing as the leaders of the second squad with a total score of 3,218, ahead of the in-form South Koreans, before ending as the third best team overall.

England, boosted by a perfect game from Kirsten Penny, are the overall leaders on 3,310 pinfalls, followed by Indonesia on 3,252, after the first block.

Malaysia trail England by just 92 pinfalls and they certainly stand a bright chance of grabbing the gold if they can put up another solid performance in the second block.  

Malaysian team manager Cheah Ban Cheng said a stern pep talk by coach Holloway Cheah the previous night made the difference.

揟his was the event we were targeting to win and the girls finally woke up.  

揟hey were all fired up to prove something after not winning a medal in the doubles and trios earlier.  

揝halin, Esther and Zandra carried the team well in the first block by reeling off high games to put us in a good position.

PETALING JAYA: Tears of joy flowed freely as the Malaysian women bowlers, coaches and team officials hugged each other in the World Championships at the AMF Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico, on Wednesday.

After firing blanks in the doubles and trios, the fired-up five-woman team led by Shalin Zulkifli bounced back to hand the country a splendid 50th Merdeka gift when they emerged as the world抯 best team again after a lapse of four years.

The challenge is far from over for rejuvenated Shalin

PETALING JAYA: After a quiet year without any titles, seasoned campaigner Shalin Zulkifli showed that she is back at her best again with an outstanding showing in the ongoing women抯 World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico.

On Wednesday, the 29-year-old blazed the lanes with lines of 267-236-247-224-236-224 for a 1,434 total, which is the third highest individual total in the tournament抯 history.

And currently, she is Malaysia抯 highest ranked bowler in the All-Events at sixth spot with a 3,980 total.  

She has a good chance of making the top 16 cut for the prestigious Masters event.

Bowling: Wendy finally comes good

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Wendy Chai saved her best for last when she nailed her first-ever individual medal in the women抯 World Championships at the AMF Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico, on Thursday.  

After inconsistent performances in the doubles, trios and five-woman team, the 30-year-old Wendy made a remarkable comeback in the singles to win a bronze with a score of 1,302 pins (224-213-180-219-224-242).

The United States finally bagged their first gold in the tournament through Shannon O扠eefe. She amassed 1,362 pins.

Australian Ann-Maree Putney took the silver with a 1,336 total.

Wendy was also in the five-woman team who won a gold on Wednesday but her six-game score of 1,157 pins was the lowest compared to Shalin Zulkifli (1434), Esther Cheah (1335), Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi (1232) and Sharon Koh (1165).

But on Thursday, Wendy turned on the power to come good in her third world outing.

National chief coach Holloway Cheah said Wendy had justified the faith he had on her.

Agonising end to our women抯 campaign in world championships

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's campaign in the women抯 World Bowling Championships at Monterrey, Mexico ended with heartbreaks for Shalin Zulkifli and Esther Cheah at the AMF Bol Obispado on Friday.

Shalin and Esther were beaten in the most painful way in the first round of the Masters event which was contested over a best-of-five games format.

For both, a stubborn pin 10 that refused to fall in the ninth (for Esther) and tenth (Shalin) frames in the decider (fifth game), dashed their hopes.

The 29-year-old Shalin went down 2-3 (189-170, 189-219, 213-181, 171-225, 218-226) to Mexican Adriana Perez. And with the defeat, Shalin has again failed in her bid to win an individual gold medal in her fifth world outing.

It was a much closer and intense fight between Esther and Singaporean Jazreel Tan but eventually, Jazreel romped home with a 3-2 win

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigners Shalin Zulkifli and Wendy Chai are likely to put off plans to end their stints with the national team now that professional bowlers have been given the nod to compete in international tournaments.
