KUCHING: The city will host the first state-level Malaysia Day celebration at Stadium Perpaduan (indoor stadium) on Sept 16 starting 7pm.

An elaborate programme has been lined up comprising speeches, presentation of a special documentary on Malaysia Day, raising of the Jalur Gemilang and colourful performances by the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry (KPSU).
Two top Malaysian artistes, Faizal Tahir and Adibah Noor, will be performing.
Minister-in-charge of the celebration Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said the event would be the best way to ensure the people, the younger generation in particular, are aware of the significance of Malaysia.
“For most people born after 1963, they will not know much about the formation of Malaysia and as such, the hosting of this event will raise their awareness on the significance of Malaysia Day, the day when Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore came together to form the Federation of Malaysia,” he said.
Mawan, who is Social Development and Urbanisation Minister, said this when chairing the first main organising committee meeting on Thursday.
He added that Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhamad Salahuddin and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud would be guests of honour for the celebration.
Mawan called on the people to join hands and show their pride in celebrating Malaysia birthday.
As Sept 16 has been designated a national public holiday from this year, he said the people should come in full force to support of this historical event.
“The evening’s programme would contain some surprising elements to enthral the large crowd expected. It would be the one for the people to cherish,” he added.
Among those present at the meeting were Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, Deputy State Secretary Datu Ose Murang, Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation permanent secretary Soedirman Aini as well as Public Relations and Corporate Affairs director Bakrie Zaini.

Malaysia Day joy in Kuching
September 16, 2010
KUCHING, Sept 16 — The Stadium Perpaduan here was transformed into a sea of flags with the Jalur Gemilang flying high in the spirit of unity and national integration at a ceremony to mark the state-level Malaysia Day, here this evening.
About 5,000 people thronged the event venue to watch the colourful presentations and cultural performances.
Four hundred performers, including students and dancers from the Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry, in their resplendent traditional costumes added colour to the event themed ‘1Malaysia: Menjana Transformasi”.
The highlight was the 10-minute Malaysia Day documentary titled “Liku-liku Pembentukan Malaysia” on Sarawak’s journey to the formation of Malaysia.
The celebration started with a special dance to welcome the guest including Sarawak Head of State, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Barieng and wife, Toh Puan Norkiah, and Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who represented Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Also present were members of the state cabinet, community leaders and heads of departments.
Members of the Royal Malaysian Navy raised the Jalur Gemilang to mark the state-level Malaysia Day celebration.
The performances include a poetry recital and traditional and contemporary dances named “Malaysia Harapan Bersama”.
Singer-songwriter and television personality Faizal Tahir and singer-actress Adibah Noor thrilled the crowd with their repertoire of songs.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Dr Chan said the declaring of public holiday was a recognition of the critical role played by Sabah and Sarawak in the formation of Malaysia. — Bernama |
