Malaysia's gas emission doubles

Malaysia was included in a list of 70 countries with high human development in the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report 2007/2008.

But the pretty picture is accompanied by a grim fact - Malaysia is the world's 26th largest emitter of climate-changing greenhouse gases.

The figures are significant because the report released yesterday warned that any gains in human development would be reversed if countries failed to address climate change.

"If we do not act quickly we are going to roll back the development gains in the last century," said Dr Richard Leete, United Nations resident co-ordinator and UNDP's resident representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Malaysia ranked 63rd among the 70 countries in the high human development index which measures life expectancy, educational attainment and adjusted real income.

This is the second year Malaysia is in the high development index. Malaysia's HDI was rated 0.811, an improvement from 0.805 last year. In 1980 and 1990, the rating was 0.659 and 0.723 respectively.

Malaysia's greenhouse gas emissions was more than double the amount in 1990 said UNDP's programme manager for environment and energy Asfaazam Kasbani.

The country emitted 7.5 gigatonnes of greenhouse gas per capita now compared with three gigatonnes per capita in 1990, he said.

"Transportation and industry sectors were found to be the main contributor of emissions," he added.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohd Effendi Norwawi said the government would continue to prioritise the conservation of national forests and work with regional and international partners.

He said the government had begun formulating a national framework to address climate change issues. In a speech read by Malaysian Development Institute director Prof Datuk Dr Nor Azlan Ghazali, he said emphasis would be placed on integrating the efforts of all ministries and agencies.

imho, Datuk Seri Effendi Norwawi needs to do much more than just "conservation of national forests".

Implementation & enforcement wrt conservation macamana?  Is it effective?

Hari hari tengok dlm tivi pasal illegal logging etc, tapi still same old issues without much improvement.:@ :@  Aku rasa Karam Singh Walia pun penat nanti report mende yang samaaaa jer..

Additionally, now dah tahu transportation & industry sectors as the main contributors to these greenhouse effects, buat la something impactful fast. Jangan tunggu dah chronic baru nak ambil tindakan.. too little too late lah nanti..

e.g. regulate/ revisit law wrt gas emission & enforce it.. jangan la law/ regulation tu buat kumpul habuk je kat office..

i think the public pun boleh come up with suggestions to tackle this issue, apatah lagi think tank kat PM's Dept..
