SpaceX's latest Starship rocket launch ended in dramatic fashion when it blew to pieces and sent fiery debris falling over Florida and the Bahamas yesterday.
The colossal spacecraft lost contact and disintegrated minutes into its test flight, dashing founder Elon Musk’s hopes of a successful mission.
Launching from Texas, the 403-foot (123-meter) rocket saw its first-stage booster safely caught by giant mechanical arms back at the pad.
However, as it soared eastward towards its planned controlled descent over the Indian Ocean, engines on the upper spacecraft began to fail.
Less than ten minutes into the journey, communication was cut as the Starship spun out of control. It reached an altitude of nearly 90 miles (150 kilometers) before the incident occurred, preventing the deployment of four mock satellites.
SpaceX later confirmed that the craft underwent "a rapid unscheduled disassembly" during the ascent engine firing, and promptly notified safety officials.
Orlando International Airport briefly suspended flights "due to space launch debris in the area," as announced on X. Now new pictures have revealed the heart-stopping moment when the craft exploded and left a fiery trail across the sky.
