Boon Heong wants another two more years with Kien Keat
PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong is secretly hoping that his partnership with Koo Kien Keat will not be broken up as he believes they still have much to offer as a pair.
Boon Heong-Kien Keat came under heavy criticism following their failure to meet the Badmin-ton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) target of winning a medal at the recent London Olympics.
The world No. 8 pair have simply lost their dominance of old and have not won a Super Series title since bagging the Malaysian Open two years ago.
They got off to a fantastic start in London, blowing opponents away to reach the semi-finals and for a while, it seemed like they finally regained their form.
But Boon Heong-Kien Keat had floundered when it mattered most and were easily packed off by eventual champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng in the semi-finals.
In the bronze medal playoff, they threw away a 19-13 lead in the first game to lose 21-23.
Then they went down tamely 10-21 in the second to South Korea’s Chung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae.
BAM president Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh has said that the pair have no future together and would be split up although a decision will only be made after a coaching and training committee meeting.
However, the 24-year-old Boon Heong, is hoping that the break-up will not materialise as he feels they can still deliver the goods.
“Personally, I don’t want to split up with Kien Keat just yet because we have unfinished business and it is of no benefit to anyone if we part ways,” said Boon Heong.
“I would prefer to continue my partnership with Kien Keat for at least another two more years – until the 2014 World Champion-ships and Asian Games.
“In fact, it’s a waste for us to go separate ways considering the years we’ve been together. But I understand that it’s not our call so we have to let the coaches decide,” added Boon Heong.
