Beto Kusyairy talks "Balun"

Beto Kusyairy plays the leading man in "Balun".
Last year, Beto Kusyairy made a splash when he appeared in the hit romantic flick "Istanbul Aku Datang" alongside Lisa Surihani. Before this, the 32-year-old actor mostly acted on stage, in television movies and drama series like "Juvana" and "Jangan Ambil Padang Kami". But what few appearances he made in films were definitely memorable, such as his roles in "Nur Kasih The Movie", "Sesuatu Yang Tertinggal", "Chow Kit" and "Jiwa Taiko".
Cinema Online had the chance to visit the star on set for Grand Brilliance's latest film "Balun" at Kamunting in Perak. Bob Singah's directorial feature stars Beto Kusyairy, Datuk Eizlan Yusof, Izara Aishah and Reen Rahim, and is expected to be released this year.
Q: What is so special about your character in "Balun"?
Kusyairy: My character is called Hassan. I have learnt martial arts like Silat Gayung, Culu Simanjakini and Muay Thai before. This time I'll be learning another form of 'silat' called Silat Kundur for the story.
Q: Tell us about your filming experience for "Balun".
Kusyairy: Thank god everything has been going well for me. So far I haven't had any serious injuries but getting bruises is very common. I hope nothing bad happens till the end of the shooting.
Q: What made you take up a role in this film?
Kusyairy: Well, I'm very into action films. If there's a scene for kicking the tables, I'll be the first one to put up my hand. It's my dream to star in an action flick. I have been playing the Romeo type of character in most of my television series. "Balun" gave me a chance to learn local martial arts and realize my dream.
Q: Whom do you idolize in action films, Beto?
Kusyairy: My idols are Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Wesley Snipes, Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais.
Q: Which action superstar has influenced your style in the film?
Kusyairy: [Laugh] I think my style is the combination of Tony Jaa and Jackie Chan. Actually I have been trying to portray my own style and I'm not copying anybody's stunts. To me, martial art is something that comes out from our soul; it appears naturally with our body movement.
Izara Aishah is working with Beto Kusyairy in a movie for the first time.
Q: How's the collaboration with Izara in "Balun"?
Kusyairy: I have no problem working with Izara at all, even though this is the first time we worked together onscreen. We have that chemistry in every scene we are in. She has a lot of potential to excel in this field.
Q: As an actor, do you think "Balun" will do well at the box office?
Kusyairy: Based on the reception for "KL Gangster" and its sequel, I think the action in "Balun" is able to sell, but as an actor, I am only responsible for my acting role. After I finish my job, it is all depends on the audience to support us. I've done my best, so I hope that my performance and the production team's efforts will be able to make an impact on the audience.
Q: Which genre do you prefer, action or romance?
Kusyairy: Each genre has its own uniqueness. I love both of them. I'm not the kind of actor who puts himself in a same genre forever. I understand that I have to fit myself into whatever character I receive, regardless of the genre.
Q: People have been comparing your acting with Aaron Aziz, but the latter seems to be more popular among the audience. Why is it so?
Kusyairy: I can't tell you why. In my opinion, an actor's journey depends a lot on the script that he receives and one's success comes from the way he handles a particular role. Maybe the great scripts haven't found me yet and therefore less people recognize my appearance in films.
Q: Have you ever thought of forming your own fan club?
Kusyairy: I don't have a fan club but I do have a Facebook fan page. I have Twitter account too but I seldom communicate online. It's not because I don't appreciate the love from my fans but it's hard for me to reply everyone's message. Maybe that's the reason why I'm not so popular. But to me, working in this industry is not all about chasing fame; it is a platform for me to educate the society through acting.
Q: What is your upcoming project?
Kusyairy: I'm still in talks for some projects, so I can't reveal any details yet. I have a new movie called "Bravo 5" coming out next year in conjunction with Malaysia's Armed Forces Day.

SINOPSIS FILEM BALUN
Mengisahkan tentang seorang pemuda, Hassan (Beto Kusyairy) yang membuat keputusan untuk pulang dan menetap di kampung asalnya di Kampung Putra, Kamunting kerana ada beberapa persoalan dan perkara yang harus diselesaikan, di mana salah satu perkaranya adalah perihal tanah milik arwah ayahnya, Mustafa yang dicagarkan pada Orang Kaya Seman sebelum itu.
Setibanya Hassan di pekan Kamunting, Hassan terlibat dengan dua insiden iaitu yang pertama dengan kumpulan gangster yang dikejar polis dan keduanya diekori oleh kumpulan penyamun kampung yang berjaya ditumpaskan oleh Hassan semasa mereka dalam cubaan merompak kedai serbaneka di sebuah stesen pam minyak.
Dalam adegan kejar mengejar itu, membawa Hassan ke kampung halamannya yang telah ditinggalkan hampir 17 tahun sehingga memaksa Hassan memandu masuk ke kawasan rumah Tok Penghulu dan hampir terlanggar Nur Ain (Izara Aishah) yang sedang duduk di bangku bersama Munirah.
Bertindak atas kejadian itu, sekumpulan pesilat kampung yang diketuai oleh Uwais (Saiful Zelwany) yang sedang berlatih di halaman rumah Tok Penghulu meluru menyerang Hassan, tetapi dihalang oleh Tok Penghulu (Namron). Melihat akan wajah Tok Penghulu membuatkan Hassan begitu pasti bahawa dia telah sampai ke kampungnya, namun Nur Ain masih tidak berpuashati terhadap Hassan walaupun permohonan maaf telah dibuat kerana Hassan hampir melanggarnya.
Kepulangan Hassan ke kampung tidak disenangi oleh Orang Kaya Tuan Seman yang sememangnya berniat membunuh Hassan dan ayahnya 17 tahun lalu dengan niat mengambil kesempatan menukar nama pemilik tanah yang dimiliki oleh ayah Hassan ketika menyandarkan tanahnya seluas 13 ekar untuk membuat pinjaman wang tunai dari Orang Kaya Seman. Tanah seluas 13 ekar itu diingini oleh Orang Kaya Seman kerana telah diketahui olehnya mempunyai Emas. Shaid Blond (Datuk Eizlan Yusof) yang merupakan ketua kumpulan gangster yang bertanggungjawab sepenuhnya ke atas kematian ayah Hassan.
