Hamilton scoops Laureus prize
McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, an Englishman, has won theLaureus World Sports Award as Breakthrough Sportsman of the Year, arecognition of sporting achievement by a relative newcomer.
Also nominated in the Breakthrough category were Serbian tennis playerNovak Djokovic, who reached the semifinals of the French Open andWimbledon, and the final of the US Open; Australian [color=#033cc ! important]MotoGP championCasey Stoner; Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador, winner of the Tour deFrance; and South African Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius, a doubleamputee world record holder at 100, 200 and 400 meters.
Hamilton and fellow [color=#033cc ! important]Formula One driver, Finland's Kimi Raikkonen,Ferrari's reigning world champion, were nominated for Laureus prizes.Raikkonen was nominated as Sportsman of the Year along with Swiss tennisplayer Roger Federer, Brazilian footballer Kaka, American swimmerMichael Phelps, American golfer Tiger Woods and American sprinter TysonGay.
Federer won for a fourth consecutive year, the most dominant display ofany sportsman in the nine-year history of the awards. Formula One driverMichael Schumacher of Germany won the top prize twice, in 2002 and 2004.Woods (2000 and 2001) is the only other multiple winner. Justine Henintook the Sportswoman of the Year award; no woman has won the designationmore than once in nine years.
The annual awards recognize the top accomplishments in sport for thepast year. Prizes were awarded this year in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Hamilton, 23, joined McLaren's F1 team after a decade of support by thecompany. He thereafter shattered rookie expectations by reaching 12podiums, winning four races, taking six pole positions and leading theWorld Drivers Championship race. He finished tied for second in thatcompetition with then teammate double world champion Fernando Alonso.They placed a point behind winner Raikkonen.
The Laureus World Sports Awards were established in 1999 by foundersDaimlerChrysler and Richemont and first given in 2000. Winners aredetermined by a two-part voting process. Sports editors, writersand broadcasters from 80 countries vote to place six nominees intocategories including sportsman and sportswoman of the year, team of theyear, breakthrough of the year, comeback of the year, sportsperson witha disability, action sportsperson and lifetime achievement. Also awardedare Sport for Good and Spirit of Sport awards. Members of the LaureusWorld Sports Academy vote by secret ballot to determine winners. Thesports academy is made up of people regarded as living legends of sport.

kalo ikutkan kamus..maksud sebenar englishman adalah penduduk asal tanah england (orang kulit putih)bukan orang negro(berasal dari afrika)
jd layak ke hamilton digelar englishman?kalo aku (orang asia) duduk kat england sejak lahir..jadi aku secara automatik digelar englishman..mcm tu ke?

Aku rasa dlm kes lewis tu... englishman tu dia refer sbg 1 negara... bukan 1 kaum. Sbb calon2 lain pun datang dr mcm2 negara kan.
Takpun sbb bahasa harian dia english.

Cth aku dok Malaysia tapi bahasa english sebagai bahasa harian.Jd aku digelar englishman.Kira ada dua gelaran la..englishman malaysian..macam tu kot
jd pendapat aku..maybe hamilton bleh digelar britishman,african britishman .Kalo englishman tu mcm tak sesuai.. |

aku rasa taun ni alonso tak dapek nak menyerlah......keta renault dia masih macam taun lepas....lembap....walupon Marc Gene cakap Renault mungkin sembunyikan kebolehan keta dia..tapi aku lebih cenderung percaya keta renault memang tak besh.... |
