Pihak Sarawak Energy arini menafikan kenaikan paras air yang menyebabkan banjir di sekitar kawasan rendah termasuk Kanowit dan Sibu bukan berpunca dari pelepasan air Empangan Bakun.

Our 2,400MW Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) helps to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall within the upstream catchment during the current seasonal rainfall by storing rainwater in the reservoir, reducing the severity of floods for downstream areas along the Rejang river.

The last Bakun controlled release ended on 22 January 2021. Since then, there has been no regulated release through the Bakun HEP spillway and the water level at Bakun reservoir remains normal despite the current wet weather conditions in the central region of Sarawak.

The flooding incidents now affecting downstream areas including Kanowit and Sibu are caused by a combination of unseasonal localised heavy rainfall with the king tide phenomenon, and is not due to the regulated discharge of water from Bakun HEP.
