Ra.One fails to break Bodyguard's record
It was a movie that was supposed to cement Shah Rukh Khan's [ Images ] place as the undisputed box office king.
Ra.One, Khan's most ambitious project so far, opened in over 3200 screens across the country and was supposed to beat the hell out of Salman Khan's [ Images ] Bodyguard that had opened in 2,800 screens during the Id weekend in August.
By sheer numbers and the publicity overdrive that Shah Rukh khan had gone into, Ra.One seemed set to beat Bodyguard's opening day collection even before it was released.
Trade pundits had predicted that the movie's first-day collections would break all previous box office records and were positive that it would manage to cross the magical Rs 21-crore mark (that Bodyguard had set) making it the top Hindi grosser of all time.
Yet when it did release on October 26, Ra.One struggled, faltered and failed.
Bollywood trade is a slippery business. The handful of trade magazines that publish box-office collections week after week rarely agree upon the exact figures.
Yet according to initial reports it seems safe to say that Ra.One hasn't succeeded in beating Bodyguard's first-day collection at the box office.
Media professional and industry observer Abhijit Mhamunkar says, "The opening day collections of Ra.One are somewhere between Rs 15 and Rs 16 crores. In spite of the ticket prices being increased and the film opening in more screens than ever, the movie doesn't even seem to come close to the first day collections of Bodyguard (Rs 21 crores)."
While Bodyguard had opened in 2,800 screens across India and the first-day occupancy ranged between 85 per cent and 100 per cent, Ra.One opened in around 3200 screens with the first day occupancy ranging between 75 per cent and 80 per cent.
To make things worse, the movie received a mixed response from the critics as well as the initial audience (that can sometimes be crucial in driving the collection). Many from the audience felt that Shah Rukh did not live up to the hype that he created.
Ra.One was also dubbed and released in Tamil and Telugu too but Suriya-Shruthi Haasan starrer Tamil film 7am Arivu and Vijay's Tamil film Velayudham have been preferred over Ra.One.
"The reviews of 7am Arivu and Velayudham have been really positive and people in south India are more eager to watch these films rather than watch a dubbed version of a Hindi movie," Mhamunkar says adding that one will have to wait and watch how the dubbed versions do over the next four days before passing any verdict.
One of the things that was supposed to work in Shah Rukh Khan's favour was the 3D version of his film. According to trade pundits the uniqueness of seeing their superstar in 3D could have driven the collections in smaller towns.
However Khan and his team failed here too as the 3D prints of the movie failed to reach several cinema halls on time.
Till Monday night, it was uncertain whether the 3D release would make it in time as the producers seemed unable to meet the deadline but Shah Rukh had confirmed that they would go ahead with the 3D release on time.
Sunil Punjabi CEO of Cinemax India [ Get Quote ] also confirmed this."There were two problems that happened yesterday. The 3D prints of the movie were not able to reach the tier-2 cities in India till late afternoon because of which we had to cancel around two to three shows in each city. Secondly, the evening collections showed a serious dip since many Hindu families stayed back at home for (Laxmi) puja and festivities. On an average the first day occupancy (in Cinemax theatres) is between 75 to 80 per cent."
Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahta said that the movie points out that the movie may have done better had it released on October 27, a day after Laxmi Puja.
According to him too the movie has collected around Rs 15-16 crore on the first day, which he says is 'stupendous'.
"Ideally the film should have released a day after Laxmi Puja, which is traditionally not good for business since in almost every house the puja takes place in the evening. (So it wasn't surprising to see) the collections take a beating in the evening. Taking into consideration these factors, I feel that the first-day collection has been are stupendous," he says.
He also suggests that 'Although the film may have failed to break the opening day record of Bodyguard, Ra.One has set a new record for Diwali [ Images ] day collections.'
According to Boxofficeindia.com Golmaal-3 (2010) had managed Rs 9 crore, Om Shanti Om [ Images ] (2007) had Rs 6 crores and Golmaal Returns (2008) had manged to collect Rs 5.75 crore on the opening day of Diwali
It remains to be seen however if Shah Rukh Khan will be satisfied with this consolation prize. Unless Don 2 manages to do the unthinkable when it releases on December 23 this year, it is Salman 1, Shah Rukh 0.

Critics' verdict: RA.One gets mixed reviews
SRK's superhero flick RA.One, which released on Diwali, has got mixed responses from film critics. RA.One has been praised for it's special effects but criticised for dance sequences and weak storyline which overshadow the over all superhero experience. Is it worth shelling a few bucks? Here's an
related stories
Mayank Shekhar, Hindustan Times
Rating: **
Mayank Shekhar, our in-house editor's review doesn't give RA.One a thumbs up. "For most parts, this doesn't seem a super-hero movie at all. It's more of a weirdly boiled, Bollywood please all: vaguely soppy romance, Salman-type sasta comedy, narcissistic SRK set piece. Die-hard fans of all three genres are likely to be disappointed. Neither here nor there, everything appears so visibly constructed and all over the place that you can look through the wires, rather than blend in with the experience. The latter may be necessary if you're not playing this film's version, available on Playstation 2," says Shekhar.
"A year of relentless hustling, hype and expectations inevitably numb achievements, whatever they are, into the obvious. You wish to figure if this was worth this much fuss," Shekhar adds.
Rajeev Masand, CNN-IBN
Rating: ** 1/2
Rajeev Masand feels RA.One is ambitious but flawed: "Every time we're drawn into the simplistic but intriguing story of how Ra.One can only be vanquished by the game's superhero G.One (also played by Shah Rukh), director Anubhav Sinha feels the desperate need to inject a dance number or a comical sequence or a melodramatic interlude into the narrative. It's distracting from the superhero theme and more importantly, it makes the film clunky."
Shubhra Gupta, Indian Express
Rating: **
The Express critic doesn't think too highly of the film either: "Can a film which boasts some of the most boggling special effects ever seen in an Indian venture, and a couple of Bollywood’s most jiggly, shapely navels—one male, the other female, one pierced, one not but oh-so-hot—be a slurry sludge? 'Ra.One’ goes one better. It is a superstarry slurry sludge, with just the occasional consolatory sparkle. Shah Rukh Khan’s shout-out to superheroes is a Three Part Something : borrowing from past superhero outings, imbuing them with a worn mix of action-tragedy-comedy-romance, and flattening them into a storyline which seldom manages to escape the clutches of clichéd story-telling."
Raja Sen, Rediff
Rating: * 1/2
"Ra.One is a subpar superhero film with a mediocre soundtrack and occasionally terrific effects. For those of you looking to compare, it's well below Krrish [ Images ] on the superpecking order, and far, far below Robot. The film's narrative, as a result, is disjointed and sluggish, with a mere handful of good scenes. The rest is not just filler, but lengthy, exhausting, filmi filler -- the kind of kitsch a film like this should really have left behind," writes Raja Sen.
Abhishek Mande, Rediff
Rating: **
Mande writes: "RA.One, on the one hand, has special effects that no Hindi movie can boast of so far, but on the other, it is saddled with an almost 1990s-style treatment with songs popping out of nowhere and dialogues that make you cringe. Even as Shah Rukh Khan flies over buildings, jumps over cars and even stops an out-of-control train with his bare hands, his valiant efforts to wow his audiences somewhat fail thanks to a weak storyline, some rather juvenile acting and a poor screenplay."
Taran Adarsh, bollywoodhungama.com
Rating: **** 1/2
The movie critic is all praises for the superhero film and is being criticised for over-rating it: "RA.ONE raises the bar, takes not a step or two, but a giant leap and adheres to international standards, in terms of execution. But the soul, I wish to add, is very desi. That's precisely the reason why RA.ONE emerges trumps. RA.ONE is beauty [read good looking film] with brains [read content]."
Komal Nahta, koimoi.com
Rating: *** 1/2
The critic has praised stars' performances, visual effects and action sequences but feels some portions in the film were boring.. Nahta's verdict: "Ra.One has novelty and great visual effects to see it through at the box-office and ensure profits in spite of its very high cost. Definitely watch Ra.One for the superlative performances and the grand visual effects and the 3D effects."
Kaveree Bamzai, India Today
Rating: *** 1/2
Bazmai has mainly praised the film: "Welcome to a movie as a gigantic open house. Shah Rukh is the host and he will make sure your VFX canapés are delivered at regular interval; your emotion goblet is kept topped up; and there are enough homilies about being careful-what-you-wish-for that you can take home as back presents. This is film-making not so much as noble passion but as grand indulgence, not so much as a marathon magic show but as an event to be managed. No effort is spared."
Nikhat Kazmi, The Times Of India
Raring: *** 1/2
Ra-One works on several accounts. First because it has some interesting clashes betwen G-One, the good robot(Shah Rukh Khan) and Ra-One, the bad robot, who can take the form of anyone he wants. Secondly, the bond that G-One develops with the family he is supposed to protect, Kareena and her young son Prateik, is warm and winsome. The film falls back in the emotional quotient. Also, considering so much money has been poured into the film, the special effects and the hi-tech gadgetry lacks the glitzy feel of Hollywood sci-fi.
INTERNATIONAL REVIEWS
Rachel Saltz, New York Times
NYT reviewer is far from disappointed with RA.One: "Full of digital effects, wire work and things that go flying (cars, men, supermen) the movie is technically as sophisticated as anything Bollywood has produced. A standout is G.One’s rescue of Ms. Kapoor on a runaway train that crashes rather spectacularly out of Victoria Terminus in Mumbai," says Rachel Saltz.
"You can see the money on screen, if not in the screenwriting. The exposition is longwinded and confusing, as are the rules of the game, in the virtual and the real worlds. The bumbling Shekhar is too clownish; Ra.One is a dud demon (Raavan is invoked to little effect) who disappears for chunks of time; and you probably won’t hold your breath as good fights evil," says Saltz.
"But if the storytelling disappoints (shocking!), the film mostly doesn’t. It relies on action and effects and Bollywood’s trump card, star power, to carry the day. This is Mr. Khan’s movie, and once he sheds Shekhar’s droopy locks, he shines as the deadpan, action-hero robot with digital snot and smooth moves on the dance floor, adds the critic.
The Hollywood Reporter
Excerpts from the review: "The film, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is gloriously silly, with stunts, CG animation and music numbers bursting out all over yet its beating heart lies in a commonplace story of a family and most especially a father and son who don’t understand one another. Oscar Hammerstein II once said something to the effect that you have to believe in whiskers on kittens and warm woolen mittens to get away with writing about such corny banalities in a lyric and so Shah -- SRK as he is known to billions of fans -- really does believe in family values and the power of cinema."
"You don’t have to be an enthusiast of Bollywood to embrace RA.ONE, but it sure would help. The “item” numbers and cultural references come fast and furious with little concession to Western audiences unfamiliar with South Asian cinema. But -- sign of our times -- the videogame milieu and computer technology that back up the fantasy will score big with youngsters across the globe. And the stunts and FX work -- the final credit crawl lasts over 10 minutes -- move Indian cinema to a new level of technological expertise."
"During the credit roll, the film makes a point of showing a behind-the-scenes EPK of the stunts and effects, driving home dual points. One is that SRK did, as advertised, his own stunts. And two, that India can compete in the big leagues of stunts and fx. SRK, whose company Red Chilies Entertainment made the film with Eros International, has poured a lot of money into creating his own Mumbai special-effects house and RA.ONE is nothing if not a calling card to the film world."
The Wall Street Journal
Roundup has this as the intro para: "In case you’ve been living high in the Himalayas without access to YouTube, a cellphone, the Internet, or even word of mouth, let us bring you the exciting news that a new Shah Rukh Khan movie, Ra.One, debuted in cinemas on Diwali. This was newsworthy for a number of reasons: A top Bollywood actor seeking a global megahit with effects that would impress Hollywood; probably the most promoted movie ever in India; and a sense that, regardless of whether the critics like the film or not, it is headed for box-office gold."

Overseas reception
Overseas, the film received mostly positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes, a website specializing in consolidating review data, gave the film a 78% rating, certified fresh, while the similar Metacritic gave the film a 60% rating.[125][126] Kirk Honeycutt from The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a favorable review, adding: "India’s first attempt at a superhero movie is both vigorous and emotionally fulfilling within the context of Bollywood traditions." [127] Rubina A. Khan from The First Post praised the film as a whole, stating that "Anubhav Sinha, the director of the film, has done a marvelous job in the action sequences [...] The emotional scenes, too are very engaging — despite all the digital wizardry going on in the film."[128] J. Hurtado of Twitch gave the film a positive review, saying "Ra.One is a stunning action film, with stunts that would hold up with the best of any Hollywood action film. [...] All of the emotion that the film delivers serves the story both in terms of plot development and theme, and it is very seldom gratuitous. [It is] a supremely entertaining action adventure that should be able to cross language lines and find fans in any community."[129] The New York Times featured a news article about the film on the New York edition on next day of its release, highlighting "Ra.One is a kind of entertainment machine set to dazzle, Hindi cinema with a crush on high-tech."[130] The New York Times review, by Rachel Saltz, called out Kahn's acting as a high-point, saying "...once he sheds Shekhar’s droopy locks, he shines as the deadpan, action-hero robot with digital snot and smooth moves on the dance floor" but called the storytelling disappointing.[131] Kevin Thomas of Los Angeles Times said, "Ra.One is Bollywood at its best. It has energy, spectacle and humor, song and dance, but razzle-dazzle special effects and action stunts never overwhelm its story of enduring love that unfolds amid an intricate and inspired sci-fi odyssey".[132] Joe Neumaier from New York Daily News gave the film 4 stars, describing it as "widely entertaining".[133] Andrew O'Hehir from Salon wrote, "From dazzling dance numbers to post-"Matrix" action, "RA. One" showcases Bollywood's confidence."[134]
The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Ra.One 'dis.appoints' [...] there is probably a good chance that you, too, will either have seen this movie already or will see it in the coming days. But at least you’ve been warned".[135] Tamara Baluja of The Globe and Mail gave the film one out of four stars. Although she called the special effects "fantastic", she panned the movie as a whole.[136] Simon Abrams of Slant also gave it one out of four stars and wrote: "Ra.One's indifferently demeaning scenario proves just how meaningless its creators' supposedly good intentions really are."[137] Bloomberg too rated the film with one out of four stars, saying "While no one was expecting The Dark Knight from this film’s makers, they could potentially have matched the entertaining and goofy "Hellboy". Sadly, Khan and director Anubhav Sinha fail to understand the idiom of superhero cinema."[138] Avash Karmacharya of MyRepublica too panned the film's plot and added, "the biggest problem of the movie, however, is the lack of a solid storyline."[139]
Box office
Ra.One saw a record 70-100% occupancy levels all over India, with full houses in many multiplexes. The lesser-than-expected occupancy level was mainly due to the effect of Diwali festivities, which took a toll on the evening shows. The morning opening was described "historic" by several trade analysts.[140][141] Generally, the 3D version of the film saw better occupancy levels than the 2D version.[142] Families and children comprised the major demographics of Ra.One's audience.
On the first day, Ra.One collected 14.63 crore (US$2.97 million) from the Hindi version[143] and an estimated 2 crore (US$405,600) from the Tamil and Telugu versions,[144] taking its all-India total to 16.63 crore (US$3.37 million). It set records for the biggest Diwali opening day ever by beating Golmaal 3 (8.72 crore),[145] The lesser total was attributed to a fall in evening collections, caused due to festive celebrations and pujas. However, on the second day, Ra.One set records throughout the nation by collecting 22.8 crore (US$4.62 million) in the Hindi version and hence surpassing the biggest single-day record in India held by Bodyguard.[146] The third day collection of the film Hindi version netted at 15.50 crore (US$3.14 million), and has again set a record three day collection of 53 crore (US$10.75 million) nett, by surpassing previous record by Bodyguard (52.6 crores). The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film also collected around 4 crore (US$811,200) nett over three days, giving it a total of 57 crore (US$11.56 million) nett for all three languages.[11] The film's Hindi version collected 14.25 crore (US$2.89 million) nett on it's fourth day, with four days collection totaling around 71.50 crore (US$14.5 million) nett.[147] As of five days extended first weekend, the film had collected about 85.50 crore (US$17.34 million) from all it's versions.[148] At the end of seven days, the Hindi Ra.One netted 91.75 crore (US$18.61 million) in India with best collections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu/Kerala and Mysore.[149]
Overseas, Ra.One debuted to a huge $6.75 million overseas. The three-day opening is the fourth biggest ever for a Bollywood film. The film collected US$1.65 million in USA, £910,000 in UK, $250,000 in Pakistan and $1.1 million in UAE, in addition to very strong openings in Singapore and other East Asian countries. Ra.One grossed $28.3 million in India, thus taking the worldwide opening five-day weekend for the film to US$35.05 million.[150][151] In the process, Ra.One became the highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas in 2011 within five days.
