Police said Josef F kept his daughter Elisabeth locked up in a windowlesscellar beneath his home while he fathered seven children by her. He has alsoconfessed that he burned the dead body of one of the children.
Despite adopting three of the children Mr F抯 wife was unaware of the horrorshidden within her own home, police spokesman Colonel Franz Polzer said.It is understood that the father was able to convince his wife that threebabies were left on their doorstep with letters from their daughter. Themother believed that her daughter had run away from home, in fact she wasbeing held captive below ground.

Police have spent the last two days exploring the network of rooms where theysay Elisabeth was first imprisoned on August 28 1984, aged 19, after beingdrugged and handcuffed by her father. The tiny entrance was concealed in aworkshop in a public part of the cellar.
"There was a shelf with plenty of cans and containers, and behind the shelfwas a door made of reinforced concrete, secured electronically and runningon steel rails, and only the suspect knew the code," said Heinz Lenze, alocal police official.
Once inside the dungeon, police reported, they found all the passagesextremely narrow, the ceiling is no higher than 5ft 6ins (170cm) and thefloors uneven. They have found a makeshift shower room, cooking rings forthe secret family to heat food, and a room lined entirely in rubber.
Mr F, a retired engineer who used to work for the construction companyZehnter, was said by police to have been continuously renovating andextending the hidden cellar. Detectives say they have not ruled out findingfurther secret rooms underneath the sprawling villa.
All seven children were born in the cellar, police say, but within months oftheir births they were divided between the dark and the light. As babiesaged between nine and 15 months, three of them were adopted and raised bytheir grandparents, leading normal lives - attending school and playing inthe swimming pool in the gardens of the villa.
The babies were claimed to have been discovered on the doorstep of the villabetween 1993 and 1997. Each baby was left with a note supposedly written bytheir missing mother Elisabeth, whom the authorities believed had probablyjoined an extreme and isolated religious sect.

Mr and Mrs F have four children besides Elisabeth, all of whom now havefamilies of their own. Mr F is said by police to have presided over allfamily matters with an iron hand.
Guenther Platter, the Austrian Interior Minister, said: "We are beingconfronted with an unfathomable crime. Everything that has happened heregoes beyond one's imagination."

Austria's Fritzl to be tried on March 16
VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children by her, will go on trial on March 16 on charges including murder, an Austrian court said on Thursday.

The trial, most of which will be closed to the public and the media to protect the victims, is scheduled to last for one week, said Franz Cutka, spokesman for the regional court of St Poelten, west of the capital Vienna.

Fritzl, 73, has been charged by prosecutors with the murder of one of his daughter's children who died shortly after birth. He is also charged with rape, enslavement, incest, coercion and deprivation of liberty.

His lawyer, Rudolf Mayer, said last year that Fritzl would not appeal against the charge sheet.
Fritzl, in investigative custody since the case was exposed in April last year, kept daughter Elisabeth in a soundproofed basement under his house in the central Austrian town of Amstetten.

A psychiatric report commissioned by justice authorities last year declared Fritzl to be mentally fit for a trial. He faces life imprisonment if convicted of murder.

Dalam perbicaraan yang diadakan di sebuah mahkamah di sini, Fritzl yang menutup mukanya dengan fail biru, hanya mengaku sebahagian tuduhan merogol dan melakukan paksaan, berdepan hukuman penjara seumur hidup jika sabit kesalahan atas dakwaan menyebabkan kematian.
