New motto, spirit to boost police

The new uniform is lighter, flexible, fire retardant and has no metal badges on it, making it easier for the personnel to move.
KUALA LUMPUR: Spirituality, new motto, badge and uniform; these are the tools which will be used to rejuvenate the 201-year-old force.

Tan Sri Musa Hassan shows the new police motto: firm, fair and courteous.
The changes, which were announced at the Police Day celebrations yesterday, are in line with the five-year plan introduced last year to bring the force on par with their counterparts worldwide.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said these changes would enable the 100,000-strong force to address future challenges.
In his speech at the national-level Police Day celebrations at the police training centre here, Musa urged his men to embrace the qualities of their new motto: "Tegas, Adil dan Berhemah" (Firm, Fair and Courteous).
"Learn its true meaning and re-invent yourselves. There should be a change in your mindset."
He said the force needed to remain relevant and this could only be achieved by working professionally, productively and effectively.
The new motto replaces "Mesra, Cepat dan Betul" (Friendly, Swift and Correct), which was introduced by former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Norian Mai in 1999.
Elaborating on the motto, Musa said being firm did not mean the police using force but being committed to executing their duties and responsibilities by knowing the law and the scope of their authority.
Being fair meant taking into account the legislative, executive and judiciary systems when carrying out their duties.
He said being courteous meant they must respect the public's rights.
Later, Musa unveiled the new badge "Integriti Amalan Kita" (Integrity is Our Practice), which replaced the "Saya ANTI Rasuah" or anti-corruption badge introduced by former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar in 2005.
He said the change in the message on the badge reflected the changes the police were making in managing the force.
Taking corruption as an example, Musa said there was a need to tackle it spiritually, meaning the change must come from within the individual.
Musa added: "They should exercise self-control over any attempt to corrupt their integrity."
He then unveiled the new uniform for beat policemen, complemented with new crime-fighting tools such as the T-baton, new semi-automatic gun, pepper spray and a new walkie-talkie set.
Musa said: "The uniform is lighter, flexible, fire retardant and has no metal badges on it, making it easier for the personnel to move."
He presented excellence awards to 11 policemen and one police station.
He also presented MS ISO 9001:2000 accreditation from the Department of Standards Malaysia, United Kingdom Accreditation Service and COFRAC (France) to several police departments. |

Warga polis perlu hayati amanat KPN
