Ritual menoreh kulit kaum Sepik, Papua New Guinea (18PL)

The idea of ritual scarification sends chills down the spine of many people, but for others it represents a closeness to God, an expression of their identity or a connection to their ancestors, and even pleasure. Ritual scarification has been used by many cultures as a means to symbolize the passage from child to adult.

Tribes in the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, for instance, use ritual scarification as an initiation rite for the young men in their tribes. Believing that crocodiles are the creators of humans, the resulting rituals surround this notion. The young man will have his chest, back, and rear end sliced open with sharp pieces of bamboo. The scars that form are representational of teeth marks left by the crocodile as it "swallowed" the young man during the course of the ceremony. This practice is meant to test the strength as well as the person's self-discipline.

1) Kaum2 lelaki yang bakal menjalani proses 'tarah kulit' ni akan diasingkan dari umum selama 2 bulan utk menjalani proses penyucian.

2) Haus Tambaran, tempat suci yang dihuni oleh lelaki kaum sepik sebelum proses menarah kulit bermula. Wanita sama sekali dilarang memasuki tempat ini.

PADA HARI UPACARA..

3) Kaum2 lelaki ini akan dibawa berendam di Sungai Blackwater pada seawal jam 5 pagi. Mereka akan dibiarkan berendam selama 1 jam agar kulit mereka lembut sebelum dibawa semula ke Haus Tambaran untuk proses penarahan bermula. Di Haus Tambaran inilah, mereka akan mula menarah bahagian dada terlebih dahulu.

4) Setelah selesai menarah dibahagian dada, mereka akan dibawa keluar ke perkarangan Haus Tambaran untuk proses menarah bahagian belakang badan..

5) Selepas selesai menarah, luka2 ini akan disapu dgn minyak dari pohon kaumever. Sejurus kemudian, lumpur sungai akan ditepek pada badan mereka dan mereka akan disuruh berehat di Haus Tambaran ini.
