GlaxoSmithKline admits to misleading public over RibenaGlobal pharmaceutical and food giant GlaxoSmithKline has admitted to misleading the public over the Vitamin C content of blackcurrent drink Ribena.

The company faced charges alleging 15 breaches of New Zealand's Fair Trading Act.

New Zealand's Commerce Commission launched the prosecution after two Auckland school students carried out tests on Ribena as part of a science project.

The Auckland District Court heard today that the commission said while television advertising suggested blackcurrents had four times the vitamin C of oranges, the same could not be said of Ribena.

In fact tests showed ready-to-drink Ribena contained no detectable vitamin C at all.

Anna Devathasan and Jenny Suo, the teenagers who first blew the whistle on Ribena three years ago, were in court to hear the company's guilty plea.

GlaxoSmithKline, which last week made similar admissions in Australia, faces fines of up to $2.5 million.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in Malaysia is mostly planted commercially by the smallholders in Terengganu on the Bris soils. The planting has later been extended to some areas in Johor. Roselle is also known as sorrel, red sorrel, Florida cranberry, rosella and Indian sorrel. The most important edible part is the fleshy sepal (calyx), which is intense red in color with an acidic taste.

The calyx is the part that is left over after the bloom, which is processed to produce juice for drinking. It is very high in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Every 100 gm of fresh calyx will contain about 2.85 礸 vitamin D, 0.04 mg vitamin B1, 0.06 mg vitamin B2, and 0.05 mg vitamin B2 Complex.

The calyx can also be processed to make jam and jelly.

My kids lagi senang...mineral water or air masak je minuman diorg, selain susu laa. Aku mmg tak ajo diorg minum mende2 gini, kalau sekali sekala tu ok la. Kalau kasik pun fruit juice or yogurt drink...tak selalu laa...

well, some kids susah sgt nak minum air kosong.. like my bb pun susah sgt nak bagi dia minum air.. sampai kena sua dgn sudu .. tu pun dia leh sembur kuar kadang2.. well, sometimes dia minum sometimes dia totally reject..
