Maria Sharapova beats Ana Ivanovic to make the China Open final

BEIJING, China -- No. 4 Maria Sharapova held off a second-set charge from Ana Ivanovic to win 6-0, 6-4 and advance to the China Open final where she'll play No. 3 Petra Kvitova. The winner of Sunday's final will take over the No. 2 ranking ahead of Simona Halep.

Sharapova reeled off the first seven games of the match before Ivanovic was able to make it a match. With a strip of hot pink kinesio tape on the back of her left hamstring, Ivanovic wasn't the dynamic mover she was in the last match these two played at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati over the summer, which she won in three sets. She got a walkover from Halep in the quarterfinals but still felt flat before the match and blamed it on the residual effect of an emotional few weeks following her Tokyo Open title and the news of her qualification for the WTA Finals this week for the first time since 2008.

"When I made [the WTA Finals] for first time in Madrid, Doha, I took it a little bit for granted," Ivanovic said. "You understand the season is long, you played lots of matches, you fight for it.  To achieve something that's been my dream for a while, it's amazing."

But this match wasn't about Ivanovic being off her game. Sharapova imposed herself on the match behind aggressive hitting and big serving. The Russian served nine aces in the match, an incredibly high yield for her in a two set match, though she also served eight double faults. She finished with 21 winners to 17 unforced errors, while Ivanovic managed 11 winners to 18 unforced errors. Ivanovic struggled to handle her pace and angles off the ground. "She definitely played bigger today, I felt," Ivanovic said. "Even when I played some good tennis, she came up with amazing shots. She was really staying closer to the baseline and she was very aggressive today."

"She was the more aggressive player last time which didn't help me very much," Sharapova said. "I was always on defense. Today I felt that I really was the one kind of going for it, making her move."
Ivanovic had chances to level the third set. With Sharapova serving for the match at 5-4, Ivanovic earned four break points but couldn't convert. It looked as though she did get the break on her fourth break point of the nine-minute game but Hawkeye showed Sharapova's backhand landed just in:

5-5, breakback, deuce? No - overturned! 5-4 deuce!

"I was happy with the challenge," Sharapova said. "Those are the ones where you're like, Okay, I like the challenge system." Two points later, Sharapova sealed the victory to move to 9-4 against Ivanovic. Theirs has been one of the best rivalries on tour this season, having now split their four meetings.

"It's been few years now that we are rivals," Ivanovic said. "In 2007 and '08 it was a little bit more, then it subsided a little bit. Now it's getting to that point again. It's exciting. I think in women's tennis, we need this kind of rivalry."

Sharapova beats Kvitova in Beijing final, reclaims No. 2 ranking

BEIJING (AP) -- Maria Sharapova outlasted Petra Kvitova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a hard-hitting, back-and-forth duel to win the China Open on Sunday and return to No. 2 in the rankings.

The fourth-seeded Sharapova overcame 10 double-faults and a number of untimely errors to defeat Kvitova in a rematch of the 2011 Wimbledon final, won by the Czech left-hander.

Sharapova broke Kvitova to go up 3-0 and then 4-2 in the third set, but made consecutive errors in the next game to give Kvitova break point to get back on serve. The Russian saved it with a hard, deep shot to the corner that Kvitova dumped in the net, then tracked down a short ball that clipped the tape and hit a sharply angled backhand winner to make it 5-2.

''It's not easy playing against Petra. You don't always quite get a good rhythm. She goes for a lot of shots, you know, very deep,'' Sharapova said. ''I was kind of happy that I was able to lift my game again in the third and come out with a win.''

After missing the end of last season with an injured shoulder, Sharapova is now wrapping up one of her most successful years on tour. She captured her fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open in June, and with her win in Beijing she now has four titles in the year - her most in a single season since 2006.

With the win, she'll also jump past Simona Halep and Kvitova from fourth to second in the rankings, within striking distance of top-ranked Serena Williams.

At this time last year, Sharapova was looking into different treatment options for her shoulder, not sure when she'd return to the court.

''It was mentally a tough time because I was just in the middle of Europe trying to find a solution, yet everyone was still playing,'' she said. ''It's definitely great to be a year later in a situation where this is my fourth title of the year, you know, a Grand Slam this year. A lot to put in perspective. You look back and think about how you kind of struggled, but you kept going.''

Kvitova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, fell short of earning her second title in as many weeks following her victory last weekend at the Wuhan Open.

Playing her ninth match in 13 days, she seemed to struggle with her energy levels as the match wore on and was more mistake-prone than usual, making 44 unforced errors. Her serve is usually a weapon, but she only had one ace to seven double-faults.

''The small difference is just who really going little bit forward more than the other. We both tried to play very aggressively, very fast. I did little bit more mistakes, I think,'' Kvitova said.

SHARAPOVA'S FIRST WTA TITLE IN CHINA
Maria Sharapova has finally added China to the collection of countries she's won WTA titles in. How many is she at now? Which very important one is she missing?

BEIJING, China - A week ago, she had never won a trophy in seven career attempts at WTA events in China - five tries in Beijing, one in Shanghai, one in Wuhan. But it was eighth time lucky for Maria Sharapova this past week, as she finally won a WTA title in China in her sixth attempt in Beijing.

And Sharapova is very popular in China, too - she has 2.8 million fans on Sina Weibo, the second-most followers on that platform for a WTA player after, of course, Asia's first Grand Slam winner, Li Na.
The victory was even sweeter given she couldn't even compete at the tournament last year.
"It's so rewarding, honestly," Sharapova said on Sunday. "At this time last year I was somewhere in Europe getting treatment for my shoulder, just trying to find different medical perspectives and advice on how to treat it and get it better. I knew I wasn't going to play for the rest of the year. I missed the US Open already, and I was going to miss the WTA Finals. It was a tough time for me, mentally - I was just in the middle of Europe trying to find a solution, yet everyone else was still playing.
"It's definitely great to be in a situation a year later where this is my fourth WTA title of the year, and a Grand Slam this year. You look back and think about how you struggled but kept going.
"It's a lot to put in perspective."
Another thing to put in perspective: China is the 14th country Sharapova has won a WTA title in...
Australia (1): 2008 Australian Open
Austria (1): 2006 Linz
Canada (1): 2003 Québec City
China (1): 2014 Beijing
England (3): 2004 Birmingham, 2004
Wimbledon, 2005 Birmingham
France (3): 2010 Strasbourg, 2012
French Open, 2014 French Open
Germany (3): 2012 Stuttgart, 2013 Stuttgart, 2014 Stuttgart
Italy (2): 2011 Rome, 2012 Rome
Japan (4): 2003 Tokyo [Japan Open], 2004 Tokyo [Japan Open], 2005 Tokyo [Pan Pacific], 2009 Tokyo [Pan Pacific]
Qatar (2): 2005 Doha, 2008 Doha
South Korea (1): 2004 Seoul
Spain (1): 2014 Madrid
Switzerland (1): 2006 Zürich
USA (9): 2004 WTA Finals, 2006 Indian Wells, 2006 San Diego, 2006
US Open, 2007 San Diego, 2008 Amelia Island, 2010 Memphis, 2011 Cincinnati, 2013 Indian Wells
** One very notable country missing from the list? Sharapova's home country of Russia. She's played the Kremlin Cup three times before - 2005, 2006 and 2007 - but never made it past the quarters.

SHARAPOVA SECURES SECOND SINGAPORE SPOT

Maria Sharapova has clinched second place on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, thus she will avoid a Singapore showdown with Serena Williams until at least the semifinals.

The singles field is set at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, so now the storyline turns to draw placement.

The Top 2 players on the Road To Singapore leaderboard will be in separate round robin sections. And the Top 2 in each group after round robin play will advance to the semifinals, with first place in Group 1 playing second place in Group 2 and vice versa. Then the winners will face off in the final.

Maria Sharapova clinched the No.2 spot with her triumph in Beijing, therefore she will be in a separate group than World No.1 Serena Williams, whom she has lost 15 straight matches to. Interestingly enough, though, Sharapova's last victory over Williams came in the championships match of the WTA Finals in 2004.

The other six spots in Singapore will be filled by Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Eugenie Bouchard, Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic.

Still in the running for the last two spots in the doubles draw are Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro, Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova, and Martina Hingis and Flavia Pennetta. The latter two teams are in the draw this week in Tianjin.

Already qualified are Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, Cara Black and Sania Mirza, Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, and Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik.
