Nipah not a virus to worry about
KUALA LUMPUR: Of the 649 cases of viral encepahlitis reported in the last eight years, there has been no trace of the dreaded Nipah virus.
Two-hundred and eighty-five of the 649 cases were identified as Japanese Encepahlitis after their specimens were tested by the Institute of Medical Research (IMR), said Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai.
According to IMR, there were 37 deaths from viral encepahlitis from the year 2000 to 2008.
Liow said the Government had taken a multi-pronged approach after the Nipah virus outbreak in 1998 which had resulted in 112 deaths.
More public health specialists were trained, an early warning system was devised to identify virus epidemics, and a thorough surveillance and monitoring system was established in the ministry, he said
