First Trimester
The date that marks the beginning of your pregnancy is usually based on your last menstrual period. By the end of the first trimester (first 3 months) of pregnancy you will have experienced many physical changes. For your baby, the first trimester of gestation is a time of extremely rapid growth and development.
Your month 1
* The first changes are usually noticed during week 4 of your pregnancy.
* A metallic taste in your mouth might be your first梐nd only梤eal sign of the physical changes that are occurring.
Baby's month 1
By week 2 of gestation, the basic structures of the central nervous system have already begun to develop.
Your month 2
* By week 5, although you will have missed a menstrual period or have had 1 or 2 very light periods, you may feel as if you are just about to get your period. You may experience many of the feelings you normally get before your period梑loating, stuffiness, and headaches.
* Your breasts will begin to enlarge and to become tender.
* You will need to urinate more often than usual.
* In week 6, your vagina and outer labia will react to the increased blood flow by turning a bluish color.
* The nausea and vomiting of pregnancy often start now.
* By week 7, you may feel a bit dizzy sometimes and even short of breath.
* Small lumps may appear on your breasts, and the area around your nipples will become darker.
* By week 8, your hair may start to be less manageable.
* Vaginal discharges梒lear, white, odorless梞ay start now.
Baby's month 2
By week 5, the embryo can be seen easily with the naked eye. By week 6, the heart is beating, and the head, chest, and abdomen are beginning to form. By week 7, indentations mark the sites where fingers and toes will form. By week 8, all of the internal organs are in place, and major joints such as shoulders and hips are quite obvious梔espite the fact that the fetus is now only approximately 2.5 cm (1 in) in length.
Your month 3
* In week 9, you may notice changes in your skin. Also around this time your gums may begin to soften and need more care. For details, see Other Physical Changes.
* Your thyroid gland (at the side of the front of your neck) may become larger.
* By week 10, your uterus will have become the size of a grapefruit.
* Your breasts will have outgrown your usual bra size.
* By week 11, the nausea and vomiting of morning sickness may begin to disappear.
* Your blood volume will have increased a great deal, and you may have nosebleeds.
* By week 12, the end of the first trimester, your uterus will have risen above the pelvis and can be felt externally.
Baby's month 3
By week 9, a tiny mouth and nose are visible, and the limbs are growing rapidly. Week 10 is marked by clearly distinguishable fingers and toes, which are joined by webs of skin. By the end of week 11, every internal organ is formed and functional. By week 12梩he end of the first trimester梕yelids are obvious, tiny fingernails and toenails are present, joints contract, and your developing baby can suck and swallow.
By the end of the first trimester, all of the systems of the body are well developed, and many organs are nearly complete. The fetus is not yet capable of living outside the womb, but it has certainly come a long way in 12 weeks.

Second Trimester
The second trimester (months 4, 5, and 6) of your pregnancy is the time when you will feel the first fetal movements and start to look undeniably pregnant. The fetus is also starting to look obviously human梬ith eyelashes, hair, and a tendency to suck its thumb.
Your month 4
* Your morning sickness will not be as much of a problem and may go away completely by the end of the second trimester.
* You will need new clothing to fit your growing waist.
* You may notice increased salivation梥ometimes related to nausea梐nd increased sweating.
* You may now start to feel fetal movement.
Baby's month 4
By the first week of this trimester梉color=Red]week 13 of gestation梩he fetus is fully formed, so for the rest of your pregnancy it will grow in size and its organs will fully mature.
By week 14, there is a pronounced weight increase, with the average fetus reaching about 64 g (2 1/4 oz). Only 1 week ago the weight would have been just 28 g (about 1 oz). Ultrasound devices can detect a heartbeat at this point, and the fetus can curl its tiny fingers into fists. At 16 weeks, fetal movements are vigorous, and the muscles are becoming stronger. Fine hair, called lanugo, covers the entire body, and the beginnings of eyebrows can be seen.
Your month 5
- If you haven't had heartburn yet, you may get it during this month.
- Skin and hair changes become more obvious now. You may also develop a darkened area on your face, in the form of a butterfly pattern, called chloasma. Moles may now darken and become larger. Usually this is not a problem, but your health care professional should see any mole that changes in size or color to rule out skin cancer.
Baby's month 5
The fetus is now growing at a very rapid pace. By week 20, it is approximately 25 cm (10 in) long. Teeth are forming in the jaw, and growing musculature is resulting in even more vigorous activity. You will now start to feel these movements as tiny flutters against your abdomen.
Your month 6
- By now you may have noticed many changes in your veins. You may have, or be getting, spidery purple lines up and down your thighs or around your chest. You may have varicose veins or hemorrhoids.
- By this point in the trimester you will have achieved almost half of your total pregnancy weight gain. Your waist and your hips will have thickened.
- Increased urinary frequency, and sometimes infection, occurs as your uterus gets larger and puts more pressure on your bladder.
- Vaginal discharges become heavier now, and yeast infections are more common. Talk to your health care professional about the best way to treat them.
Baby's month 6
At 24 weeks, the fetus has grown to about 33 cm (13 in) and can cough and hiccup. The fat stores it will need to survive outside the womb haven't appeared yet, so the fetus may seem rather thin. (These fat stores will start to appear about a month later, at week 28.) In this final week of the second trimester, the lungs have matured to the point where the fetus could breathe on its own outside the womb.

Third Trimester
Your months 7, 8, and 9
In these last 3 months, some health issues will diminish while others will intensify. A few new issues will appear, but most of them have to do with your increasing size.
* Your uterus will become very large and hard.
* You will feel contractions of the uterus, and will feel an occasional tightening there.
* The need to urinate will become more frequent and urgent, and you might find there is some leakage. Your muscles are relaxing and smoothing out to get your body ready to "stretch" for the delivery. The relaxed muscles make you want to urinate often梕very 5 minutes or so toward the end of the trimester.
* You may become increasingly short of breath because your lungs are working to supply both you and the fetus.
* As your weight and size increase, you may become more awkward and uncoordinated.
* Backaches and leg pains may become more frequent because of your changes in size and shape.
* You may not be able to find a comfortable position in bed, and sleep will become more difficult. Anxiety about becoming a mother may also keep you awake. Lack of sleep may lead to fatigue.
* By the last month, you will feel a lightening. Your uterus has been growing upward toward your lungs to make room for the fetus. But around the week 36, the uterus grows even more to get ready for labor and delivery. There is more room for the fetus, and the head drops a little, making it easier for you to breathe.
At around week 40, your body will be ready for the delivery of your baby.
Baby's months 7, 8, and 9
As the third trimester begins, the fetus is considered capable of sustaining independent life outside the womb. A baby born at this point may have some difficulty breathing and staying warm, but has a very good chance of survival with the aid of modern medical facilities. This is the trimester of rapid growth and weight gain, when the fetus changes from wrinkled and slender to smooth and rounded.
By week 32, your developing baby's proportions are pretty much what you'd expect in a newborn. He or she will probably be positioned with head down toward your pelvis at this point and will weigh about 1.6 kg (3 1/2 lb).
At week 36, the fetus fills the uterus and is settling into the birth position. The irises (colored portion of the eyes) are blue, and soft nails have grown to the ends of the fingers and toes. Fetal weight has now reached about 2.5 kg (5 1/2 lb).
Finally, at around week 40, your baby is ready to be born. When baby is awake, the eyes are open and can discern light. Fingernails and toenails are so long that they will need to be cut shortly after birth. The average fetus now weighs about 3.4 kg (7 1/2 lb).
