KUALA LUMPUR: The Orang Asli Museum located at a remote area in Gombak is not well known, despite its comprehensive array of exhibits.

The Orang Asli Museum is a hidden
treasure trove of information on the
indigenous people of Malaysia.

The museum has hunting tools, music instruments, wood carvings and handicraft, clothing, jewellery and many more items used by the Orang Asli.

It also has information on their cultures and beliefs.

Among the items they use for hunting is the ranjau, a unique trap to catch wild boars. A bamboo blowpipe is employed to smaller prey like monkeys and birds.

In the music instruments section, there is a variety of traditional instruments, like the centung and semarang, which are played in special rituals.

The arts and craft section reflects the creativity of the Orang Asli with exhibits of neatly-woven mengkuang mats, padi baskets and many more.

Due to their isolation from mainstream society, their art has largely escaped the attention of art lovers.

It is also this isolation that has kept the patterns and motifs of their products original and uninfluenced by outside forces.

Their jewellery collection includes bone necklaces which were worn by the women.

According to the museum, the Orang Asli population stands at approximately 141,230.

The Orang Asli are divided into three main tribes -- Negrito, Senoi and Proto-Malays. Each main tribe is then divided into six smaller tribes.

The Semai tribe under the Proto-Malays is the largest with a population of 42,383. They live in Kuala Lipis and Raub in Pahang, as well as Slim River and Kinta in Perak.

The museum was established in 1987 to preserve the history and cultures of the Orang Asli. It was originally an old wooden building that served as the residence of the former director-general of the Orang Asli Affairs Department.

In 1995, a new brick building was built at a cost of RM3.5 million and it was officially declared open on June 19, 1998.

The new museum has facilities like a library and a theatre hall to screen videos on the history of the Orang Asli.

The library has proved to be one of the main attractions, with visitors, mostly academicians on research trips, coming from all over the world.

Its curator, Asmawi Mohd Yunus, hopesc that the museum will see more visitors as it offers a comprehensive history of the Orang Asli as well as rare exhibits.

The museum is open daily from 9am to 5pm except Fridays. For information, call 03-6188 3160 or visit www.jheoa.gov.my.
