LOCAL controversial rapper, Namewee is all set to add a little spice in September with his big screen debut Nasi Lemak 2.0.
Seeking the help of well-known personalities in Malaysia's entertainment scene including Adibah Noor, Afdlin Shauki, Datuk David Arumugam, Reshmonu and Pete Teo in this project, the multi-lingual production is a tribute to Malaysians every where.
While things are running smooth now, the whole process wasn't a walk in the park for Namewee, who decided to embark on this project more than two years ago.
When the controversial figure sought support from parties, including the government with the idea, he was met with many rejections and false-starts.
The comedy revolves around a chef seeking his identity as he makes nasi lemak. The movie will be released on Sept 8 in conjunction with the National Day celebrations on Aug 31.
Due to controversial issues faced by Namewee last September, the initial plan to complete Nasi Lemak 2.0 for 2010 came to a complete halt when the sponsors and inves tors decided to pull out from the project.
Not one to call it quits, Namewee and his company Prodigee Media never gave up, as the entire experience made them stronger as he held on to his 'Malaysia Boleh' spirit.
Now the film is finally com pete and Namewee is happy to share his muhibbah film to Malaysians of all walks of life.
"Not until the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, officially announced Namewee's inno cence in Parliament building at end of last year, we were able to revive the project again in 2011," said Fred Chong, the executive producer of the film.
After presenting his film trailer to Nazri with an explana tion of his intention for the story, he gave Namewee full support, including an official letter endorsing the film as a 1Malaysia film.
"Initially, I faced some mental blocks trying to fill in the miss ing pieces of my story, but after knowing that these Malaysian superstars had agreed to sup port my film, I quickly complet ed the script after researching into their strong personalities," said Namewee, or Wee Meng Chee.
Hailing from Muar with a Nyonya grandmother, Namewee also knows a lot about sambal and nasi lemak.
Not only a favourite meal for Malaysians regardless of race, it is also the main 'protagonist' in Namewee's latest creative endeavour.
"Using nasi lemak as a meta phor, with the Baba and Nyonya community contributing the sambal, Indians the curry and Malays the lemak, it is a combi nation of efforts that makes it a well-loved meal," said Fred.
With a film budget of barely RM1 million, the movie will mostly be in Mandarin and Cantonese but also features Bahasa Malaysia, English, Tamil, Japanese and other Chinese dialects.
With a myriad of characters in the film, Nasi Lemak 2.0 is bound to be a unique produc tion that encapsulates being Malaysian, from the dialogue to songs.
Among personalities to watch out for is singer-song writer Reshmonu, who is mak ing his acting debut in this film, with two roles.
"I have been offered scripts before but this is my first movie. I decided to be a part of Namewee's film because it has a twist to it," said Reshmonu.
Other personalities in the production are Nur Fathia, Nadine Ann Thomas, Ho Yuhang, Dian Sharlin and Felixia Yap.
The production will also be going on a nationwide tour in September at shopping malls in the Klang Valley, Penang, Malacca, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak to promote the film.
