KUCHING: Former Iban tracker Awang Raweng, the only Sarawakian bestowed with the highest British gallantry award – the George Cross – is proud and grateful that the British government still remembers him until today.King George bestowed the 83-year-old veteran from Nanga Skrang, Sri Aman with the George Cross on Nov 20, 1951 in recognition of his bravery in fighting the communists all by himself after he and four other British army personnel were ambushed in Kluang, Johor on May 27, 1951.

At that time Awang was attached to 1st Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment based in Segamat, Johor. On that fateful day Platoon No 10, Delta Company of the regiment, while carrying out routine patrol, was ambushed by about 50 or so communists who were well armed.Recalling the bloody incident, he said he and his colleagues were all injured during the attack.“One of them, Private Hughes, who was behind me was hit below the waist and completely rendered incapable of defending himself; despite the injuries and blood oozing out of my wounds I struggled to defend my colleagues and pulled them to a safer place.“The exchange of gunfire was from 9am to 3pm and only ceased when the communists finally abandoned their positions and retreated after I started to throw hand grenades towards them,” he said.He added that only after the communists fled from the area that the reinforcement troops arrived and they were airlifted and sent to a nearby hospital. For his involvement in that particular operation and his fighting spirit he was bestowed with the George Cross for which he is very thankful to the British government.“I really respect the British government because every two years I would be invited to attend the Queen’s birthday in London. For this, I feel really proud and honoured,” he said in an interview with The Borneo Post here yesterday.

Awang, who had just returned from London for a similar occasion, said all these while he had been invited without fail.He however said that his achievement and contribution to the nation so far was only recognised by the British government but not by the federal and state governments.“For any anniversary and celebration in the country or state I usually am never invited. Sometimes I wonder why and at times I would question the difference between George Cross and Pingat Gagah Berani (PGB),” he said.He said he is not demanding to be respected but added that at least the government or public would give him the kind of treatment he deserves to receive for the sacrifices he has made in guarding the nation and its people. He said from the best of his knowledge George Cross and PGB were almost equivalent but surprisingly when comes to social gatherings he has been left out.The Sarawak Rangers Veterans Association (SRVA) has arranged for Awang to meet with Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan today.“Probably during the meeting tomorrow (today) Awang will have the opportunity to express his feelings,” said SRVA secretary Capt (retired) Mohd Johari Ibrahim who was also at the interview.

His full citation in The London Gazette reads:

AWANG anak RAWANG. Iban Tracker, Johore, Federation of Malaya.

During operations against the bandits in Malaya a section of a platoon of the Worcestersbire Regiment was ambushed by about 50 of the enemy. The leading scout was killed instantly and the Section Commander fatally wounded. Awang anak Rawang was hit through the thigh bone and at the same time a soldier, moving behind him, was hit below the knee, the bullet completely shattering the bone. Awang anak Rawang. although wounded and lying exposed under heavy rifle and automatic fire, collected his own weapons and that of the soldier and dragged him into the cover of the jungle. In view of the impending bandit attack Awaug. completely disregarding his own wound, took up a position to defend the injured man. There he remained, firing on every attempt made by the bandits to approach, and successfully drove off several attacks. Ultimately Awang was again wounded, the bullet shattering his right arm and rendering further use of his rifle or parang impossible. Despite loss of blood from his undressed wounds, be dragged himself over to the wounded soldier and took a grenade from the man
