Malah, Timbalan Presiden Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) Datuk Ir.

Top doubles pairs placed under different coaches
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: A reshuffle involving the national elite doubles pairs has taken place, with Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif now being placed directly under coach Rosman Razak.
Head coach Rexy Mainaky, who previously handled the beleaguered pair, has also put joint coaching responsibility on Pang Cheh Chang to handle the top pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong as they head towards the World Championships, which will be held in Paris in August.
With the changes in place, the India Open in Chennai from June 8-13 will be the stage for Fairuzizuan-Zakry to make amends for their insipid performance in the group stages of the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur recently.
The pair have been entered for the India Open, which will be the first Grand Prix tournament after the Thomas Cup Finals, along with Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry have also been given the nod for the Singapore Open, taking place the week after the India Open, along with Kien Keat-Boon Heong.
There has been no word yet from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) but the latest move indicates that Fairuzizuan may have escaped disciplinary action for losing his cool and retaliating against a fan who used foul language on him.
The incident occurred after Fairuzizuan-Zakry lost the second doubles match to Japanese pair Kenichi Hayakawa-Kenta Kazuno.
Malaysia eventually fell to a shock 2-3 defeat by Japan in their last group tie.
Rosman said he did not want to look back on what had happened.
“I’m more concerned with how I am going to help get them back on track again. It was decided on Tuesday that Fairuzizuan-Zakry will be under me while Rexy and Cheh Chang will be responsible for Kien Keat-Boon Heong,” said Rosman.
“What happened to Fairuzizuan-Zakry was in the past and I was not directly in charge ... so it’s not fair for me to pass judgment.
“They will go for the India Open next month and I hope they will take this opportunity to show to us they can still be depended on.
“It will also be good if they can get back their confidence.”
Fairuzizuan-Zakry are the top seeds ahead of India’s top pair of Rupesh Kumar-Thomas Sanave. Thien How-Soon Hock are seeded third.
Wong Mew Choo is the sole representative for the women’s singles and has been seeded second behind top Indian hope Saina Nehwal.
Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Tan Chun Seang will carry the Malaysian hopes in the men’s singles. Hafiz is seeded second behind India’s Chetan Anand.

BAM boss aware of memo
PETALING JAYA: The memorandum from a coalition of NGOs (non-govermental organisations) calling for changes to the top management in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has been brought to the attention of the association’s president, Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Salleh.
BAM general manager Kenny Goh, who confirmed this yesterday, refrained from commenting further.
However, he did not discount the possibility that the matter may be brought up at the next BAM council meeting.
A group of 50 people from a coalition of NGOs turned up at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara on Tuesday, demanding that the BAM’s top management – including Nadzmi – resign and stop blaming others for the association’s failures.
The memorandum also called on BAM to put their house in order and to sort out the internal problems which led to the sacking of secretary P. Ganga Rao.
The protesters also urged BAM to unearth new talent and focus on making Malaysia a world-class badminton nation again in the wake of their Thomas Cup semi-final defeat by China recently. |
