In the chilling, often heartbreaking first episode of the k-drama Lie After Lie, Ji Eun-soo, played by Lee Yu-ri, finds her life eviscerated by a series of lies, each of which uses knife-like precision to sever what she holds dear. Found bloody at the scene of her husband’s murder, Eun-soo is accused of killing him even though she protests her innocence. She had plenty of reasons to stab her often vicious husband, which viewers learn in a triggering sequence of domestic violence, but she denies her part in his death. Her husband was the heir of a wealthy family, headed by a monomaniacal mother, who uses her immense power to construct a complicated web of lies, ensuring that Eun-soo’s side of the story is never heard.
Eun-Soo is sent to jail, where she gives birth to her husband’s child and must protect her baby from fellow inmates. If only she would lie, her father suggests, and say she committed the murder after prolonged incidents of domestic abuse, her sentence might be shortened and she could care for her child, but Eun-soo continues to insist she did not commit the crime. Sadly, her father’s efforts don’t matter. Even if Eun-soo would lie and say she committed the crime in self-defense, any evidence of domestic abuse has mysteriously disappeared. She writes a heartfelt letter to a reporter, Kang Ji-min, played by Yeon Jung-hun, who seriously considers the possibility of a wrong verdict and tries to help her, but Eun-soo’s vengeful mother-in-law keeps them from meeting. Eun-soo and her daughter are not only alone in the world but they remain in danger, even after she serves her full prison term, because there are powerful people who do not want these lies exposed. She will eventually be released from prison and aim to make things right. Although she and Ji-min were kept apart when she was most vulnerable, their lives are inexorably linked and she will need to rely on his help again. He is the only person who suspects she is innocent and, in a weird twist of fate, is now the adoptive father of her daughter. Telling the truth has not served Eun-soo well. After her release from prison, it may seem like lies are what’s needed to right the wrongs inflicted on her. Lee recently appeared in the dramas Spring Turns To Spring, My Father Is Strange and Another Miss Oh. Jung previously starred in the dramas Possessed, My Healing Love and Man To Man.
