KUALA LUMPUR: The government is implementing a system for contractors to quote a price for government jobs worth RM500,000 and below, doing away with the time-consuming tender process.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said all projects that fall within the cost range would be awarded based on the quotations offered by contractors.

"This is to speed up implementation of government projects," he said after the monthly Economic Planning Unit meeting.

A circular on the decision was issued yesterday to take effect immediately.

Previously, the quotation system was only available for projects valued at RM200,000 and below, and open only to contractors with Class F licenses.
The new decision increases the quotation system cap by more than two-fold and qualifies Class E contractors.

Najib, who is also finance minister, said the speeding up of contract awards was part of the government's second economic stimulus plan, which he is expected to table in Parliament on March 10.
