By now, everyone has seen the official Paramount Pictures press release announcing the start of production on the next Star Trek feature. It noted the familiar names: John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller, as well as J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, plus composer Michael Giacchino.
But it also included a host of other names that may not be as familiar to people: Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Paul Schwake, Dan Mindel, Scott Chambliss, Maryann Brandon, Mary Jo Markey and Michael Kaplan. Today, we’re going to take a few minutes to introduce you to these less-familiar figures who will play large roles in helping the Star Trek (2009) sequel reach theaters on May 17, 2013.
Chernov, Ellison, Goldberg and Schwake are executive producers, and they all worked on the current blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Chernov has served as a producer, production manager, production executive, first assistant director and more over his long career, and he counts among his credits Richard Pryor: Live in Concert, The Thing, Starman, Reign of Fire, Balls of Fury, Tangled, Battle: Los Angeles and Star Trek (2009). His kids, Zoe and Max, appeared as two of young Spock’s classmates in Star Trek (2009).
Ellison, Goldberg and Schwake head up Skydance Productions, a Paramount production partner on what Paramount refers to officially as Untitled Star Trek Sequel, as well as on True Grit. Ellison, who also occasionally acts, is the company’s founder and CEO. He is the son of Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison. Goldberg, Skydance’s president of production, previously executive produced Taking Lives, Happy Feet, I Am Legend, Get Smart and Yes Man, and, in her capacity as president of production at Village Roadshow Pictures, worked on the Matrix trilogy, Training Day and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, among other titles. Schwake, COO and CFO at Skydance, counts among his credits Grandma’s Boys and Rendition, and, during his time at Spyglass Entertainment and Morgan Creek, was involved with The Sixth Sense, Seabiscuit, Last of the Mohicans and True Romance, among other films.
Dan Mindel, director of photography on Star Trek (2009), will assume that same job on the sequel. His credits include Enemy of the State, Spy Game, Domino, Mission: Impossible III and the upcoming films John Carter and Savages. Scott Chambliss is a longtime Abrams associate, having been production designer on Felicity, Alias, Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek (2009). His non-Abrams projects include I Like It Like That, Salt and Cowboys & Aliens.
Additional Star Trek (2009)/Abrams returnees include editors Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey, as well as costume designer Michael Kaplan. Brandon’s other credits include Grumpier Old Men, Alias, Mission: Impossible III, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Super 8, while Markey’s include Medicine Man, Felicity, Alias, Mission: Impossible III, Lost, Killers, Undercovers, Super 8 and the upcoming Perks of Being a Wallflower. Finally, Kaplan previously designed costumes for Blade Runner, Flashdance, Seven, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, I Am Legend, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Burlesque and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, among many other |

Saldana ( our beloved UHURA)Talks Trek Sequel
By StarTrek.com Staff
January 30, 2012

Zoe Saldana beamed into Park City, Utah, last week to promote her latest movie, The Words, and, the Star Trek sequel inevitably came up in just about every interview she conducted. That makes perfect sense, of course, as Saldana had to briefly leave Los Angeles, where she’s shooting the Star Trek sequel, in which she reprises her role as Uhura, in order to chat up The Words.
Speaking to New York Magazine, the actress acknowledged that she was getting antsy about the long time between Enterprise adventures, but understood that J.J. Abrams wasn’t going to move forward until the story and everything else had fallen into place. “I kind of was, yeah,” she said. “The film came out in 2009, we shot it in '07, and now it's 2012. So yeah, around last year, I was like, "Come on, come on already," because I had such a wonderful time working with J.J. and the cast and doing science fiction, which is my biggest passion and my preference as an audience and as a reader, too. But when you're around J.J. and you're around (Avatar director) Jim Cameron, you sense that there's this absolute consciousness that if they don't focus on the quality of what they do, then their formula's not going to work. That's the one thing they have in common; they're amazing storytellers, so J.J. probably would have fought for the time that he needed for the sequel.”
Asked if fans can expect more “close encounters” between her Uhura and Zachary Quinto’s Spock, Saldana replied, “All I'm going to say is, if you put all the time and energy and wit into setting these two characters together in the first movie and didn't follow through, it would be a shame.” Saldana then wondered aloud if she’d given away too much, saying, “I feel like J.J. is going to pop up out of the corner and say, ‘Come with me, Zoe |

Spocks In The News
By StarTrek.com Staff
January 26, 2012
Spocks are in the news. Yes, you read that right: Spocks.
Zachary Quinto has been making the awards show rounds on behalf of his film Margin Call, which he starred in and co-produced, and which just received an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category. E! caught up with him the other day at the Producers Guild Awards in Beverly Hills and got him to talk about the sequel to Star Trek (2009) for a few moments. "It's been really great," he said. "We've been shooting for a week and a half, and it's been an incredible return to that world." And, speaking of his new co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Weller and Alice Eve, Quinto stated, "All of them have folded in so beautifully and brought a whole new level of intelligence and sensitivity."
As for the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy tweeted the following message this morning: “I've been invited to visit the set of the new Star Trek film. Hope to do that next week. LLAP.”
What do you think? Will J.J. Abrams and Quinto convince Nimoy to don Vulcan ears and make a cameo? |
