Bowling: Zatil dropped from Qatar Open
By : Ajitpal Singh
KORAT Sea Games triple gold medallist Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani has been excluded from the Qatar International Open starting tomorrow because she is not under the elite programme.

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) had recommended Zatil, who is a member of the national back-up squad, and seven other bowlers under the elite programme, for the tournament to the National Sports Council (NSC) for clearance.
However, the NSC only approved those in the elite programme and dropped Zatil. The reason given by the NSC to the MTBC was simply she was not a member of the elite programme.
MTBC High Performance manager Cheah Ban Cheng, confirmed that Zatil was excluded from the Qatar-bound team due to her status as only a back-up bowler.
The bowlers, given the greenlight to compete in Qatar, are Alex Liew, Adrian Ang, Daniel Lim, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Aaron Kong, Mohd Noer Said and Shalin Zulkifli.
The MTBC has recommended Zatil for the elite programme but has yet to receive word from the NSC.
Zatil, 19, was a last minute call up for last year's Korat Sea Games after Wendy Chai and Choy Poh Lai opted out due to injuries.
She was included in the Sea Games team after a string of good results in international 'Open' tournaments. Her most outstanding result last year was winning the Singapore Open.
Meanwhile, NSC public relations official Fahmi Omar said the reason Zatil was left out was there were different programmes for elite and back-up bowlers.
"However, Zatil will soon be going places as she will be promoted under the elite programme soon," Fahmi said. |

Bowling: Kin Ngoh, Joh Six reach last eight
By : Ajitpal Singh
FORMER national bowlers Lai Kin Ngoh and Tang Joh Six, against all odds, reached the quarter-finals of the ABF Tour's Tournament of Champions at the Jaya Ancol Bowl in Jakarta yesterday.
The Hong Kong-based Kin Ngoh, who was placed sixth with 1,651 pinfalls in Friday's first block, posted lines of 220, 190, 182, 209, 184, 176, 163 in yesterday's second block to finish seventh overall in the women's section with a 15-game total of 2,975.
Joh Six occupied eighth position with a 2,963 total.
Their qualification to the second round came as a surprise as both bowlers have not been competing regularly in the Asian Tour.
Kin Ngoh will face Korat Sea Games silver medallist Happy Soediyono of Indonesia in today's quarter-finals.
Joh Six, who hails from Sarawak, plays last year's CCM Selangor Open finalist Putty Armein of Indonesia for a place in the last four. |

Bowling: Esther forced to turn professional
Esther Cheah. |
ESTHER Cheah has decided to follow in Shalin Zulkifli's footsteps and turn professional.

Esther, who will compete in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Women's Tour in the United States, has no choice but to turn pro as she is barred from representing her university in the Inter-College tournaments.
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) bylaws state that only amateur athletes are allowed to compete in Inter-College tournaments.
Esther, who is studying psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is considered a professional bowler as she was earning a living from the sport when in Malaysia.
National chief coach Holloway Cheah, said NCAA's stand has prompted his daughter to turn pro.
"My daughter was not interested in turning professional at first but circumstances are such that she has to in order to compete regularly," said Holloway at the Pyramid Megalanes in Bandar Sunway yesterday.
"We Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) have written an appeal letter to NCAA to consider reverting its decision but have yet to receive a reply."
However, he stressed that Esther and Shalin will only turn professional when the National Sports Council (NSC) gives its approval.
- NATIONAL back-up bowler Jonathan Lim led the Men's Open qualifying masters of the National Bowling Championships at the Pyramid Megalanes yesterday.
He posted a four-game total of 983 followed by Daniel Lim (966) and Alex Liew (938).
Zatil Iman leads the women's section on 941, followed by Sin Li Jane (922) and Shalin (880).
The qualifying round ends tomorrow. |

Bowling: Young Fahmi strikes a double
By : AJITPAL SINGH
NATIONAL youth bowler Fahmi Bahri Sulaiman (pic), against all odds, nailed his first career senior title when he bowled over several experienced keglers to win the National Championships men's Open at the Pyramid Megalanes in Bandar Sunway yesterday.

Fahmi, who hails from Johor Baru, also picked up the national youth title.
The 20-year-old Fahmi defeated former national bowler Mustafa Yassin 223-146 and 246-186 in the best of three games final to pick up the winner's cheque of RM7,000.
"It's like a dream. I did not expect to win," said Fahmi, a pre-university student of Bandar Penawar Sports School.
"I felt nervous in the final but I told myself that as long I keep my composure, I would win it."
However, despite winning the national title, Fahmi said he was not planning to make bowling a life long career.
"I do not want to put so much hope on the sport as I think it's better to concentrate on my studies. I will only represent my state when I start my sports science degree programme in UiTM next year," said Fahmi.
Fahmi, who finished third in the Masters on 2,242, defeated national senior bowler Adrian Ang 2-0 (257-205, 237-182) in the quarter-finals before edging former national bowler Azidi Ameran 2-1 (192-204, 195-165, 202-179) to earn a crack at the title.
Earlier, Fahmi won the national youth title with a 10-game total of 2,140.
Meanwhile, Sharon Koh won her second women's national title when she defeated Shalin Zulkifli 2-0 (205-184, 215-193).
Sharon, the 2005 national champion, is counting on the win to inspire her in major assignments this year.
En route to the final, Sharon -- who finished third in the women's Masters on 2,099 -- beat Tengku Emanina Tengku Zahri 2-0 (202-141, 201-185) in the last eight before defeating Nur Syakirah Yeoh 2-0 (247-215, 204-203) in the semi-finals. |
