Public invited to witness no holds barred simulation ties
By LIM TEIK HUAT
KUALA LUMPUR: The squads for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will be involved in simulation ties at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara tonight (6pm).
And national singles coach Misbun Sidek is hoping that the public will turn up to show their support for the players.
Malaysia are hosting the Finals of the world men’s and women’s team championships at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
Tough task: Reserve Tan Chun Seang will take on Lee Chong Wei in the simulation match today.
“We are staging the simulation ties in the evening to follow the schedule for the Finals and it is also to get the public to come and see our players action,” said Misbun.
“We have assembled the best players we have for the event. I hope the Malaysian fans will turn up to fill the stadium to help us create the environment to get the players into the mood before the Finals.
“I am sure the shuttlers will hold nothing back as we are also giving cash incentives to the winning team.
“The simulation ties will involve all the selected shuttlers for the Finals and some of the back-up players. We will use the same format of three singles and two doubles.” Malaysia will only be allowed to use the actual competition venue from May 5 as the Badminton Association of Malaysia were unable to secure bookings for the teams to train there earlier.
For the Thomas Cup simulation tie, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei will be going up against reserve singles player Tan Chun Seang in the first match.
The other singles matches involve Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Hafiz Hashim against back-up players Chan Kwong Beng and Liew Daren.
The top doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong will take on Ong Soon Hock- Hoon Thien How while Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif will play against Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong.
The match-ups for the Uber Cup ties will be decided today.

Injuries to Lydia, Julia put semis target in jeopardy
KUALA LUMPUR: Injuries to singles players Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong threaten to wreck Malaysia’s hopes of making a breakthrough in the Uber Cup Finals.
The duo are expected to play key roles as the second and third singles players in Malaysia’s quest to beat the odds to reach the semi-finals for the first time but they are nursing knee injuries.
Lydia sustained the injury during training while Julia has a recurrent injury and her knee is swollen.
Lydia: Picked up a knee injury during training.
Julia had been kept out of competitive badminton after undergoing surgery on the injury suffered at the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Guangzhou last May. She only made a return to competition in the Malaysian Open in January.
Lydia and Julia have been told to skip training for the rest of the week and they will not be involved in a simulation tie for the Uber Cup team at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara tonight.
The National Sports Institute (NSI) director-general, Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, said that both players had been seeking treatment since last weekend.
“We hope they can resume light training next week. All athletes must be 100% fit two weeks before the tournament but from my estimation, they are obviously not,” he said.
“But I’m not at liberty to discuss more until I have presented my recommendations to the coaches tomorrow.”
If the coaches are forced to leave Lydia and Julia out of the team, the players likely to replace them are juniors Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah.
Sonia is the younger sister of Lydia and she reached the quarter-finals at the World Juniors in Guadalajara last week.
Although the deadline for the final entries expired last Friday, the Badminton World Federation events manager, S. Venugopal, said that team could still make changes for valid medical reasons.
“But the replacement has to be lower ranked than the one she comes in for and it has to be approved by the tournament referee,” he said.
Julia and Lydia were named as the singles players in the team together with national No. 1 Wong Mew Choo and Tee Jing Yi. The doubles pairs in the side are Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo, Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.
Malaysia are in Group A with six-time champions China and the United States. The top two teams of the four-group preliminaries advance to the quarter-finals.
A fresh draw is conducted for the knockout stage and Malaysia will be keeping their fingers crossed that they avoid the top guns if they are to reach the last four.

Uber Cup squad seek replacements for injured Lydia and Julia
KUALALUMPUR: The ball is at the feet of the Badminton World Federation (BWF)tournament referee to give the green light to Malaysia to make changesto their Uber Cup team.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia(BAM) made a request yesterday to replace Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong, who are nursing knee injuries, after receiving medical reportssubmitted by the National Sports Institute (NSI) director-general,Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz.
Lydia sustained the injury during training while Julia suffered a recurrent of an injury last weekend.
Juliamade a return to competitive badminton in the Malaysian Open in Januaryafter a long layoff following surgery on the injury suffered at theSudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Guangzhou last May.
Lydia and Julia were not involved in the simulation tie for the Uber Cup team last night.
Singleschief coach Rashid Sidek said that they had submitted the request toreplace the duo with Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah.
“If theBWF do not allow us to make he changes, our choices for the singlesline-up will be restricted. We may have to field doubles players forsingles matches. I would prefer to have fit players for thechallenges,” he said.
Lydia and Julia are ranked 53rd and 99threspectively. Tournament rules allow changes for valid medical reasonsand the replacements have to be lower ranked players. Sannatasah andSonia, who is the younger sister of Lydia, are ranked 99th and 280threspectively.
The other singles players in the squad are Wong Mew Choo and Tee Jing Yi, who are ranked 22nd and 168th respectively.
Without the services of a fit Lydia and Julia, Malaysia are a weakened side.
“Wehave no choice but that is the prospect we have to face. We have tohope for two points from the doubles and one point from the singlesinstead to go far in the tournament,” said Rashid.
Malaysia arein Group A with six-time champions China and the United States. The toptwo teams of the four-group preliminaries advance to the quarter-finals.
Thedoubles pairs in the side are Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Ng Hui Lin-GohLiu Ying and Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) runners-up Woon KheWei-Vivian Hoo. |

Rexy not worried over defeat suffered by Fairuzizuan-Zakry
By LIM TEIK HUAT
KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif have raised questions on their ability to carry the challenge as the second doubles pair in the Malaysian team for the Thomas Cup Finals.
They were beaten by the back-up squad’s Tan Wee Kiong-Mak Hee Chun in a simulation exercise at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara here yesterday. But chief doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said that there was nothing to worry about over in their 21-18, 15-21, 17-21 defeat.
For Rexy, it was more important to read into their confidence and level of performance.
“They are playing their normal game and it was a good fight against their younger opponents when they increased their pace,” he said.
“If Fairuz-Zakry were up against Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun (now the Chinese second ranked pair), I think they would have won the match for Malaysia.
“Hee Chun-Wee Kiong played without any pressure and they proved they are worthy candidates to be considered for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games if they continue with this form.
“What’s more important is how we keep to build up their confidence heading into the start of the Thomas Cup competition on May 9 when we play against Nigeria. It was important for Fairuz-Zakry to play against Hee Chun-Wee Kiong as they will probably face younger pairs in the Finals.”
Otherwise, it was smooth-sailing for the Thomas Cup squad as the cruised through their respective matches.
About 200 fans turned up to watch the simulation tie. They played their part in cheering the shuttlers and Rexy was pleased with the way it turned out.
“We had a simulation tie too at Gym Two in Bukit Jalil for the last Thomas Cup two years ago and the atmosphere was quiet with only the coaches and media people showing up. I’m happy that there were people watching them play this time,” he said.
The team will switch their training base to the tournament venue at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 5.
