FANS of Japanese movies would be able to enjoy a great selection of films at the 8th Japanese Film Festival, which ends this Sunday.
The festival was launched at GSC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur last Wednesday with director Hiroshi Kurosaki and actors of Second Chance Hiroki Hasegawa and Kyoka Suzuki, gracing the event.
Malaysians can watch Second Chance before its premiere in Japan on Sept 22. Other movies being screened at the festival are the anime Mai Mai Miracle (2009), the comedy Happy Flight (2008) and the tense courtroom thriller I Just Didn’t Do It (2007).
“Since its establishment in 1989, the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur has been conducting mutual cultural exchange between Malaysia and Japan. We’re extremely privileged and happy that we have been able to continue this festival, thanks to the support of the many fans of Japanese films here,” said director of Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur Toyoda Shoichi.
“ I hope that the films screened at this festival could become the impetus for more Malaysians to get to know Japan and its people, ” he added.
The movie Second Chance is a film version of the 10-episode drama Second Virgin that was broadcast in Japan last October. It centres around high-flying career woman Rui Nakamura (Suzuki), who finds herself in love with the head of an Internet securities company Koh Suzuki (Hasegawa), who is 17 years her junior. The problem is that he is married. But the two manage to overcome various obstacles to begin living together, but then one day, Koh disappears from Rui’s life.
Five years later, the couple meets once again in Malaysia. Their encounter stirs up a lot of old feelings.
The movie explores “ walls around the hearts ” of the protagonists that couldn’t be explored in the TV drama and promises to be both shocking and heart-breaking.
Second Chance was filmed in Japan and Malaysia (Ipoh in Perak and Sekinchan in Selangor).
Before he began writing the script, Kurosaki scouted a variety of Asian countries for a possible location site.
“ What I wanted to do was to try and select a totally different world that’s so far apart from that of Japan where I could position the two main characters alone in order to tell the story. When I came to Malaysia it seemed the most suitable, ” said Kurosaki, who also directed the TV drama and won the Japan’s Minister of Education’s Art Encouragement Prize for Best Newcomer in 2009.
The TV drama took a long time to explore the personalities of the protagonists, said Kurosaki.
“ When it comes to the film version, the story is totally new though we kept the characters’ personalities. The work can be enjoyed as a totally new piece, ” he said.
He added that although Second Chance is a Japanese movie, he believes that it’s a movie that can be enjoyed by Malaysian audiences, too. After all, it also stars Malaysian actress Nurul Elfira Loy, whose character is an important link between Rui and Koh.
Nurul said that it was a challenge to communicate with the cast. “ But it was fun working with them because they were such nice people, ” she said.
The director smiled and added that Suzuki taught Nurul a few Japanese words between shoots. “ Nurul would just pop up to me and utter these words and totally shock me! For example, when we are taking a long time with the lighting setting, she suddenly come up and said so in Japanese. I think it’s a little trick played by Miss Kyoka, ” he said, laughing.
“ We’re very blessed to have wonderful Malaysian staff and the opportunity to meet great people during the local shoot, ” said Suzuki.
She hopes that the movie will make people interested in Malaysia and for Malaysian audiences to take a greater interest in Japan as well.
Said Hasegawa : “ This is my first opportunity to be in a feature film. I’m truly honoured to come to Malaysia and attend this film festival. This is truly a passionate love story, ” he added.
