Mexico, 1970

The term 'group of death' first used in 1970. The term 'group of death' was used by the Mexican press to describe Group 3 of World Cup 1970, which consisted of England (reigning champions), Brazil (champions in 1958 & 1962), Czechoslovakia (finalists 1962) and Rumania. As a result, Rumania & Czechoslovakia 'died' in the first round while Brazil won all the matches and became champions.

The red and yellow card system was first used in the 1970 finals, though no players were sent-off in that finals. Only yellow cards were shown in the 1970 finals. The first player to receive a yellow card was Lovchev of the USSR in the 1970 opening match against Mexico on 31 May 1970.

Germany, 1974

The first red card was given to Carlos Caszely of Chile on 14 June 1974.

Argentina, 1978

The first country to withdraw from the World Cup due to the inability to pay the entrance fee was Sri Lanka which withdrew from the 1978 World Cup.

Italy, 1990

In the 1990 Semi-Final between Italy and Argentina, absent-minded referee referee Michael Vautrot from France added 8 minutes of injury time to the first half of extra-time as he forgot about the time. :lol Fortunately no goal was scored during the 40 minutes of extra-time. Argentina won 4-3 on penalty shoot-out.

USA, 1994

German midfielder Stefan Effenberg sent home early by coach Berti Vogts in USA 1994 after he gave the finger to a fan during a finals match. Stefan Effenberg was sent home immediately after the incident, and has refused to rejoin the national squad since.

Colombian player Andreas Escobar was killed by a soccer fan soon after he returned home from USA 94. Colombia were one of the favourites, and their early exit shocked the Colombian people. Escobar scored a clear own goal in their loss to USA in a crucial First Round game on 22/6/94. Two weeks later, he was shot dead by an angry fan in his home town. The killer Humberto Munoz was sentenced to jail for 43 years, but was released on 6 October 2005 after serving just 11 years.

The first Final decided on penalty shoot-out was the 1994 Final in which Brazil beat Italy 3:2  on penalty shoot-out after the match finished in a 0:0 tie.

Situasi Papua Gawat....

Ini sungguh kejadian yang sangat menjengkelkan. Sebentuk pelecehan.
Siapapun terusik. Bendera Belanda pekan lalu berkibar di salahsatu
gunung di pegunungan Jaya Wijaya. Campur tangan asing makin kentara.
Sekjen Dewan Papua Thaha Al Hamid menceritakan semalam. Berkibarnya
bendera Belanda tentu membuat aparat polisi meradang. Maka satu peleton
polisi diback-up kekuatan gabungan Yonif 753 pun dikirim ke sana. Mereka
mendaki, merayap, siaga penuh. Sambil mengendap-endap, senjata laras
panjang pun mulai terkokang. Sang komandan sesekali berkomunikasi
melalui HT.

Dalam jarak 100 meter mereka mengepung rumah itu. Semuanya siaga penuh.
Wajar saja. Mereka geram, karena tidak hanya bendera OPM yang sering
berkibar di sana. Kini malah bendera Belanda.

Papua memang ibarat kubangan tambang emas. Baik Amerika maupun Uni Eropa
semua berebut menambang kekayaan alam di sana. Diam-diam, perang
kepentingan sudah berkecamuk keras. Meski sebenarnya pemerintah
Indonesia masih adem-ayem saja.

Lima polisi kemudian menggebrak rumah itu. Para penghuni histeris.
Abraham Komboi, pemilik rumah, meski dikepung dua peleton polisi tetap
tenang saja. Ia yang berprofesi penginjil tentu tahu
bagaimana bersikap. Katanya,"Ada apa ini??!!"

Polisi menyahut,"Anda mengibarkan bendera Belanda. Anda kami tangkap.
Ayo ke markas." Seorang polisi menarik keras Abraham. Tapi tangan kekar
Abraham menampiknya. Ia tidak kalah galaknya. Katanya,"Bapak ini kurang
kerjaan. Saya memang mengibarkan bendera Belanda. Karena saya
pendukung kesebelasan Belanda, tapi lihat tuh..." John menunjuk rumah
kepala suku yang berjarak 200 meter ke arah bawah. "Itu bendera Brasil
berkibar...." tambahnya.

Polisi tahu dirinya keliru langsung beringsut mundur, "Waduhh...Maafkan
kami. Kami kira ada campur tangan asing." Sambil merahpadam malu mereka
balik kanan, sebagian sambil cekikikan,
"Bubar....bubar...". Ada yang berguman geram,"Cukaminya...!"

Brazil won the world cup in 1994. Before that, he had won this title for the last time in 1970.

If you add up: 1970 + 1994 = 3964

Argentina won the world cup for the last time in 1986. Before that only in 1978.

And 1978 + 1986 = 3964

Germany, though, won the world cup in 1990. Before that, Germany won in 1974.

Look: 1990 + 1974 = 3964

This could lead us to guess the winner of the World Cup in 2002, since it should be the winner

of the 1962 World Cup (In fact 3964 - 2002 = 1962).

And Brazil won the world cup in 1962! (And, in fact, Brazil won the 2002 WC)

This numerology seems to work...

And now, who would be the winner of the 2006 world cup?

Let's see, 3964 - 2006 = 1958

And who won in 1958?....

Oh, Brazil did!!!
