Archers Open Malaysia's Charge
By Tham Choy Lin
BEIJING, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia move into the medal hunt the day after the Olympic Games opens with world-ranked archers Cheng Chu Sian, Wan Mohd Khalmizam Aziz and Marbawi Sulaiman taking to the field for the ranking contest Saturday.
The ranking results are crucial to decide the draw for the team assault on Monday where the gold is at stake.
The national trio are making their Olympics with a bang as they are currently ranked number four in the world and are rated among the teams to be watched here.
"There is a lot of pressure even for defending champions South Korea," said Malaysia's national coach Lee Jae Hyun.
Before they take to the field in the afternoon, they will have a special visitor, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, who is in Beijing to watch the opening of the Games and give his support to the 33-athlete contingent.
Swimmer Lew Yih Wey will take the plunge in the Water Cube, the national aquatics centre, at night in her only event, the 400m individual medley.
The 17-year-old Negeri Sembilan schoolgirl, who is in the first of five heats, has a best and national record of 4:50.52s.
Saturday remains a training day for the badminton squad, who are spearheading the medal prospects for Malaysia, who are aiming to return with at least one after a drought since 1996.
Lee Chong Wei, the men's singles second-seed behind China's Lin Dan, will take to the courts only on Monday, a day after women's singles Wong Mew Choo and women's pair, Chin Ee Hui and Wong Pei Tty go into action.
Malaysia are taking part in nine sports - archery, aquatics, badminton, cycling, taekwondo, sailing, shooting, track and field, and weightlifting.
