'My answer today, honestly, is that I'm going to do it after the World Tour Finals. You never know, depends on how things improve.” (AP Photo)
Rafael Nadal plans to have surgery for appendicitis following the ATP World Tour Finals in London, but will play on until then as scheduled.
The Spaniard was diagnosed with the condition before the Shanghai Masters, but chose to take antibiotics to control the inflammation rather than having immediate surgery. Though physically sound, the medication left him light-headed and he was been unable to train properly before the tournament. He lost to Feliciano Lopez in his opening match in straight sets. It was his second tournament in a comeback from a wrist injury that sidelined him for three months.
Nadal admitted that surgery would be required to ensure the condition did not reoccur, and said he did not want to develop problems during a tournament.
''I talked to my doctor in Spain, and there is a lot of risk when it has already happened to you once," Nadal said. ''My answer today, honestly, is that I'm going to do it after the World Tour Finals. You never know, depends on how things improve.”
"If it is now under control, it is obvious that [it] will come back, and I do not want to come back and be the same again when you arrive in Australia, in Indian Wells, or Miami, or Roland Garros, and I'm going to do before the end of the year," he said.
UPDATE:
Statement: Nadal is back in Spain. Already visited doctor and surgeon. Will continue antibiotic treatment for 4-5 days and then reassess.

Operate jer la, Rafa... just skip the WTF and others for the rest of 2014. Focus on getting well and chase the AO2015. Make it double career slam, even Fedex doesn't have that.
Masa badan sihat pun takleh menang WTF. |

WTA PLAYER OF THE MONTH (SEPT): SHARAPOVA
Maria Sharapova may have started the month of October by being upset by qualifier Timea Bacsinszky at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open, but that only motivated the former World No.1 to have an even better China Open campaign, and that's exactly what she did.
Sharapova stormed though the field not dropping a set en route to the final. There she battled past Petra Kvitova in a close three-setter. It was Sharapova's first Beijing title and fourth WTA title of 2014, the most WTA titles she has won in a season since 2006.
Additionally it was Sharapova's second Premier Mandatory title of the year after winning Madrid in May.
Following Beijing Sharapova returned to World No.2 and now has a chance to overtake the World No.1 ranking from Serena Williams during the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
What were her thoughts on the title and looking back after missing the entire second half of last year's season?
"It's so rewarding, honestly," Sharapova said. "At this time last year I was somewhere in Europe getting treatment for my shoulder, just trying to find different medical perspectives and advice on how to treat it and get it better. I knew I wasn't going to play for the rest of the year. I missed the US Open already, and I was going to miss the WTA Finals. It was a tough time for me, mentally - I was just in the middle of Europe trying to find a solution, yet everyone else was still playing.
"It's definitely great to be in a situation a year later where this is my fourth WTA title of the year, and a Grand Slam this year. You look back and think about how you struggled but kept going. It's a lot to put in perspective."
Final Results for September's WTA Player of the Month presented by Wilson
1. Maria Sharapova (52%)
2. Petra Kvitova (28%)
3. Ana Ivanovic (20%) |

Fans Get Engaged During Federer-Djokovic Changeover in Shanghai
Most tennis fans agree: When Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic get together for another edition of their storied rivalry it’s hard not to feel the love. Shanghai: Federer Takes Down Djokovic to Set Simon Clash But these two tennis fans took “the love” to a whole different level during Federer’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Djokovic at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

During a changeover in the second set a very opportunistic man whipped out the engagement ring as soon as the arena’s roving camera spied him. The camera stayed with him as he got down on his knees and his blushing bride to be smiled in disbelief. Then she draped her arms around him and momentarily forgot about the fact that Federer was about to reach his 39th career Masters 1000 final. What we’d like to know is: Was the cameraman in on this, or did the young man just hope that serendipity would intervene and bring his plan to propose on live television to fruition? Either way it was a job well done, and the couple’s genuine enthusiasm and emotion made for a memorable moment.
No kiss cam? No problem. Fan proposes during changeover, and she says YES. Touching moment.
