Cop clings to speeding bus' windscreen wipers

By STAFF REPORTER
Published: 13th April 2012
A TRAFFIC cop clings desperately to the windscreen wipers of a speeding bus — after the driver decided to make a run for it.

Police officer Nguyen Manh Phan had pulled the 39-seat bus over because it was driving in the oncoming lane.

But when he asked driver Phung Hong Phuong to produce his documents, the 37-year-old leapt back into his cab, started the engine and started to pull away.

Determined not to let the rogue driver escape, Lt Phan jumped on to the bus’ grille and clung to the wipers for dear life as it sped for nearly a MILE.

The incredible scene, like something from an action movie, was captured on camera by another driver in Hanoi, Vietnam.

When Phuong eventually stopped, angry witnesses tried to grab him and beat him up — but were held back by Lt Phan, despite his hair-raising experience.

The driver later admitted he was afraid of being fined for the traffic violation because he was once convicted of causing death by dangerous driving, and served a four-year jail term until 2010.

Phuong now faces a charge of “acting against public officials”.
