As many things, including mobile phones, go 'bling' in their attempt to exude a sense of luxury, will Nokia's emphasis on elegant yet functional designs still garner it a steadfast following? Prasanna Raman looks at the latest Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte to find out.

[table=200][/table]MOBILE phones have evolved tremendously over the years, changing in size, design and material.

Following dynamic consumer habits and preferences, phone manufacturers are continuously creating new designs to keep up. And in the past few years, as hot couture started going mainstream, some mobile phone manufacturers even teamed up with fashion designers to create phones labelled as premium or high-end products.

These were their limited edition offerings to discreet buyers who relished in exclusivity.

Motorola抯 Dolce & Gabbana or LG抯 Prada are some examples.
Mobile phone giant Nokia, on the other hand, has kept the bling factor at arm抯 length, revelling instead in elegance via minimalistic designs.

Minimal, however, is not to be confused with lacking, as lacking is not something that the world抯 most recognised and leading mobile phone brand is known for.

This Finnish giant makes its new products under a distinct design philosophy.

Design, according to the company, is about more than just style. Design, it espouses, has to deliver objects that are not only beautiful to look at but also work just the way people want them to.
