French Open - Men's runners and riders

(Prefix number denotes ranking):
1-Rafael Nadal(pictured, Spain): The four-times champion has the ability to flattenopponents with his fearsome forehand groundstrokes. A supreme athlete,he employs speed and an aggressive approach to win through. As forweaknesses, he does not understand the meaning of the word.

2-Roger Federer(Switzerland): An exquisite squash-style shot he conjured up at the2006 French Open sums up the talent of the man. Might have overcome amental block against Nadal by beating the Spaniard in Madrid lastSunday - snapping a five-match losing streak. But memories of his 2008final mauling may come back to haunt him.

3-Andy Murray(Britain): As well as being a supreme tactician, he trips up manyopponents with his excellent court coverage. Despite honing his skillson clay at the Sanchez-Casal academy in Barcelona during his teenageyears, red dirt remains his weakest surface and he would do well toreach the second week for the first time.

4-Novak Djokovic(Serbia): Boasts an attractive all-court game with his backhand beinghis strongest weapon. His fitness, though, has been called intoquestion time and again as he has quit mid-match four times in 17 grandslam tournaments.

5-Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina): Canadapt to playing on many different surfaces as he proved by winningback-to-back titles on clay and hardcourt in 2008. His swift coveragearound the court helps him to run opponents ragged.

6-Andy Roddick(US): His thunderbolt serve is no longer the weapon it once was and onclay it fails to do much damage. With four opening-round losses, twosecond-round showings and a solitary visit to the third round, Roddickhas probably already booked his flight out of Paris.

7-Gilles Simon(France): After a consistent start to the season on hard courts, hisdouble-handed backhand has failed to pay dividends on theenergy-sapping clay. As the highest ranked home player, he will beunder the spotlight as France looks for its first men's champion since Yannick Noah in 1983.

8-Fernando Verdasco(Spain): Spain's Davis Cup hero has an ominous forehand and has provedto be a supreme athlete after keeping Nadal on court for more than fivehours in a battle of wills and stamina in the Australian Opensemi-finals. The gifted left-hander has the game to reach the secondweek for the first time.

French Open - Women's runners and riders

(Prefix number denotes ranking)
1-Dinara Safina(pictured, Russia): Like her brother Marat, she has a habit ofdestroying rackets when the going gets tough. But has an indomitablespirit which is tough to crack. Saved match points in successivematches en route to the 2008 final and back-to-back triumphs in Romeand Madrid prove she will be the one to beat.

2-SerenaWilliams (US): Immensely powerful off both flanks and with a serve likea mule's kick, Serena is extremely fast around the court and does notreally have a weak point. But question marks hang over her form as shehas not won a single match on clay this season.

3-VenusWilliams (US): Taller and less muscular than her younger sister, Venuspossesses a serve that would do her proud on the men's tour. Hertwo-handed backhand is one of her outstanding assets but her record atRoland Garros is nothing to write home about.

4-ElenaDementieva (Russia): A consistent baseliner who was often undone by herpoor service action, although she has dramatically improved in thatdepartment over the past two years. Prone to lapses in concentrationbut plays with great power from the back.

5-Jelena Jankovic(Serbia): Her two-handed backhand down the line is her master strokebut her recurrent fitness and injury problems could pose problems forher on the energy-sapping surface.

7-Svetlana Kuznetsova(Russia): Although she has no major weaknesses, the 2004 US Openchampion lacks the sparkle that could take her to the next level. Hergreat speed on court and her forehand - with a lot of topspin - are hermajor assets.

8-Ana Ivanovic (Serbia) - Very aggressive fromthe baseline, the defending champion is always looking for a winner, especially with a powerful flat forehand. She has struggled to do wellsince her triumph 12 months ago and sometimes lacks mental strength andneeds to improve her first-serve percentage. Coming off a knee injury.

16-AmelieMauresmo (France): Arguably has the best single-handed backhand on thetour, she seems to be running into form in the nick of time and climbedback into the top 20 by reaching the Madrid semi-finals. A possiblesurprise at Roland Garros, where she will have much less pressure than usual.
