A trip into darkness

It was with great reluctance that I agreed to go with my father and younger brother to Batu Caves during the last school holidays. I抎 been to Batu Caves a few times and did not relish the thought of having to climb those 272 steps under the hot sun again.

The entrance was, as expected, littered with rubbish left behind by both humans and monkeys. There was loud music amidst the hustle and bustle of tourists and local visitors.

Upon reaching the top, I thought the place looked as unimaginative as during my last visit. Building materials could be seen at various corners of the cave, and graffiti tainted the cave walls.

It wasn抰 long before we decided to leave. However, we stumbled by chance upon a plain-looking sign hidden behind some foliage along with a small poster promoting visits to the Dark Cave, organised by the Malaysian Nature Society. Our curiosity piqued, we decided to join the tour.

As we prepared to enter the Dark Cave, our guide checked the batteries in our headlamps and warned us not to stray as it was very easy to get lost, especially if our headlamps ran out of juice. After the customary safety checks and a few more warnings, we were finally ready to set out.

We took in our surroundings as we walked, the dim light casting an eerie shadow on the walls. Our guide led us to where the fruit bats nested, warning us to not cast light directly at them as it would startle them.

An afternoon sunbeam illuminates cavers exploring Batu Caves.

After telling us facts about the fruit bats, he asked us to feel the sand-like texture of the guanos (bat droppings) on the ground. The pungent smell of the guano was overpowering at first, but we got used to it as we moved on.

All was silent as we walked, with the guide pointing out and giving information on interesting sights. When we arrived at a small bridge of sort, we were asked to look down. At first, we couldn抰 see anything although I sensed movement on the floor. Then, as our eyes got accustomed to the dark, we saw that the whole cavern floor was filled with huge cockroaches feeding on the guano!

A few in our group, including my younger brother, who was trying to scramble up my father抯 back, gave a cry of shock. Chills went down my spine as we hurried across the bridge.

After that little scare, our guide pointed out the stalactites and stalagmites, and a wind tunnel where we got to experience cool flowing air that seemed to emanate from a giant natural air-conditioner.

At one point, we were asked to switch off our headlamps. We did as we were told, and we were plunged into pitch darkness. We couldn抰 even see our hands in front of our face. I grasped my father抯 and brother抯 hands in the eerie silence, which was interrupted only occasionally by the sound of flapping wings and the whispers coming from our group.

Now, I know how a blind person feels, and I don抰 think I will be forgetting it anytime soon.

All too soon, we came to the end of our tour. It was really a wonderful experience. To think that I would have missed it had I refused to go to Batu Caves that day. This walk in the Dark Cave in the heart of KL is definitely better than a walk in a shopping mall.

batu caves tu kuil hindu ma.
jgn main2 la dgn kuil hindu ni.

kat sekolah lama aku dulu ada jgk tapak kuil hindu.dia punya pasak la org panggil.
smpi skang pasak dia x bleh buang.
wujud la secara fizikal.
dan smpi skang kwsn tu (dlm kawasan sekolah) masih keras.
kira sapa2 yg buat hal kat situ, ckp besar ke, meludah ke even kalo langkah je pasak tu siap la x tido malam la jawabnya.
ha keras x keras kuil hindu nih.

kalo nak gi melancong gi tempat lain la.x yah la pegi batu caves nih.
