Low-cut jeans offer glimpse of bellybuttons -- and more
Bellybuttons, bellybuttons, bellybuttons.
Just about everywhere you go nowadays, you'll see young girls wearing jeans that're hanging so low you'd expect to see tufts of hair -- you certainly cop eyefuls of bellybuttons, according to Shukan Post (5/25).
"Low lines are made with a tiny crotch. They're not hanging down," 17-year-old Mayumi says with a laugh.
Low-line jeans appear to be the biggest fashion boom for the summer, Shukan Post says.
"Low lines started with Mariah Carey and hip-hop musicians overseas," a reporter for a women's fashion magazine says. "[Singer] Ayumi Hamazaki started the trend in Japan. Recently, actresses like Ryoko Hirosue and Ryoko Yonekura have been wearing them. Office ladies and young wives love 'em."
But with jeans hanging so low, Shukan Post ponders, aren't the wearers worried they'll let slip a glimpse of their panties or pubes?
"They slim the waist down and make you look healthy. People take notice of you if you wear them in the streets and that's great. I don't do anything about the hairs," says Mika, also 17. "But if you get to see the hairs? Hey, that's a treat!"
Shukan Post says schoolgirls have brought about some of the biggest fashion booms in recent times -- remember loose socks and platform shoes? -- and it seems their first fad for the 21st century is showing off their bellybuttons. |
