The final pre-season group test ahead of the Australian Grand Prix got underway today with the now familiar damp circuit greeting the ten teams in attendance. With 19 drivers on track the circuit dried as the day progressed with Lewis Hamilton setting the pace with a best lap of 1:22.276s in his McLaren Mercedes.
Ferrari had defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen as well as seven-time champion Michael Schumacher on hand. The duo recorded the second and third fastest times respectively, both less than two-tenths off Hamilton抯 pace. Kazuke Nakajima continued his impressive pre-season programme with Williams Toyota with the fourth fastest time just ahead of Heikki Kovalainen抯 McLaren and team-mate Nico Rosberg in the second FW30.
Fernando Alonso continued to lead the way at Renault with the seventh fastest time, seven-tenths off the ultimate pace, while Nelson Piquet was 15th in the second R28. Over at BMW Sauber Nick Heidfeld was eighth fastest while new test driver Christian Klien was 14th best.
It was the first day of working with the updated VJM01 chassis for Adrian Sutil who was an impressive ninth fastest ahead of Mark Webber in the leading Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel in the sole Toro Rosso and Tonio Liuzzi in the second VJM01.
Towards the rear of the field Kamui Kobayashiwas 16th for Toyota ahead of the Honda抯 Rubens Barrichello and Alex Wurz. David Coulthard completed just 25 laps and was slowest in his Red Bull Renault.
Contrary to claims from some drivers, McLaren are still showing well against main rival Ferrari, but as ever, testing and racing are very different disciplines.
