Saddam hanged
12/30/2006 1:30:00 PM GMT

Saddam refused to wear a hood

As day broke on one of the holiest dates of the Muslim year, and after more than two years of being held in custody by U.S. forces at Camp Cropper in Baghdad, Iraq's deposed leader Saddam Hussein was hanged at dawn Saturday at a Justice Ministry facility in northern Baghdad for crimes against humanity.

"It was very quick. He died right away," one of the Iraqi officials who witnessed the execution told Reuters news agency.

Describing the execution of the former President, who was sentenced to death on Nov. 5 after he was convicted of crimes against humanity for the killing of 148 Shia villagers in the town of Dujail, Sami al-Askari, a political ally of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, told Reuters "We heard his neck snap."

State television plans to air footage of the hanging.

The first trial of the former Iraqi leader began in October 2005 before the Iraqi Special Tribunal. Saddam and seven other defendants were tried for allegations of crimes against humanity with regard to events that took place following a failed attempt to assassinate the former leader in Dujail in 1982.

"He seemed very calm. He did not tremble," one senior witness to the execution told Reuters.

Bound and shackled with his face uncovered, Saddam recited a brief prayer as he was taken by the guards to the execution room and had the noose put around his neck.

He then recited the Muslim profession of faith "There is no God but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet" before being taken to the scaffold.
Rushed execution

Responding to reports of the impending execution of Saddam, Larry Cox, Executive Director of Amnesty International, issued a statement saying:

"Amnesty International has long documented the massive human rights abuses carried out under Saddam Hussein's rule. The organization has consistently called for Hussein to be held accountable through fair trial proceedings, and strongly contests that his execution symbolizes justice served.

"The rushed execution of Saddam Hussein is simply wrong. It signifies justice denied for countless victims who endured unspeakable suffering during his regime, and now have been denied their right to see justice served. It is a failed opportunity to establish the rule of law in Iraq, and raises concerns that egregious flaws during Hussein's trial proceedings will now set a strong precedent against a fair and independent judiciary. It will doubtless have a devastating impact on other related trials, as the key witness who could most compellingly shed light on the chain of command will have been silenced. Finally, Amnesty International opposes the death penalty, regardless of method, in all cases, and regards it as the ultimate, irreversible human rights abuse.

"Amnesty International is concerned that Hussein's execution may inflame already volatile sectarian divisions, and urges all parties to protect the human rights of civilians in Iraq."
Trial seriously flawed

Numerous Human rights experts raised concerns over Saddam抯 trial which they said has been seriously flawed and his detention which they labeled as illegal, urging the Iraqi government not to hang the toppled president.

UN human rights experts asked the Iraqi government last month not to carry out the death sentence imposed on the toppled president.

A United Nations working group on arbitrary detention said in a statement that the Iraqi tribunal lacked independence and impartiality, didn抰 give the former leader enough time to prepare his defense, restricted his access to lawyers and denied him the right to call his own witnesses.

Therefore, Saddam抯 detention is "arbitrary," said the panel, made up of five independent legal and human rights experts who report to the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN group also said that the Dujail trial didn抰 meet 搃nternational standards

Bye-bye Saddam.

Apabila ditanya nanti didalam kubur mengapa engkau membunuh beribu-ribu rakyat kau sendiri..
maka jawablah....
Bukan aku yang bunuh tapi tuan akulah Pakcik George yang menyuruh aku melakukannya
Aku cuma melihat dan merasa seronok saja melihat bangsa-bangsa Kurdish tersebut mengelupur anak beranak laki bini kena senjata kimia

dan jawablah lagi...
membunuh beramai-ramai tu pun hobi aku gak.

Hey..don't u follow the news before this? It seem that he became an instant hero to u after his death. What a pity showing ur stupidity.

Saddam not only killed 148 shia villagers but thousands of his countrymen no exception wheter they r Kurdish, Shi'ites including Sunnis who opposed his Baathist-Socialist ruled.

The Americans only highlighted his crimes of  killing 148 shia villagers...why? Please take time to think.

For your advance knowledge..read this.

For over 20 years, the greatest threat to Iraqis has been Saddam Hussein's regime -- he has killed, tortured, raped, and terrorized the Iraqi people and his neighbors for over two decades.

When Iraq is free, past crimes against humanity and war crimes committed against Iraqis, will be accounted for, in a post-conflict Iraqi-led process. The United States, members of the coalition, and the international community will work with the Iraqi people to build a strong and credible judicial process to address these abuses.

Under Saddam's regime many hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of his actions, the vast majority of them Muslims. According to a 2001 Amnesty International report, "victims of torture in Iraq are subjected to a wide range of forms of torture, including the gouging out of eyes, severe beatings, and electric shocks ... some victims have died as a result and many have been left with permanent physical and psychological damage."

Saddam has had approximately 40 of his own relatives murdered. Allegations of prostitution are used to intimidate opponents of the regime and have been used by the regime to justify the barbaric beheading of women. There have been documented chemical attacks by the regime, from 1983 to 1988, resulting in some 30,000 Iraqi and Iranian deaths.

Human Rights Watch estimates that Saddam's 1987-1988 campaign of terror against the Kurds killed at least 50,000 and possibly as many as 100,000 Kurds. The Iraqi regime used chemical agents to include mustard gas and nerve agents in attacks against at least 40 Kurdish villages between 1987-1988. The largest was the attack on Halabja which resulted in approximately 5,000 deaths. o 2,000 Kurdish villages were destroyed during the campaign of terror.

Iraq's 13 million Shi'a Muslims, the majority of Iraq's population of approximately 22 million, face severe restrictions on their religious practice, including a ban on communal Friday prayer, and restriction on funeral processions.

According to Human Rights Watch, "senior Arab diplomats told the London-based Arabic daily newspaper al-Hayat in October [1991] that Iraqi leaders were privately acknowledging that 250,000 people were killed during the uprisings, with most of the casualties in the south." Refugees International reports that

Saddam sepatutnya tak beri penghormatan gantung mati tetapi sepatutnya disembelih macam kerbau saja!

Itu lah pengajaran nya...ketika kita sehat, kuat dan berkuasa janganlah kita menindas orang..akhirnya diri sendiri yang menerima padah dan binasa.

Jahat Saddam ni orang dah nampak, dia dah kena hukum , sekarang dia ngan Allah dia nak kena settle...

Aku rasa korang smua dah nengok video clip henpon tu kan. At least kita orang Islam tengok sendiri dari kita asyik percaya sangat tulisan mass media.. Kalo korang perasan, the first reports yang keluar sebaik je pergantungan ni cakap Saddam was a broken man and show fear.

ni CNN cakap
But Haddad's description of Hussein's demeanor before his execution contrasts markedly with that of another witness, Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie. "He was a broken man," al-Rubaie said. "He was afraid. You could see fear in his face."

anyway, at least Saddam sempat ucap dua kalimah syahadat, dan mungkin sempat bertaubat..yang kita semua ntah apa ceta.

bukan persoalan dua kalimah syahadat,

Kadang2 kita kalo nak buruk2kan orang, kita hentam orang tu as if orang tu jahat sejahat  nye, lagi sedih orang Islam sesama orang Islam pun langsung takde belas sedang aku tahu Allah pun lagi pengasih lagi pengampun.

As inmate, Saddam read poetry, fed the birds: US nurse Mon Jan 1, 6:28 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former Iraqi president        Saddam Hussein was an avid reader, fed birds and told jokes while he was in US custody, an American military nurse who looked after him said in interviews with US media.

Robert Ellis, 56, an operating room nurse assigned to Saddam during his US military detention, described a courteous, contemplative figure in stark contrast to the brutal reputation Saddam earned during his rule over        Iraq.

"He basically talked about his wife, and his children," Ellis told CNN on Monday.

"He was an avid reader. Loved to read and write. He had a lot of stories that he had written. He had a pamphlet that he wrote in every day and then when time came to visit him he'd read things to me," the army reservist said.

The master sergeant said he had strict orders to ensure Saddam stayed alive while in US hands.

"That was my job: to keep him alive and healthy, so they could kill him at a later date," Ellis recounted in an interview from his home in Normandy, Missouri with the St Louis Post-Dispatch published on Sunday.

Saddam was convicted of crimes against humanity and executed by hanging on Saturday, an end that did not sit well with Ellis.

"I was kind of disappointed (by the execution)," Ellis told CNN.

"I thought that they would more or less put him in jail for the rest of his life to kind of stem some of the violence that I knew was going to take place," he said.

When Saddam at one point was allowed short walks outside, the former president would feed birds pieces of bread saved from his meals, the nurse told the St Louis newspaper. Saddam also watered a plot of weeds.

"He said he was a farmer when he was young and he never forgot where he came from," Ellis told the paper.

Ellis said he did not believe Saddam was lonely while in detention "because he was jovial at times."

Saddam "had a good sense of humor. You know, made jokes, you know. And he spent most of his time reading, and praying," he said.

Ellis said he monitored Saddam's health from January 2004 to August 2004, visiting him twice a day, giving him medicine daily, checking his blood pressure and temperature and ensuring he was receiving enough food and water.

Guards referred to Saddam by the code name "Victor," he said.

Saddam went on a hunger strike at one point, refusing to eat when guards slid food through the slot on the bottom of his cell door. But when guards starting opening the door, Saddam dropped his hunger strike.

"He refused to be fed like a lion," Ellis said.

At no time did Saddam display hostility toward him, Ellis said, but his patient did ask him why the United States had led an invasion of Iraq in 2003.

"He said everything he did was for Iraq," Ellis told the St Louis newspaper.

"One day when I went to see him, he asked why we invaded. Well, he made gestures like shooting a machine gun and asked why soldiers came and shot up the place. He said the laws in Iraq were fair and the weapons inspectors didn't find anything.

"I said, 'That's politics. We soldiers don't get caught up in that sort of thing.'"
