Quake off Indon isle, no tsunami threat yet
PETALING JAYA: The Meteorological Department said a strong earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter scale occurred at 1.40pm Thursday on the Northern Molucca Sea off the Indonesian island of Maluku.
The epicentre of the earthquake was 1,054 km southeast of Lahad Datu in Sabah.
"There is a small possibility of tsunami occurring at the epicentre," the department said, adding that no evacuation is required however.
"As a precaution, the public is advised to stay away from the beach areas in southeastern Sabah until further notice," it said.
Indonesian meteorological officials first issued a tsunami warning for islands in the area, but rescinded it at 2.30pm until further notice. |
