Assalamualaikum,

terima kasih

Jangan berurut.  Ni masalah tulang.  You must see an orthopaedic surgeon.  Usual treatment is surgery.

Biasanya, bunion ni terjadi kat orang yang suka pakai high heels.  Macam mana you boleh dapat bunions?

ini yang saya dapat dari internet..sama-sama la kita kongsi..

Bunions

Bunions, referred to in the medical community as Hallux Valgus, are one of the most common forefoot problems. A bunion is a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint. This bump is actually a bone protruding towards the inside of the foot. With the continued movement of the big toe towards the smaller toes, it is common to find the big toe resting under or over the second toe.

This causes a common forefoot condition called overlapping toes. Some of the symptoms of bunions include inflammation, swelling, and soreness on the side surface of the big toe. The discomfort commonly causes a patient to walk improperly.

Another type of bunion which some individuals experience is called a Tailor's Bunion, also known as a Bunionette. This forms on the outside of the foot towards the joint at the little toe. It is a smaller bump that forms due to the little toe moving inwards, towards the big toe.

Bunions are a common problem experienced mostly by women. The deformity can develop from an abnormality in foot function, or arthritis, but is more commonly caused by wearing improper fitting footwear.

Tight, narrow dress shoes with a constrictive toe box (toe area) can cause the foot to begin to take the shape of the shoe, leading to the formation of a bunion. Women who have bunions normally wear dress shoes that are too small for their feet. Their toes are squeezed together in their shoes causing the first metatarsal bone to protrude on the side of the foot.

It is important for men and women to realize that wearing dress shoes and boots, which are tapered in the toe area, can cause the bunion to worsen to the point where surgery is necessary.

In the early stages of the formation of a bunion, soaking feet in warm water can provide temporary relief. The best way to alleviate the pain associated with bunions is to wear properly fitting shoes. Shoes designed with a high, wide toe box (toe area) are recommended for people suffering from forefoot disorders, such as bunions. Shoes with rocker soles will unload pressure to the bunion area. Orthotics are also recommended for this condition to provide extra comfort, support, and protection.

Other conservative treatments include using forefoot products designed to accommodate and relieve bunions such as bunion shields, bunion night splints, and bunion bandages. These conservative treatments can limit the progression of the bunion formation, relieve pain and provide a healthy environment for the foot.

What are symptoms of a bunion?

Bunions may or may not cause symptoms. A frequent symptom is pain in the involved area when walking or wearing shoes that is relieved by resting. A bunion causes enlargement of the base of the big toe and is usually associated with positioning of the big toe toward the smaller toes. This leads to intermittent or chronic pain at the base of the big toe.

Bunions that cause marked pain are often associated with swelling of the soft tissues, redness, and local tenderness.

How is a bunion diagnosed?

The doctor considers a bunion when noting the symptoms described above. The anatomy of the foot is assessed during the examination. Radiographs (x-ray films) of the foot can be helpful to determine the integrity of the joints of the foot and to screen for underlying conditions, such as arthritis or gout. X-ray films are an excellent method of calculating the alignment of the toes.

How are bunions treated?

Simply resting the foot by avoiding excessive walking and wearing loose (wider) shoes or sandals can often relieve the irritating pain of bunions. Walking shoes may have some advantages, for example, over high-heeled styles that tug the big toe outward.

Anti-inflammation medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, can help to ease inflammation as well as pain. Local cold pack application is sometimes helpful as well.

To reduce tension on the inner part of the joint of a bunion, stretching exercises are sometimes given. A bunion splint, usually worn at night, can provide further relief. Depending on the structure of the foot, custom insoles might add further support and repositioning.

Inflammation of the joint at the base of the big toe can often be relieved by a local injection of cortisone.
Any signs of skin breakdown or infection can require antibiotics.

When the measures above are effective in relieving symptoms, patients should avoid irritating the bunion again by optimizing footwear and foot care.

For those whose bunions cause persisting pain, a surgical operation is considered. Surgical procedures can correct deformity and relieve pain leading to improved function. These procedures typically involve removing the bony growth of the bunion while realigning the big toe. Surgery is often, but not always, successful, and failure to relieve pain can result from the big toe moving back to its deviated position before the operation. Proper footwear and activity restrictions can reduce the chances of surgical failure.

Bunions At A Glance

  • Bunions involve enlargement and repositioning of joints at the ball of the foot.
  • Bunions most commonly affect women.
  • Bunions may or may not cause symptoms.
  • Treatment of bunions can include rest, alteration of footwear, foot supports, medications, and/or surgery.

nak sambung sembang pasal bunion ni..saya pun salah sorang dari keturunan 'bunion' nih...mak saya ada dan dah teruk, sampai ibu kaki dia lending kat jari sebelah. nak sarung selipar skit punya susah..alignment dah jadi tak betul saya pun maikn teruk. kalau tak sakit tak pa tapi lately ni malam-malam rasa sengal2 dan berdenyut-denyut. dah dua tiga kali buat appointment dgn specialist di ampang puteri tapi asik pospon sebab takut..kot2 dah dihiris tulang tu timbul sakit lain plak...or kena infection n macam2..tapi time sengal malam2 rasa cam jam tu gak nak gi remove..dah baca dua tiga article kat internet, majority mat saleh dah buat surgery to removw their bunion n dia org memang recommend pegi buang...dilema saya sekarang itu lah...nak remove ke let it be...........................

ni ada komen berkenaan pengalaman buang bunion:
Comment from: no_bone, 55-64 Female (Patient)

I had bunions on both feet, and the surgeon decided to remove them both. It was a day surgery, and with 10 staples on the left foot, and 11 on the right, I was wheel-chaired from the hospital to the car, and was given a pain prescription. The pain was unbearable for the first four days. The pills made me sleep for about an hour, but I had to deal with the pain for three. The fourth day, I was able to walk about - gingerly, and had a "sit shower" with my feet on a stool. Thank goodness for hand held showers! I kept my feet elevated, and had an ice pack on them continuously. After the first week, the wrapping (no cast) came off, new dressings applied, but the staples remained as the incision was still damp. From then on, I changed my dressings daily, applying a bit of polysporin to each side of the incision, and the pain pills were a thing of the past. At the end of the second week, the staples were removed, and I was walking very well. But still had to keep the incisions dry, which I did, and continued the "sit shower" apply ointment and clean dressings. Exactly one month to the day, all the scabbing had come off, but there is still some bruising, and numbness around the incision. I still exercise my toes and it has been over a month and a half. So, except for the first four days of pain, it really hasn’t been that bad.

Comment from: neecee1, 19-24 Female (Patient)

I am currently recovering from my second bunion procedure. I have had bunions since I was little, possibly around 6, and dealt with them throughout my teenage years. I've been embarrassed, been to doctors, and dealt with pain. They were pretty severe. So, finally at 19, I had surgery on my left and right foot. Wow, did they look better! There was less pain, and the recovery is nothing and worth it for having a better foot in return. It's been three years, and they slowly crept back. Recently, I went on to schedule two more surgeries, and the process of better feet and no pain will be on its way. The first surgery was more extensive; the second time around it was just a little cleaning up and moving bones around. Oh, and if you have hammer toes, get them taken care of at the same time; the recovery is the same. I am scheduling my final foot surgery for March. However, this time I will be smarter. My advice: Go for the surgery, (insurance usually covers it if there is pain involved) and get orthotics after to prevent them from coming back. This time I am getting the orthotics and protecting my bunions from returning.

We all fear surgeries.  Of the unknowns.   Reading other people's experiences doesn't come close to what we experience ourself.

I had a foot surgery last year.  Was it painful? Yes.  Do I regret having it done? No.

Its either live the rest of my life in pain and have early onset of arthritis or have it resolved through bone surgery.  I chose the surgery.

Choose your surgeon carefully.  Get second or third opinions.  I went to 3 different private hospitals and a govt hospital before deciding on my surgeon.

All the best Kimora & Maksubita.  InsyAllah your surgeries will go smoothly.

Take good care of your health from now.  After the surgery make sure you both eat the necessary supplements to encourage speedy healing.

Jangan lupa stock up air gamat, jeli gamat, pati ikan haruan, vitamins C & E.  Pati ikan haruan especially very good untuk cepat keringkan luka pembedahan.

anita, the arthtritis..was it related to your bunion? or caused by the bunion? u mean the pain that am experiencing now is due to arthritis? not because of the deformity?
